Not quite right maybe? I think air tags work on bluetooth technology whereas the laptop would be signalling its whereabouts via wireless and GPS. You would need to be near the air tag to "find" it whilst you could be anywhere on the planet (with a wi-fi signal) to find the MacBook.
I thought these things when out of range would get promiscuous and connect to any other apple air tag user that passed by?

The tags broadcast a rolling encrypted identifier via Bluetooth. Nearby Apple phones receive the message and send it back to the mother ship with the location. The central system has the keys to decrypt and identify each tag. Your app then tells you where your tag was last seen.
