Actual vet charges for Animal Health Certificates across UK

Starting from scratch, no previous EU or UK passport.
My plan is to have rabies vaccination done in UK and get AHC.
Then once in EU (or NI) to see a vet over there to get an EU (or NI) passport.

- Will my dog require another rabies vaccination at that point, even although she'll just have been vaccinated a few weeks earlier in the UK in order to get the AHC, or will the EU/NI vet accept the UK rabies vaccination?

I would hold fire on the AHC until just before you go to N Ireland. There are talks going on to try and drop it fir travel to Northern Ireland.

It's what I plan to do.

The requirement for another rabies vaccination in order to issue a Pet Passport seems to vary from country. We know from our own Helen Ariel that in Portugal it is not necessary and the vaccine details can just be copied over into the new passport. However, I have read of cases in France and Germany where a further rabies vaccination is required, although there is no clinical reason for this to be done. Best to check with individual vets in any EU country before you make an appointment. Hopefully over time there will be enough reports back from Funsters and others to enable some sort of database of EU vets to be created.

Casper had Rabies jab in U.K, and 30 days later blood test in France, it then took 3 weeks before test results came through. At that point he got his French passport.

Just about managed to get through this tome! Best suggestion is, I agree, is to compile a list of vets with prices for different regions.
We are just adopting another dog and I have had a quick ring round for AHC pricing and details as follows.
Vets4Pets £154.75 Apparently this fee is set by head office for all branches??? and any other vets in the group. Did not ask for price for second dog.
Broadway Veterinary Hospital in Peterborough said they would only want £36.50!!! which included a consultation. Rabies jab £38.
Pengelly and Mizen vets in Peterborough quoted £125.00. Again I did not ask for price for second dog.
Based on the information in this thread I now intend to visit the veterinary practices and get written quotes, including those detailed above for clarification and confirmation.
Interestingly I was told by one vet that I could obtain an EU issued Pet Passport when visiting the EU and then I would not need an AHC after the first one!!
As soon as information available I will post.

Much kudos to Broadway Veterinary Hospital. (y)

I have put a link to their website below:

https://bestfriendsgroup.com/find-a-vet/branch-page-broadway

Interestingly if you click on their ‘Find a Vet’ heading there are a number of ‘Best Friends’ branches across the East Midlands and also the London area. Might be useful starting points for Funsters in those areas.

A special prize to whichever vet it was that confirmed that EU-issued Pet Passports are the way to go! 🎁

Recap - the good guys so far

For the purposes of this thread, I am regarding £75 as the upper limit for an AHC. Still a lot of money for what you get but reasonable compared to so many others.

1. Paul Jarman Veterinary Surgeries, Norfolk. £50

https://www.jarmanvets.co.uk/

2. Ruddington Vets, Nottinghamshire. £54

https://ruddingtonvets.co.uk/

3. Priors Leaze Vets, West Sussex. £65

https://www.priorsleazevets.co.uk/

4. Andre Cirone of Pets Abroad UK, Surrey. £75

New addition to the ‘good guys’:

5. Broadway Veterinary Hospital, Cambridgeshire. £36.50

Best price for a named vet so far. (y)

I have asked the Best Friends branch nearest to me and was quoted £132 😱.

Oh dear, how wrong can I be, eh?

Which branch was that, please?

It was Dagenham. I sent them a few message. This was the reply.

The cost of a AHC is £132.00. Unfortunately our vet is not currently a OV so we cannot issue them at the moment. We do have other branches that can issue them.

Ok, thanks for that.

So Dagenham branch go into the Hall of Shame - but 3 cheers for the good guys at Peterborough! (y)

Just had an email back from my vets responding to my enquiry, they are charging £125 -Carterton vets Oxfordshire

I called DEFRA today to confirm what I was reading on websites

AHC will defiantly be required for first visit to EU.

Getting an EU pet passport is all ok you will no longer need a AHC to travel back and forth and save a fortune:ROFLMAO:

One issue is that only an EU vet can do the Rabies vaccinations and fill in the passport British vets are not allowed.

We now need a list of fair priced EU vets issuing passports(y)

Have to say lady was very helpful and also commented on the money you will save having the passport and not AHC

Another pricing update from sunny Peterborough.
Companion Care Vets based in Pets at Home, Bourges Boulevard, Peterborough.
AHC £155. I said it seems expensive. Reply-It is not us its is the government that sets the price!!
Rabies Jab £55
So Companion Care Vets have to go on the naughty step.
FYI Normal Vaccination £36 but Lifetime Vaccinations £99

Excellent - thank you. (y)

It’s good to have official confirmation of what we’d managed to piece together for ourselves.

Companion Care Vets - hang your heads in shame. Not only profiteers but liars as well. (n)

Help please as my brain is now bleeding. If I decide to get an EU passport in France for my dog, do i need an AHC for the first time visit (exit UK), which will have proof of rabies, microchip and other vaccinations, which will then be transposed onto the new EU (French) passport? Or alternatively will they accept a vaccination record/book which will have all details written on it including rabies and microchip?

you will need the AHC first trip. my understanding is it will depend on the country and the local Vet if they will accept your Rabies vaccination and blood test results.

you will probably also need the original Vaccination documents.

Right guys. Apologies for this but I only posted what I was told.:( I have visited Best Friends Group at Broadway Veterinary Hospital to register our new dog and the receptionist said "I am very sorry but ALL the prices I gave you on the telephone are incorrect. Update as follows which I now have in writing:-
AHC £132 plus Consultation at £33
Rabies Vaccination £60
2nd vaccination and subsequent vaccinations for Lepto etc. currently £38.
Would not mind if they were a little out but these are huge differences!!
Difficult to get comparisons when the vets do not know!!
Sorry about that but that puts them down the list now.
I think I will get on the naughty step now.

That’s a shame - but no worries. Thanks for letting us know. (y)

It’s Broadway Veterinary Hospital who should be on the naughty step, not you! :hugs:

I will see about amending the ‘Good Guys’ list .......

Please note that the ‘Good Guys’ list is now back to its original 4 vets after Broadway Veterinary Hospital in Peterborough turned out to be ‘mistaken’ in their telephone quote. See post #380 above.

The day just got better ! ! Had my first Covid vaccination. Then decided to ring my vet back as they had not come up with a figure for the AHC.Alphapet said provisionally £125 + consultation fee !
Spoke to a small independent vet practice a few miles away but still in Chichester and a definite £65 inc. consultation.Yippee I will be going away when we are allowed. They were completely on top of the procedure needed.
PRIORS LEAZE Vets,Nutbourne,Chichester !! Coastal Cruiser should be interested in this.
Thanks for that👍
We use Mrs Darling on the Main Road next to the Chinese takeout.
Dogs are due for teeth clean and nails so will ask her then if to much will go with your suggestion.

What health issues could a dog have if say you had the rabies jab a month before going away then got an EU passport and had to have another rabies jab about 3 weeks after to come home?

The potential health issue is vaccine-associated sarcoma.

Hmm! Doesn't sound like a good idea.
Makes me somewhat concerned as a Spanish resident that our dogs are legally required to have annual rabies injections. (n)

Yes, I really don’t understand why Spain feels the need to insist on that. It’s not good clinical practice. 🙁

We phoned our vets in Dover, AHC £54.00 plus consolation fee of £42.00 last for 4 months. to be done 6/10 days before travel
Thanks for that. Not low enough to qualify as one of the ‘good guys’ but better than a considerable number of other vets. (y)

I have contacted my local vet and enquired re the cost of the certificate. I’m afraid to say my vet is on the naughty step - £125 incl vat.😡. The practice is Lanes Vets, Lancaster.
