Berated in a disabled parking space by socilaist misfits!

I see many people get out of their car and walk to the shops, no visible disability, they have a blue badge.... they may have a disability that means they cannot walk far. For most like this would another 20-50yrds make any difference? After all they probably walk more then half a mile around the shops....

My point is although the spaces are close to the shopping, the bays are wider for getting wheelchairs out and many a time I’ve been waiting only to see someone carrying shopping bags in each hand Chuck in boot jump in car badge in glove box and off...

Parents with kids don’t have to have a badge and some need extra space to get prams out...

When I go out shopping if there is no bays available then I either have to wait or go home because if I park in a normal bay then all too often someone parks next to me in a normal fashion then I can’t get in my car... and that’s decking annoying when it’s raining....

Once I parked in a car park at 9.15am no spare blue bays but I was only going to be 5mins so parked on bay with a space next to it and parked over a bit to discourage someone parking there... when I came back there was a car there. 5.30pm the chap came back from work and moved his car.

Whilst sitting there all day I saw a stream of people parking in the blue bays and happily walking around the shops carrying their shopping.

I’m sorry if you think this is having a go at the people with invisible disabilities or the “walking wounded” but if they can’t find a blue badge bay they have the option to park in a normal bay and are still able to get out of the car. I don’t have that option.

The whole bloody system needs a big overhaul and updating with this blue badge scheme, for instance all should have to pay to park if it’s a payed car park..

The present system is open to too much abuse....

Ps: this post is as about as “PC” as I can get ....

We pulled into a disabled bay on the local retail park, my wife was driving me, she got out and walked to the back of the car to get my stick out of the boot, this bellend said to her “you don’t look disabled to me”, he didn’t notice me getting out of the passenger seat, because my wife had ignored him he said again “I said you don’t look disabled to me”, I said to him “and you don’t look like a doctor to me now why don’t you fu*k off and mind your own business”, he said “I was only asking” but more to the point he fu*ked off.

I think its good that people challenge those using disabled bays who appear not to be disabled but maybe not the best way to approach them

There's enough moans when able bodied use these reserved spaces...
So if no blue badge is being displayed, why not challenge (respectfully)?

A couple of years ago whilst motorhoming in Salisbury I persuaded my reluctant wife to visit Stone Henge. Kath is a blue badge holder and a wheelchair user. After telling the steward about our needs we were directed to a disabled bay right outside the entrance door. It couldn't have been better. After jumping out of the driver's door and heading round to help my wife I received mutterings and looks of disdain from a group standing by. I think they were dumbfounded by my gnarly mountain bike on the rear rack. Anyway we go inside the visitor centre and we discover that my wife has to pay something like £15 entry but as a carer I can enter for free. I was made up with this but my wife couldn't get her head around the fact that she had to pay when she didn't even want to go there and yet I was free. I did chuckle.

Don't know what what a "socilaist" misfit is but if you meant socialist misfit, I'm baffled how, from your version of events, you were able to ascertain that the couple were (a) socialist and (b) by saying what they did makes them misfits. They may be wrong but that doesn't make them socialist or misfits however angry you were by their reaction.

I have had a Blue badge for 8 years now and recently
Was awarded full mobility allowance as unable to walk far
Even with crutches. Looked at the disability cars available
That I would be able to get in and out of easily, and the
New BMW 220i came up on the list. The driving position and
Easy access was spot on for me as didn’t want a big car.
Turns out the BMW was less money upfront even getting
Front parking sensors as an extra. So December 31st I
Took delivery of a brand new Beamer with 4 miles on the clock
and enough petrol to go 6 miles! Brilliant service from them as

Our daughter lived less than half a mile away & had a livery yard with quite a lot of the land on slippery hills, we were often called into parental duties whereby Fliss needed to get up onto the hills to repair fences etc, so we always felt perfectly justified for running such a car. Towing duties have always been a necessity & our current car is no exception, so its a 4x4 but not of the off road type.

You don't need to justify your choice of vehicle!!!

I think the point remains though. As a Socialist myself (and possibly a misfit) I would be interested to know how the behaviour managed to identify them as socialist.

Not really no. But I’m sensible enough to know that the original poster deliberately used the terms socialist misfits and tree huggers to be offensive. I’m surprised you can’t see that, it’s pretty clear if you read it.

It’s no big deal, but it’s rather silly of you to try and deny that’s how he meant it. He wrote it knowing that it would be offensive to some, and he got the reaction he wanted.

The daft thing is that he didn’t need to bring his own personal agenda and “ism’s” into it. He would have got the support anyway, without his silly comments.

