Ants

Ants are great 🤩 don't think there'll be a competition this year but the ant Olympics will be back at some point 😁

Vinegar mixed with washing up liquid to help it stick. They don’t like the acid in the vinegar. I also feed them polenta which will kill them.

Lemon juice helps break up their scent routes. Are you on a campsite, are all the pitches experiencing the same problem, any of the locals have a solution?

Move. In my experience there will be an army of them moving along a general route, those going away will be telling all the others where to go. If you cannot move, look to see if you can find their route and try to deal with them there. I say try, because I think they will look for other ways if you don't move. Just be grateful that it's not mice or rats!

We had ants on our patio last summer and our usual method was to pour boiling water over them.

This year a conservatory has been built in place of the patio and we were horrified to see an ants nest and flying ants in the threshhold between lounge and conservatory. Couldn't do boiling water on the carpet; couldn't use ant powder or anything that would harm the dogs so..............sprayed with flea killer ..............result! No ants and no return. Probably wouldn't work on a campsite in the open air but it worked for us.

Vim or Ajax around the EHU. Lead on the floor and around the tyres. This really works. Where you would get some from ?

We gave loads of red ants that seem to be appearing from under various places of the back lawn. I disturbed all of their excavations with my shovel yesterday and was surprised to see loads of them had grown wings.
Beware the impending plague of flying red ants in SE Cambs.

Cant move on site for two weeks
They are marching up the front of the van and entering via everywhere . Think its a case of live with them.

Ants are very clever creatures, and so strong.

We have them in the lawn every year and very soon they’ll be flying away which will be ideal for the swallows to feed on.

I think the best solution to your problem is to move.

Might be worth asking at reception to see if they have any strong ant killer that you could use around the van. Otherwise see what you can buy locally if you can’t move. Ferreteria might have something. Just a thought.

Every year for the past 5 or 6 years we have a few days in July when ants/flying ants come in through a corner of a window in our kitchen. Always the same place. We’ve tried resealing it etc but no joy. I am just poised with the poisons and after a couple of days or so it’s over. We don’t have pets. We were lucky this year that it happened just before Stratford otherwise we might have come home to a mess!

When we had Ants in the van they were coming in via the hook up cable through the so called sealed battery box, i put a lot of washing up liquid on the cable and that stopped them.
Morning

You can put talcum power on the cable as they dont like walking through it as its not as messy as washing up liquid

Works in the jungle on our hammocks to deter creepy crawlies

If you are near a Lidl they sell a product called block magic it is a pump spray. The critters won't cross over it. It is safe to use in the house. The effects last about 2 weeks.

Have found the ant run up the front wing so spraying with dettox type stuff seems to stifle them so thats the plan of attack. Raining so got all day for revenge.
How do they get onto the wing? If you can find the spot you could use Vaseline etc to make it difficult for them to cross, either that or the ants will love it and end up with very 'soft' feet!

They are crawling up the tyre and somehow onto the bodywork then upto the awning cassette and entering where ever they can . It was amusing watching them yesterday until we realised they were inside. Just found some insect spray in the camp shop so we are armed and dangerous.

Morning, Your ants must have found a food source, usually something sweet. A scout was sent in and found it and then went back to base and sent in the troops.

Can you create a 'pool' all around the tyre? If so then they won't be able to reach it in the first place ... might be an idea to do all of them though just to be safe!

You'll get some funny looks I'm sure from the other campers but who cares if it keeps the little blighters out. :giggle:

I'd move forward or back by half a tyre rotation, then try to break the route.
See if you can find what is attracting them in your vehicle and remove it (leave it outside in the old track, perhaps). In my case it was a packet of boiled sweets.
Do nothing, and the ant word will get around and what was a battalion of the blighters may grow to an army.

They havent found the food all in the fridge . Only tinned stuff in cupboard. But they found the bin loads in there and my bucket outside used for all the empties there must of been a thuosand in their on the walk of shame this morning.

Buy half a dozen jars of jam and leave them outside with the top off. Put them on the little guys highways so they find them instantly.. They'll soon forget about the crumbs they found in your van 😉👍

We always keep a couple of ant bait stations in the MH, once pitched I put one under the van, might see a couple of ants the first 24 hrs, after that none.
