Hi,
looking for recommendations on navigation apps that can be used with Apple play to our new unit please

I decided to get a pioneer head unit with apple play rather than a hardwired satnav .

it works brilliantly but I’m yet to find an app for my iPhone that allows vehicle dimensions to be entered .
I’ve tried all of the usual suspects - waze, google , Michelin , tomtom , sygic etc , amd whilst they all work really well as navigation for cars , you cannot enter your vehicle dimensions .

anyone found an app that does ?

many thanks
Russ

I’m not sure how useful the dimensions are. If the navigation data isn’t correct (or specific enough) you can still be suckered into travelling along narrow roads. Happens all the time abroad.

Thanks for all the replies .
still not found a navigation app that allows vehicle dimensions to be entered .
I used Waze on a trip to Pembrokeshire this week, whilst following a friend who had a snooper satnav in thier Moho.
if I’d followed every turn directed on waze I would have been stick down narrow lanes everywhere for sure.
it tried routing me through crazy places, but our friends snooper kept them ( us ) on the main / larger roads all the way to our site in St David’s .
think I’ll have to buy a snooper , which is crazy when I spent so much on a unit that didnt have a satnav built in.
until Tom Tom or similar make an app for caravans / Motorhomes Im not going to risk getting stuck in my 8.5m van down a narrow lane with a low bridge !😂

Copilot does all that you want, it not to expensive and hasn’t let me down yet got me into trouble.

Does anyone know where any of these MH apps gets their data from? I mean who has mapped the width of all the roads and bridges in the UK, or do they, as my Avtex Sat Nav seems to, just route you down main roads?
As an aside - careful using Wayze - as when driving my car in London it can take you down narrow streets and even through housing estates. If 2 Wayze users are on the same street heading to the same plays Wayze will deliberately route you both differently which can lead to the above.
I have sygic truck installed. It is useless. You can be travelling on A roads, dual carriage ways and motorways and it will randomly take you into B roads. No obvious reason - not even a diversion, just bad algorithms. The maps are from TomTom etc so are pretty good, but as you ask, where are the road sizes coming from? In France last year, Sygic took us up a mountain pass. All good until we started down the other side where the road became only just wide enough. We later checked and found that there was a perfectly good road and tunnel under the mountain which Sygic totally ignored! On another occasion, we were taken up a road that became so steep I doubt the tour de france boys could have made it let alone a truck or motorhome. We now just use waze or google maps for guidance, but there is no easy way to check for low bridges or narrow roads other than the old Mk2 eyeball.

thanks . I did try co pilot a while back but it wouldn’t work on Apple play at all . Has there been an update recently perhaps . Do you use Apple or android ?

CoPilot is not compatible with Apple CarPlay. I use Google and Waze, I never got on with CoPiolt and it still sent me down silly lanes if they didn’t have legal width limits.

Have you managed to get copilot to work with Apple play ? It doesn’t work for me

I didn’t think so , but dle54 seems to have got it to work ?
Perhaps he is assuming all apps work on CarPlay but has not tried it.

My last SatNav tried to take me through a low and narrow archway on my first trip out!
The arch (in Ludlow) would appear to be renowned for catch SatNav users out - there is a special sign there to aid diversion - but why don't the SatNav people correct it? It doesn't matter how often 'updates' are made, they still don't have accurate data.
Even if they do collect data, it's only likely to be for the few rigid structures (bridges). They will not allow for low branches or cars parked on both sides of a street that may have been clear at the time of any survey.
Learn how to re-route, avoiding a discovered restriction. I once travelled several kilometres to arrive back at the same 'route barré' because the SatNav insisted on taking me that way!

One thing worth remembering is Waze was designed for commuters and as such avoids any hint of traffic and routes you down the fastest alternative route which is often back lanes.

I have a nice fast A road between my town and the next town but Waze would never route me down it, preferring to send me down small windy back lanes. Wouldn’t mind so much, but the A road was running fine.

Now settled on TomTom on my phone and CarPlay compatible. £13 a year with maps saved locally to the phone, so no map downloads when out and about.

