My very old cheap Chinese inverter is having problems and I need to replace it. I only have a single leisure battery but the inverter will only be used for a short period. Which one would you recommend, I don't intend to run anything near 2000w but I'm thinking overcapacity is better than under.
Thanks. John

We have an NDS with automatic switchover to all sockets. Been running for over 2 years, coffee maker, roof aircon, induction hob etc with no problem.

I've got one of these, not the cheapest on the market but does everything I need, micro, kettle, toaster tv etc (not all at once) 😁 even been trialing under the counter household fridge freezer which could becoming permanent fixture.

Renogy with ups switch over no problem.so far 2 years

I've had a look at Renogy they seem good but several reviews about nonexistent customer service, has anyone contracted them?

Not me, never needed to. I will say I didn't use the supplied inverter to battery cables as they didn't look up to par and they weren't long enough anyway.

Yes I was unfortunate to have to contact them concerning a solar controller that didn't work straight out of the box.
Support is in China so they email you in the middle of the night in "Chinglish".
You then go through the long drawn out process of emailing them pictures and videos.
They wanted to send me some internal parts for me to replace and solder on.
As the controller was brand new I refused.
They told me I would have to pay the carriage to return the controller to China or I could keep it and they would give me a 10% refund.
I declined and had to get a refund via ebay.
This was from their official eBay shop.
I believe they just drop ship as all dealings are with China.

Have a look at used ones on eBay. The other day I stumbled across a xantex 2000w for less than 300 quid. Xantex now are owned by Schneider.

We have a Sunshine solar 2000w, 6 years works fine, now in a shed with some solar and batteries

A Renogy 2000w in the van, about 18 months works fine. Prefer the Renogy as nicer looking and only single neg and pos posts, also has EHU passthrough which makes a big difference for us.

We bought the Renogy via the Renogy website and had an issue with one of the corner fixing feet being broken on delivery, they refused to replace the small plastic foot and wanted to just give me a discount. Without 4 feet it was awkward to fit securely so elected to return for a refund it took more than 3 weeks for them to issue the refund, they really did not want to do it, lots of photos of unit and packaging, in fact they told us that their returns were very slow and we would be waiting a week for a response to the returns request, never mind the actual refund.

In the end to get the install done we bought another via Amazon (bit cheaper), confident we could easily return it if necessary, although was willing spend pursuing a Renogy return

So Renogy support and returns, slow and a bit rubbish, unit works well, but would not now buy direct always via Amazon or another reliable supplier.

I've just bought a Renogy 3000w ,- to say I'm impressed would be an understatement. I love the auto feed through/auto switch over

We can run the microwave and kettle at the same time with power to spare

Agreed, buy through ebay or Amazon and at least they will refund you if you have a problem.
Their ebay shop advertises as Official Renogy UK shop and says they're in the UK, which it probably is, but its registered in China and any problems you have to deal with China.
They just drop ship to a UK address.
I'm not knocking their products but their after sales is shocking/non existent.
I've also remembered that besides the solar controller not working there was a cable and MC4 connectors missing.
They wanted photo's and video of the missing parts.
How do you even do that

Thank you everyone for the replies. I have bought a Renogy from Amazon, it was a bit more expensive than buying direct but a solid guarantee and faster delivery.
I'm going to wire it directly to the leisure battery with an isolation switch and then wire in a socket, any help with fuse size and cable size would be appreciated, thanks

Am I being a bit thick here, quiet at the back 😊, how else would you wire it if not direct to the leisure battery?

Would you wire it so you plug into the inverter and bring a lead to a fixed three pin socket?

Sorry if the above is obvious questions 😊

My old one worked from a 12volt Hella socket, I want to do a better job with this one.

Ahh that makes sense now.

Are you going to tuck the new one away out of site?
Yes I'm going to fit it in a locker and run a cable to a socket in the kitchen, all this so Mrs. Ex can have frothy coffee when we're off grid 😄

Yeah don’t we know it.

I’m committed to fitting one for a hair dryer and straightening tongs 🙄

Does this type have to have a training lead fitted to the inverter then to the socket?

I intend, although I will read the instructions before I actually fit it, to run a cable directly from the battery through a fuse, to a switch and then to the inverter. I will put a 13 amp plug in the inverter and run a cable to the kitchen, or as close as I can because the gas locker is in the way.

Went with Victron and runs coffee machine , toaster and induction hob no problem..Not all at once..But i did notice that stamped on the back is "Made in China" 4 years and has not missed a beat. Added a remote switch.

Most electronic stuff is made in China now

Renogy 2000W. Had one installed in my rig for a year, fully hardwired. Works perfectly and can deliver a constant 2000W until the batteries give out.

My experience of Renogy customer services:

  • i complained about a duff solar panel. took a photo, explained in email, panel was replaced FoC. No need to return the original
  • same story with a solar charge controller which I had accidentally damaged
  • same story with a lithium battery where the bluetooth had (unbeknown to me - temporarily) stopped working.

No complaints at all. I repaired the solar panel myself and the battery bluetooth (nothing ever wrong with the battery itself) came back to life by itself a few days later and has worked fine since. Feeing guilty after the new battery arrived, I informed them and they just said lucky you, keep it. I worried a little bit that with all the free replacement stuff they were sending me they wouldn’t be making any cash, but somehow I doubt it.

Conclusion, It’s all good stuff, and they will look after you if you have a problem, you just have to wait a day for them to reply to messages.

I bought the Renogy 2000w inverter from Amazon & installed in my Auto-Trail V600 just before our trip to France where we are now. The ehu passthrough works well for us. Just used it for the first time to boil half a low wattage kettle of water for coffee. We have 2 x 104AH AGM batteries, 5 years old and a single 100w solar panel. Draw was 72amps and usage was just under 6AH. State of charge went from 100% to 95%. Within 15 minutes the solar brought it back up to 100%. So I’m quite impressed so far.

I did have some dealings with customer service as there is nothing in the manual about wiring the ground point on the inverter. After several emails over a few days they advised me that a 4-6mm2 cable should connect the ground point to the van chassis ( or, I presume to the leisure battery negative which is connected to the chassis).

One mistake I made was positioning the inverter on a wooden shelf directly above the truma boiler. When heating water the inverter casing became very hot to the touch so I’m minded to relocate it.

I wired direct to the Leisure battery positive terminal via a 200A midi fuse and an isolater switch and via a victron shunt on the negative side.

I threw away the cheap Renogy supplied battery cables and used 35mm2. Batteries to inverter distance is under a metre.

If I reposition the inverter farther away I’ll use 50 or 70mm2 cable. I’ll likely wait though until I get round to fitting an under (drivers) seat 230AH lithium battery as everything will need rewiring ie Mppt solar controller and dcdc charger.

On the mains socket side, I disconnected two feeds from the Sargent mains socket output connecter (one for each side of the van) and connected these to the inverter outlets. The mains in feed to the inverter is from a remaining socket that I relocated next to it. If the inverter ever failed it would be easy to take the plug out of the inverter & connect to the ehu fed socket.

I've had a sunshine solar 2kw pure sine wave since 2020, used all the time for coffee machine, induction hob, hair dryer, the occasional drill and multi tool.
Never had an issue with it.
Cheers, Liam

I've just bought a Sunshine Solar pure sine wave inverter to replace my cheap modified sine wave inverter.
I've not fitted it yet but it was recommended by members on here (y)

last motorhome we had I fitted 13 amp sockets upside down to show they were off inverter , and logic told me when using a hairdryer or straighteners for the wife's use, the lead is going upward so why fit them so the lead has a bend in it to go vertical ?
