In his latest review , of a Globecar Summit PVC, Peter Vaughan of MMM mentioned he'd been told that the 9 speed auto " didn't have long for this world"

Anybody else heard anything ?

Does it need 9 gears? I've only ever seen the auto on my Merc go into gear 9 once and I think that was in Germany.

They have a V6 petrol engine though. I think the engine is from a Jeep? They've never used the ZF9 as far as I'm aware.
The new 2.2 Multijet3 also came from the jeep. I wonder if the USA gearbox could come here instead of the ZF?

My 160 certainly makes use of it. With the cruise control on, and in ECO mode on the autostrada, it’s in 9th all the time at 105kph and the engine is only pulling circa 1600rpm. It will change down to 8th when on an incline but goes straight back into 9th when it levels out. Fuel economy is also excellent as I’m invariably seeing 30+ mpg out of town.

I heard ZF were making a ZF9 variant with the hybrid motor built in. Maybe it's not beefy enough for motorhome applications?
But the ZF 8 is fine in a DAF LF? So sure it is?

The ZF8 is a totally different box for longitudinal applications. It's used in far more vehicles.

The ZF9 sits on the side of a transverse 4 cylinder engine. There's not nearly as many cars and vans use the ZF9.

So how come BMW use the ZF9 in their rear wheel drive cars?

tehy don't too my knowledge onl the 8.the 9 is only used in there fw drive cars.
The ZF 9 was developed for transverse engines first &foremost & is also used in 4 wheel drive models so possibly the bmw X range?

Eco mode, maybe that's the reason, I'm always in comfort so I'll have to check. Even so I'm getting 60+ mpg on a decent run even in the UK.

60+ mpg? I have to have a very light right foot to get that in my wife’s little 1.6 CRDi Kia Soul ‘Go Cart’. What fuel are you using, Dilithium Crystals?

I’ve been driving with cruise control off most of the time. When in cruise the 9 speed seems to use a lower gear for the same speed so higher revs and presumably higher fuel consumption. Using normal mode. Fiat 180hp.

I think there are certain sweet spots - depending of course on the road conditions, vehicle weight, etc - where it will sit happily in 9th and give good fuel economy with the cruise control engaged. Mine does it at 105kph/65mph, which is fine for me on motorways and decent dual carriageways, so maybe the ECUs are in agreement at that point!

Reading threads like this make me happy with my 2.8jtd(re-mapped) 5speed manual.

At least if I break it I know any half-decent mechanic can mend it.
Only the 5th gear to worry about but boxs are available or can be rebuilt easily now as most gearbox specialists have done plenty.

Ps dont cost ££kk like the comfortmatics.

Never had any problems with the 5th gear on ours, had to sell to finance a house restoration, now bought another MH and on the X250 platform with 3 litres and 6 speed manual, superb.

Had a 5 speed drop to bits years ago, they got starved of oil as they are a bolt on to the 4 speed.
Hope the 3 litre is as good as you say as we pick our new to us up in 4.5 weeks.

I am a lucky perisher so don't get problems like other people !!

The 3 litre is really good, smooth, has plenty of power and is good on fuel. Our ARTO cruises at 65mph with total ease and returns 25 to 26 mpg (on the dash).

The gear stick is so close to the steering wheel that it might as well be one of those paddle shift auto's.

Now you are just being a wind up merchant.

The 3 litre 160 hp engine is superb and can we count Lancia as Fiat?
No wind up intended, you would have been laughed out of town in the olden days if you mentioned you were going to buy a fiat.
What's so good about a lancia?

You Sir are a heathen !!!

I would choose a FIAT powered MH over a Mercedes but you would have to have some knowledge to understand why.

Regarding Lancia, all I will say is Lancia Delta Integrale, look it up, I had one and they are every bit as good as people say.

For a commercial van which these fiats are, how could you put one in the same league as a transit or sprinter, or even pushing it a Renault derived van.

5000 in 1988 as they needed to build that many to be able to enter in competition, after that it was good selling car considering it's extremely high price. In the day it would see off just about any car (bar none) on a winding slippery road.

Re FIAT MH's, the engines are actually very good in my experience and being front wheel drive it allows for much more imagination on double floor setups like in particular Hymer use but also many others.

I see absolutely loads of FIAT vans being used and quite a few as ambulances etc. They work well.

Sprinters are good but not exceptional, also looks like Toyota are teaming up with Setlansis for their next van, they must have confidence to do that.

My brother's electric work van is a Toyota Proace. It's just a rebranded Citroen Berlingo.

When I was driving vans I had a transit that did 200000 miles before I had it nicked, and it never had so much as a bulb go.
Show me a fiat that can do that.