Late entry to the conversation - just testing out OsmAnd on iPhone …. Looks like you can customise the profile for your vehicle, and store maps off-line. It’s also CarPlay compatible. Does anyone have any experience of it ?

Sorry for the late entry to this thread … I am just trying out OsmAnd, which is an off-line sat-nav app, which can be fully configured for vehicle dimensions. It works on IOS and seems to be CarPlay compatible. Just wondering if anyone else had experience of this system ?

cheers

Hi.

Not heard of this before. Just tried it but it has a limited number of free maps so I will be deleting it.

You are right, but I think you can download 5 for free, so that covers the majority of the UK (except the East and South East, which is the limit of my range at the moment)

Tomtom have now added a truck version to their android auto app so will hopefully add this to the ios version.Unfortunately it costs £99 per annum subscription.

Been using this for a few recent trips. Don’t really like the navigation display colours, it’s all a fit fiddly to set up. Maps aren’t expensive compared to a customisable sat nab. Took us under a 3.4m bridge even though the vehicle dimensions were set to 3.5m. Luckily we are 3.35, but it’s hardly reassuring. Last trip out directions to Nottingham from New Quay in Wales suggested go via Manchester. 🧐

SatNavs are best described as fantastic some of the time.

I have Sygic Truck, CoPilot Truck both pin iPad in the cab plus a head unit with Apple Maps, Google Maps and Waze

Just come back from a trip to Budapest and back - used CoPilot all the way along with a large scale map view on Apple Maps on the head unit so you could really see where you were in the country - never let me down.

Got back to England and went out a few days later and CoPilot sent me down a road with an 11foot 3 inch high bridge (dimensions set at 12 feet - did go under - phew) and a width I could only just manage to get through by pulling my mirrors in.

Moral is - rely on your common sense first!

Are you set on only using your phone? I’ve used The Club “Snooper” and always found it very useful….

Hi. We have recently picked up our new Van, Globecar 540 which has the pioneer Avic evo1 DT2 C GR installed. Whilst this has Apple car play etc , the built in pioneer sat nav is Motorhome specific and does allow measurements to be put into the vehicle profile - I only mention this in case this is the same unit as yours.

When we bought our Globecar Roadscout Elegance, we wanted a SatNav designed to cope with a campervan, i.e. where you could enter the van dimensions. We asked the dealer for advice and they recommended the Pioneer AVIC-Z830DAB. We went ahead and got them to install that. It was expensive but I think it's pretty rubbish.

So far, it has provided navigation along routes which were NOT suitable for the size of the van at least three times in six months; for one of those, I had to do a 6-point turn on a very narrow country road just past a bend when the road narrowed to 6ft for a bridge.

When I use it in my local area, it often suggests routes which are not ones I would choose myself.

It's not great at detecting traffic problems and it's not intuitive to use.

In spite of downloading map updates twice in the last six months, it still gives out-of-date information.

Needless to say, I don't recommend it!

I have a very similar Pioneer model. We've been directed along all sorts of unsuitable roads, but the stored dimensions are only relevant if the navigation data is available and correct.

I agree about traffic problems. It just says "traffic jam ahead". No indication of how far. Usually we find no delay.

Do not select shortest route as a navigation option. It will literally take you off a main road and through housing estates if this saves a few metres. Don't ask me how I know :)

I just love iGo Primo, which I use on dedicated 7" and 9" Sat Nav units.

You can download it for Android or Apple.
https://www.igonavigation.com/ Whether or not it can be used with Apple play, I wouldn't have a clue.

Providing I use the correct .ftr files when updating the maps, the unit never puts a foot wrong, when the correct dimensions, weights, axles, and a trailer are added, (where applicable).

The currents map updates which have just become available over the last couple of days, are 2022 Q2. I am currently on 2021 Q2.

I have not paid any more than £70 for one of the 9" units, as that particular one came with a built in dash cam.

I know someone who has downloaded a later version of iGo Navigation onto a 9" Samsung tablet, and swears by it.

As an example of either.

Cheers,

Jock. :)
