Are you really a FLT...

because im not talking about you, im talking about tossers who make camp in busy city car parks for daysweks on end. Where the end result is a height barrier ruining it tfor those of us who would want to stay for a night. if you do that you are a tosser. Do you do that? No, so Im not offending you then.

I feel sure that anyone parking in a busy city carpark would be ticketed/clamped or moved on by the authorities pretty damn quickly.

I don't see the need to label anyone in that way... or does 'tosser' mean something else where you're from?

Some insist they want to be called a FLT and would have a badge declaring as much if they could, while others will fight you if you do. Have I got to censor this term again to stop this pettiness or can we just accept that it means different things to different people.

Please don't.

I think of myself as a digital nomad, and I don't know what it means to be an FLT. Does it mean a "free living traveller"?

The other thing he can do is to refrain from parking i an area that doesn't allow parking between 8pm and 8am if you are over 5 tonnes.

That`s different to being done for unavoidable noise.

No discount for the over 70’s

Typical. Ageism rules OK!

"free living traveller"?

That has my Vote too. (y) (y) The one on my R-V, was:- "Old Age Travellers".

We stop at all sorts of places, from free wild spots through Aires (free and paid for) to proper campsites. It just depends on where we are and what we want to do. I am quite happy for anybody to call me an FLT to my face or on this forum whenever I stay somewhere that I do not pay for. I take it as all part of the banter that keeps MHF fun rather than boring.

But what I am not happy about is people threatening violence to others on this forum. IMHO there is no need for it, whatever the supposed provocation. It says more about the person doing the threatening than it does the person being threatened.

Its odd to me that people want to be called FLT’s. I my opinion all the people that say they are one, but then say they occasionally pay for site or aire aren’t FLTs. They are just using, as I do, what is on offer.

A FLT is surely someone who NEVER pays, and tends to overstay in one place due to its lack of cost. Then due to this generate a bad name for our type, and stop others using those facilities.

I was called a tosser only yesterday by some yoof I had the temerity to hoot when he just wandered into the road without looking:mad:

I don’t find the term particularly offensive possibly because it’s directed at me quite regularly at work and I have to say occasionally at home.

We bought a moho/PVC so that we could discreetly and respectfully stay off-grid in some nice places, avoiding people (horrible things) where necessary.

I find it quite funny when the motorhome manufactures go to so much trouble to depict their vans as 'stay anywhere' freedom palaces and yet most just end up on congested campsites with old people pulling their water containers.

I'll try and do the 'thing' depicted in the magazine's for as long as possible and if I do ever have to start using campsites then I'll get a caravan and a pull-along water container instead.

He can vary the thermostat. I've known other drivers adjust it in the past whilst the driver was asleep. :)

The other thing he can do is to refrain from parking i an area that doesn't allow parking between 8pm and 8am if you are over 5 tonnes. That was the offence that actually got him the ticket. Apparently 3 people had complained about him, so the council sent out a warden.
If he turned down the thermostat the legally required temp of the on-board cargo would be compromised.Load would be refused and the driver probably sacked. As for parking it's not always easy to plan and when a driver's legal hours are up he has to park up..Not the easiest thing to do in the UK
BUSBY.?

Agreed.

We are quite happy to stay on farms with a nice view.

FLT = Free Loading Tosser Someone who finds a nice little legal stopover somewhere and stops for weeks on end because he can. Showers rarely and collects crap which is stashed in black bin bags under the van. Gets everyone guessing where his toilet waste is being dumped, generally resulting in barriers or no overnighting signs.

FL = Free Loader .
Someone who prefers not to pay for sites and will use aires, out of the way places, (leaving them cleaner than he found them) and well-known gathering spots for similar-minded folk. Some Free Loaders here might like term FLT but they are imposters to it . FL - Correctly known as Wild Camper

I think on the whole it is meant as harmless banter, but sadly some mean it to be an insult and that is a shame because it's not in the spirit of this forum.......but it wasn't nice that the term was coined in the first place.
threatening violence
Yes Robert could have worded that differently BUT the use of :whistle2::whistle2:does suggest that the comment was tongue in cheek, even though the term FLT was not meant to be nice when it was 'invented' and no we do not like it, why should we.
It says more about the person doing the threatening
Of course you are entitled to your view, we all are, I would like to say that if Robert was like that I would not be with him, he is actually a kind big bear, BUT he just does not suffer idiots & nor do I, again why should we.

The weejock coined it over his view of those who take root in city car parks, but it has been used for ANYBODY who wild camps & clearly was meant to be offensive........if it was always used in jest it would not offend, but for the minority it is used as a derogatory term, that is where it can offend people & that is not acceptable.

On that note I am not even going to bother looking at this thread anymore because it has gone beyond a joke & that is not aimed at any individual at all.

I prefer Wild Camper, unfortunately often abbreviated to WC, BUT just spend a few minutes in the excellent Scottish Motorhome Wildcampers fb page and you will see arguments about parking legally overnight or at beaches near houses NOT being wild camping but Free Loading.
Seems to me everyone’s after a fight these days.

Shame, live and let live would be easier all round

Exactly ????

I think we need a new & acceptable term for "FL" folk, "Free Acceptable Recreational Travellers" now what does that spell? In my case I like many others need to put OLD in front of that anacronym.
Ah perhaps not?? Or maybe this makes all of us smile & have fun, onwards & upwards.

We stay on many free sites in France and Portugal and sometimes stay for a number of weeks. So I guess that makes us FL's.
Because they are free, I always try to improve the place for ourselves and other motorhomers.
I have fixed broken black waste facilities, (like the covers on Euro relay) replaced missing shower heads, removed graffiti from toilet doors, gone round and filled black bags with rubbish etc etc.
I think if everyone did a little bit to improve the sites they stay on, we'd all have lovely clean fully functioning facilities to use.
Unfortunately, some do the exact opposite, they break things, leave their rubbish, (for folk like me to clean up) and often steal stuff like showerheads, tap handles, light fittings etc.
An example of breaking stuff was a French bloke removing a toilet cistern lid with a push button flush. He just pulled it off (because he obviously had no idea how they are put together) and broke the flush mechanism in the process and then dropped and smashed the cistern lid, which he then dumped in the wheelie bin. Why TF he was removing it in the first place is anyone's guess.
:france:

How much are the landing & parking fee's for a DC4 these days?

I`ve had another look at the pic in Post 20. (not my post BTW) I think it could be a Corvair? or Convair?. But likely a DC6-B Pan Am had some, and many where sold on for "service" elsewhere.?

Ohh!! And as for FLT`s. Free Living Travellers will do for me!. Better that, than being a Pi-Key any day. (y)

If anybody HITS someone because he didn't like what he said, that guy is, in my book, a (You Know What).

If anybody THREATENS to hit someone because he didn't like what he said but doesn't, that guy is, in my book, a fake (You Know What) and a bit of a joke...
