We are heading to france next month for our first time abroad. Van is plated to 3850kg so do we suck it up and stick the angles mortes stickers on the van or do we wing it??
Same question re motorway tolls. As I understand it we can't get any of the toll tags as over 3500kg. We don't intend using motorways much so I assume we just pay as we go by card. What do all you experienced people think?

With regards to Toll Tags, I use the standard Emovis Liberte Class 2 tag on my 4 tonne MH. This was on the advice of a tag company that does HGV Tags. They asked for the full dimensions of the MH before giving me this advice.
This they based on if the initial trigger at a Toll booth in France is the height of the vehicle (ignoring accessories, Sat Dishes, etc). If the height is below 3.10m then it flags the vehicle as Class 2 and does not use weight unless it is very heavy), The said that a Class 3 tag (HGV) will not operate in this situation.
As my MH is only 3.05m they said that the Class 3 tag would, in most circumstances, would not work, and they refused to let me have one.
I then did a 4 week tour of France, with the Class 2 tag and had no problems at all.
Just checked with them and info to me was the overall height is taken into account ie including accessories? But that may have been via their chatbot? The main advantage would seem to be going through the auto lane however then there is not an opportunity of pressing a toll button asking for a 2 clarification!

Very useful and informative in relation to insurance. What are your thought on registration and traceability on cycles so the insurance can be utilised and claimed upon by the many third parties suffering dings, dents and scuffs from cyclists who then disappear into the night? I’m all for following the law and compliance but it needs to be an even playing field and regretfully from where I sit it feels extremely one sided at the moment with far too many on one side only too willing to play the victim far too easily. We need to get on and look after and protect each other on the road, but that cuts both ways.
Even playing field between a Bike and 4.5ton or more motorhome - come on! The important point is the safety of the cyclist. And it's their Country and their Law so respect it or if you disagree don't travel to, or through, France - simple.

Have a look at:

In the ‘Remarque’ section over on the right.

I think aircon units might be a moot point, but that does appear to refer to them being included in overall height for HGVs, along with refrigeration units and sleeping quarters going by the illustration.

“Do not affect the calculation of the total height:

- Loading a vehicle or trailer on the roof

- Accessories, such as: antennas, chests or roof bars, rotating beacons, taxi signs, parabolas, lanterns, solar panels.

Have an impact on the calculation of the total height:

- Elements added to the basic vehicle, such as: habitable cells, air conditioners, refrigeration units.”

I’d have thought the automatic barriers would work on the basis of a height detection beam. We have Fulli and they imply that they go on Reg plate recognition if the tag doesn’t work, but I don’t know if that implies that any vehicle details are cross referenced with DVLA. I hope not because we’ll be registered as PHGV +3.5t but height below 3m.

Thanks for putting into better English all I wanted to say myself! As I am now retired , I tend to forget a few things in English. BTW, please do not forget Funsters that I rely on your corrections to improve my knowledge, and no, Jim won't warn you or even send you to Coventry if you do so, as he knows I ask for these corrections!
TIA
Amicalement

Frankie
Frankie,
Your English (particularly spelling) is way better than some posts from those who have English as their only language!
The flow of your words both in English and French is a pleasure to read!
