Bath Clean air zone

Just to bring everyone up to date , I drove through Bath on my way to Longleat Caravan Club site , blindly following my ancient Garmin Sat Nav and spotted the clean air zone ( CAZ) but found it impossible to turn around in a safe manor.
I Have received a Penalty Charge Notice and appealed on the grounds that I wasn't aware of the scheme and the lack of signage to alert of the zone.
Just received a letter from Bath council rejecting my appeal but they have waived the penalty charge element.
So just as a reminder to all Funsters that if you drive through Bath and you own a older motorhome over 3500KG expect to pay £100 for the privilege.
If you wish to visit Bath you can apply for a discount which reduces the cost to £9 but you must apply at least 14 days before but cannot be applied retrospectively.
If visiting Bath, use the Park and Ride north of Bath clearly signed. Parking is free and no height barriers, the other P&R have heigh barriers. We used it several times when our grandson was at the university until this last summer. The bus will also accept your bus pass!

£100 just for driving an older big MH via Bath is sheer extortion. The Council perhaps reflects the area. Bath itself is a very odd place.
Where do you get the £100 charge from as that does not apply to motorhomes according to the search for Bath CAZ and then follow on to the links where the charges are £9 for motorhomes/campervans (Euro 1t o 5 diesels). Mine is a Euro 4 so would be charged that but if you are going south of Bath then use another route. As i say, if you intend visiting the city centre then use the P&R to the North which has no height barriers (sorry forgotten the name) but clearly signed off the M4 A road into Bath and is free except to the bus but they take a Bus pass!

I drove through Bath on 30th July and triggered the camera. I had no idea I was driving through a zone (I do not know Bath and was caught up in heavy traffic) and saw no signs. The penalty notice came through 4 months later (dated 2nd December) and they are demanding £120 PLUS the £9 fee I should have paid - but of course didn’t as I didn’t know. It is reduced to £60 + £9 if paid within 14 days.
I have sent a cheque and challenged this penalty notice. I have asked them to send me a copy of their procedure to show a 4 month delay in sending out the PCN is within their procedures. Most authorities say it has to be within 28 days. Needless to say as yet I haven’t had a reply. However, so far they haven’t paid in my cheque!. we shall see what happens but I don’t intend to let it go by, especially if they dont respond.

However if you want to be forarmed then just google all UK clean air zones and enter your reg and it will tell you if your vehicle conforms or not.
& is totally discriminatory to foreigners who have no idea that they would have to register. unlike all others EU countries where EVERYONE has to register.

14 days as far as I know. I got one a few years back trying it on after 7 months , amongst other fraudulent & illegal practices as well.

I have just checked my 2015 van 3.85 t and its free, for me according to the gov Web site.

Having checked that would appear to be correct. You can go online at Wic money as they have an excellent parking & pcn forum which is first class. Me, i'd ave checked first but now I'd bounce the check .

Definitely not. That's why we have decided we won't go anywhere where these zones are being introduced.
The garage that MOTs our van is in the zone, but BANES Council told them motorhomes were exempt! We researched it and had to put them right! So the council are incompetent as well as money grabbing!

I also live near Bath. The £100 charge applies to non euro6 motorhomes over 3500kg. Mine is 3900kg so I keep the van away. The signage is not very visible.

Its not easy to get around the zone north / south. But going west of Bath is better than over the toll-bridge into Bathampton. But its further.

Don’t come to Bath without a map of the charge zone. Many motorhomes over 3500kg are classed as heavy goods vehicles, not motorhomes. Well, my Hymer is anyway. Great for paying less VED, but not good in charge zones. If yours is, and you know you are coming, you can get it exempted before you travel.

There is currently no charge for private cars/vehicles under 3500kg. Commercial vehicles under that weight are £9 per day. So watch out if you have a converted van still registered as a van.

The marina campsite is outside the zone.

Council incompetence, hardly a new thing. Our council has given the guys that empty the park bins a lovely new twin wheel transit tipper to drive around in. The paths around the park are only about 3ft wide so there is now a lovely twin wheel sized rut around most of the park collecting muddy water. The transit has gotten stuck twice recently and needed towing out by a tractor.