Unfortunately no. He mentioned socialist misfits and tree huggers to be offensive and to vent his frustration about these people. He’s defended his stance several times. But the silly thing is that he didn’t need to try and stir it up with nonsensical generalisations. He could and should have just described what they did, and most of us would have condemned their attitude. Even the socialist misfits amongst us that like hugging a tree or two.

But isn’t that just pandering to those that complain in the first place? Can’t we just say that we have a process in place for disability parking and if someone doesn’t like it, that’s their problem.

I know you’re trying to offer a solution, but I fear those who complain about it will still complain about it, even if coloured differently.

I can push for miles in my wheelchair so don’t need the bay to be close to the shops, I need the extra space to get the chair out of the door. If someone parks too close I can’t get in or out.

My wife had a similar problem last year.

She is no longer wheelchair bound, thanks to an operation but, as her legs do not bend properly she must have the car door fully open in order to swing out. Normal parking bays don’t allow the room.

After having a Blue Badge for 8 years she was refused renewal last year as “she was capable of walking”.

She has been prevented from getting into her car on no less than twelve occasions, having had to wait for the car next to her to move away when they have finished their shopping. As standing for long periods is painful it is not a good situation. She has also had to struggle mightily to get into the car in restricted places.

It seems that the rules of eligibility for a Blue Badge now depend on “the computer says yes”.

As your renewal has been rejected you are now making an Initial Application .

If a bay is not available I try and park on an end bay so I can still open door wide...

BLUE BADGE RENEWAL NOT SO EASY ANYMORE
TinaL has recently applied for a new Blue Badge as her existing one had run out.
What a palaver that was! it took ages on line to do and you dont just get one anymore with a letter from you GP, which is good in some respects
They ask what type of disability you have, but also will only issue if the holder currently qualifies for, or are receiving the higher rate PIP allowance.
When DLA was scrapped the lifetime allowance bit was also scrapped, and was as you know replaced with PIP the Personal Independence Payment this involved a personal interview/assessment at home, along with some basic physical tests by non medically trained personnel. The result was that they tried to move TinaL from the higher rate allowance to the Medium rate, which would had had so many negative consequences, not just the loss of her Blue badge.
As the assessor had not written what was actually said on her computerised form, this resulted in TinaL being 1 point short of receiving the higher rate allowance.
We appealed of course and supplied further evidence of why their assessment was recorded incorrectly,the result of which was that they gave her back her higher allowance, but not for life, it has to be reviewed every 3 years from now on, but why in TinaL's case?, that is stupid to say the least! A great example of spending millions to try and save a few quid from those that cannot work!
She has had 2 strokes and was then diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease, she has problems walking any distance, and is now in constant pain from her lower back as it has ceased due to the Parkinsons. She has tremors which affects her arms, neck & head and her speech is affected. She is on a long list of horrible drugs with many side effects, and its degenerative, will only get worse, and yet they want to review her and put her through all the stress of doing so every 3 years.
Her new Blue badge is only valid for 13 months instead of 3 years as it has to tie with her PIP
re-assessment date which is 13 months away at the time.

My main point being is that is will be a lot harder for those even with a Blue Badge now to get another one unless they meet the new criteria that has been set.

This will not stop Blue Badge misuse though as I see every week someone using probably their elderly relatives badge.
I challenged a young slender, healthy looking lady with 3 young children only last week,as she placed a Blue Badge then jumped out her car in full gym kit, collected her 3 fully fit kids from her car. she was taking up one of only two disabled parking spaces at the local shops and I was told to mind my own business when I challenged her.
Her face when I started to take photos of her car and number plate parked in the disabled bay, then I told to expect a letter from the police. The fact that she was driving a 19 plate RR evoke convertible had no relevance to this selfish act, there are so many local elderly people using Blue Badges that actually need one of those two spaces, she just thought it was OK to be selfish as she had her elderly relatives Blue Badge. OH so thats OK then?

We need to see all disabled parking places policed better,and heavy fines issued to those who abuse them, as the level of abuse especially after 5 PM is intolerable, do they think that is Ok to park in them in the evening as disabled people dont go out in the evening? Disabled people using wheelchairs are the ones I feel really sorry for as they do need the additional side space to get in & out of their vehicle. Then I feel sorry for their carer, as I know how much prep each end goes into getting that disabled person out to the shops the re-settle them back at home...its bloody hard work, especially on a daily basis as I did for my late mum.

PS: many car parks including hospitals are now charging Blue Badge holders for parking, which is disgraceful for those who have to attend as outpatients on a regular basis, after all they do have mobility issues on top of anything else. In Fact Hospital Car parking for all patients should be Free as its not their choice to be there.
