At the risk of turning this into a "twitchers" thread - here's what I found sitting in my garden this morning. They are nesting in a tree next to our bedroom window and they provide me with an early morning wake-up call.

I was once told they were the local community laundry - all the locals would come on designated laundry day to do their washing and have a good old natter. They always seem to be next to water so that would be a good possibility.

Yes, they are definitely Lavoirs. Used for communal clothes washing in days gone by.

Some are fed from a spring while others, like the one 100 metres from our place, are built beside a stream. The separating wall has a tiled, sloped surface, allowing the clothes to be dipped in the stream, scrubbed clean and, again, rinsed in the stream. The floor on the Lavoir side is below the stream level so the need to bend is reduced. A classic design, totally fit for purpose.

Visiting the varied design of Lavoirs is something of a sport in southern Burgundy. A bit like train spotting I think.:)(y)

While I hung the washing out, then had to go to the bike shop for more brake pads for my bike ? €20.60 my second set they last about a year, but we have some hills and you need brakes. ?

We’ve seen one being used a few years ago, lady arrived in her car and did her washing, no house close by.
And we always try search out the local lavoirs.

I wonder who has seen these buildings in France, and actually know what they were built for

Though now most are showing their age (over 150 year old for the youngest I've seen) a lot are in really good condition and are cared for by their communities

Both these locations are still in use in the south of France earlier this year.