The charge is unjust, pay once and you can drive around the city all day polluting as much as you want, go figure!

Take it to Haydon Gate garage in Radstock. Thats the only one local-ish to Saltford who I have found that mot bigger coachbuilts/A class. If you like where you currently go in Bath, you can get an exemption.

Ps. Saying hello neighbour from the other side of the main road👍

Yes, we pay the £9 because they are close to us. Cliff has to get the first slot though, as there’s nowhere to park it outside the garage!

Hello neighbour! You live on the posh side then! :xrofl:

We have a similar situation in Manchester which comes into force in May22 (exempted until May23 for some) I live 1/4m from the M60 (Manchester version of M25!) motorways are exempt but I cannot get onto it without triggering a camera which is conveniently placed 200yds from my house with no alternative without being pinged. My privately owned “car” is a Euro5 Land Rover Defender which falls foul of the regulations. The most annoying aspect to theses schemes is that if I buy another one which is 40yrs old or over it would be exempt! There is no rhyme or reason to any of the rulings. Rant over 😂

If you go to gov website for clean air zones, type in your vehicle registration and it will tell you if you have to pay or not?, I hav checked both of my vehicles, MH is ok in all zones but my car I need to pay in Birmingham, worth checking out.

Travelled east to west to stay in Waterside Marina campsite, Bath, BA1 3JT, avoided clean air zone; locals advised follow M4 towards Bristol, on ring road take A4174 to teach the above post code. Park and ride are nearby, just can’t recall if there is a parking area without height restrictions.

I've ranted aboutnthis before, so apologies to anything thinking they have deja vu.

I live close in to Bath and was quite aware of the forthcoming zone. So I went on the council website as was delighted (but surprised) to read ours was exempt.
Then some months later when driving home from a trip I spotted the signs just as I was entering the zone (I have to cross to the south side) and thought
'well I know I checked but just in case.....'
So that evening I looked again and was rather annoyed to find they had changed their mind and now I owed £9.
I called the council the next day and was informed that the lists of exempt vehicles could and do change from time to time, sorry bud.
You do get 7 days to pay, as if that's a consolation.

Anyway, we have now completed on our new house and will soon be leaving Bath after almost 30 years. It's charms have paled somewhat, with the LEZ just another small contributory factor.

I wonder why the air quality has not improved ???
Probably because they have crappy buses spitting out crap!
We went from Devizes to Bath and back a few weeks back and they certainly have not got euro 6 buses running around🙁
Same as London you half choke to death when one passes you…

I have just checked with the Bath and North East Somerset Council as to my vans status regarding the clean air zone. I was told that if the vehicle category on the V5 document was category M there would be no charge. That's for a euro 5, 2300cc, 3850kg gross weight motor home. fingers crossed that the lady has got her facts right.

Is it category M on V5?
According to this page, M seems to be taxi, private hire or minibus.
I can only advise you to double check using your registration number.

AH! should have said M1- which is on my V5 , cars , suv,s, and campervans are exempt.

Looks like we need to check .gov.uk everytime we take our motorhomes out. For Greater Manchester, last week when I checked I had to pay, this week I am exempt to June '23.

Certain categories have been extended to June23 BUT you are not exempt, only reprieved. It’s for you to choose either to “try” and get it converted or buy a new one. The grant to buy a new one is £4.5k, you have to pay for your new one then sell your old one within 2 months? to claim the money. If you wish to buy an HGV the grant goes to a whopping £6.5k! With the same caveat but if you are a haulage contractor with your motors costing in excess of £100k the incentive is somewhat lacking. This whole debacle has been rushed through with not enough time and effort been put into the public consultation, which in my limited experience has already been decided and is just a paper exercise.

Would you recommend Haydon Gate for MOTs? Trying to find somewhere not a million miles away from Trowbridge (where our van is stored).

Edit: Forget that, I was thinking you were south. It's been a long week.

Not sure what you call a million....
