Chess would be the obvious choice?

The problem with Chess, and a number of the other 'skill' games, is one person is 'skilled' whilst the other is not.
Which means one person wins every time and the other loses every time.

The skilled person does not get much of a game as winning is too easy,
and the other person does not see much point in playing a game where they lose every time.

Hence games that involve a large degree of luck are better, for example backgammon, as no matter how skilled you are, a beginner stands a chance of winning.

Apologies if this is in the wrong thread. I'm looking for any recommendations for a good, fun, not too complicated board game that works with just 2 players? We're off on a 3-4 week trip next week and it would be good to have a game of some kind to occasionally play instead of watching tv or reading, particularly after dark.

If anyone has a game that they like to play or can recommend something they think would be appropriate then I'm all ears.

If you fancy trying some more modern boardgames specifically designed for 2 players I would recommend:

Jaipur

Splendor Duel

Fungi (aka Morels)

Botanik

Schotten Totten

Codenames Duet

All have small boxes and don't take up too much table space.

Would also suggest

Sky Team
A 2 player only co-op where you assign dice to various parts of your aircraft to land it successfully. I’m not usually a co-op fan, but I like this one a lot. The pieces mostly work well outside, although there are a couple of cards.

Fjords
2-4 but best at 2. Tile laying game where you create a map, and then place longhouses and vikings to control the most territory. Looks pretty and works well outside. Games are quick.

Project L
Race type game where you arrange pretty pentomino tiles to fill in puzzle spaces. No cards, works well outside. 1-4 players.

Mindbug
Clever 2 player card game where you summon mythical creatures to fight each other - but at any moment you can turn the tide on your opponent by using one of your two Mindbugs to control their card.

Sea, Salt and Paper
Addictive little 2-3 player card game where you collect sets. Each game is quick so you can play a few.

Good Morning!
This is a great topic for us as we love board games!
Ever present are Scrabble and Backgammon, others are rotated trip by trip.
They need to be compact, reasonably short play time per game ( I’d say 20-40 minutes) a bit of thinking/ tactical action involved.
We have quite a few of those already mentioned and now there’s a few to look into for the future!
My recommendations…
Cartographer .. it just seems to fit nicely with the motorhome travelling ethos. It’s about drawing maps on a grid and scoring points within that. It has artistic qualities too.
Patchwork… make a patchwork quilt from assorted “pieces” of cloth. Seems simple at first but very strategic.
Phase Ten.. quite new to this card game but I can see it becoming a favourite, small enough to slip in.
I’m always looking in charity shops for small table top games, often just £1-£2 gets you a decent one, but also risky if too many components that may have some missing.
We have far too many games… it’s a bit of an addiction!

Another vote for Rumikub, also Monopoly Deal - its card based so great for flight based trips. Can get quite spicy as you can really stitch up an opponent...

Like Ludo but with a vengeance

Ask an old RN serviceman how to play. It was great in the mess square watching the "playful" arguing over "blobs", "mixy-blobs", "blowbacks" and "suckbacks", as well as accusations of "timber shifting". Many a game ended in bloodshed

Even better if you can use an old wooden broom handle cut for the pieces (and painted using Flight Deck paint), the board also had to be covered in Perspex, sealed around the edges with "harry black maskers" and the dice kept in an old "Tickler" tin.

I say an old sailor as apparently modern sailors play cards, another tradition slowly dying out.

There is an Ex-sailor selling Uckers sets on line. My lady got him to make a special one for me with the crests of the "Junglie" squadrons. It was a bit too big for Florence so I made a smaller one to take away.

That's a brilliant game and can be played as a solitaire game and by 2 - 4 players. Play competitively or cooperatively.

1. 2player
2. Able to fit in lockers
Best game is 7 wonders duel…every game unpredictable and different.
Honest runners up Jaipur (trading game) and Fungi (excellent collecting game).
Honourable mention to Fist of dragon stones, Citadels and Queens necklace.
If you like it more complicated, All creatures great and small is a blast.
Nothing wrong with cribbage!
