120 days in EU, problems with MoHo Insurance, travel/health insurance and mobile contract

Not sure I would be comfotable with accepting any insurance for however long because no matter what anyone says the current rule is 90 days and until PM Liz and her new friend Macron (forget what she said about him prior to her last meeting!) get things sorted out, 90 days is it. Oh and while they are having their next little cosy chat could they please sort out the Pet Passport fiasco and allow property owners who pay French taxes to stay as long as they like.

I’m not sure I understand your post? Is this posted on the correct topic?

Luckily not for us; EU passport bearing wife. 🤪
Please check the rules, this link will help: https://europa.eu/youreurope/citizens/travel/entry-exit/uk-nationals-living-eu-country/index_en.htm.
Have a search through the site to find your exact situation.
this link has a good overview too. https://costaluzlawyers.es/blog/the-schengen-90-180-day-rule-puzzle-explained/
If you are a UK passport holder then the 90/180 day rules apply regardless, even if you have an EU passport bearing wife :).
I have a UK passport, German wifey, post Brexit residence permit for Germany and the 90/180 still applies to me, the rules have changed since the full exit, I am lucky that I don't get my passport stamped when leaving the Uk after visits if I wave my German residency card and with few border checks the time we spend in different countries is not easily checkable, but for you guys coming out of the UK and getting stamped as you arrive in the EU/Schengen zone - your time starts then......

I did 4 1/2 months in Europe and Turkiye starting late March and returning early August . I also have Comfort insurance and had no problems . I did have to get a green card at the Greek/Turkiye border for 90 €. My phone and Netgear MIFI both had Smarty SIM cards ( Turkcell for the 4 weeks in Turkiye) fair usage. I didn’t have travel insurance ( first time ever ) which was a calculated risk at 70+.
I had no problems crossing back into Greece, as I still had 11 days of the 90 left. Once back in Schengen area, there were no border checks and when I left France for England, a cursory glance at my passport and no comment about the overstay.

Thanks for your message Roby2008. Both the links are telling us the rules for UK nationals. I accept all they say,

If you start from the correct position, as an EU National (in my case my wife), she has a right to roam and reside in the EU, provided she can support herself and is not an undue burden to the member state she chooses to visit and or live in.

This is all set out in 2004/38/EC it’s a long-standing and enshrined right for EU citizens to be accompanied by their spouses, who then enjoy exactly the same travelling/residency rights as the EU citizen (but only) whilst travelling with them.

I hope this clears this up okay?

If you read the European directives it is very clearly stated that if your spouse is the bearer of a Eu country passport that you are not falling under the 90/180 rule so please don’t confuse people with links to lawyer firms with vague info who want to earn money, just get the correct info from the EU website, it’s not difficult to find!

I consider myself chastised, just trying to be helpful because these rules have an impact on me too... :)

I’m not sure it was meant as a chastising as such, importantly it was to point out that we need to be careful that well meaning, but incorrect information doesn’t dissuade people from using this excellent opportunity afforded to a few of us. 👍🏻

Obtained from Directive 2004/38/EC

(5) The right of all Union citizens to move and reside freely within the territory of the Member States should, if it is to be exercised under objective conditions of freedom and dignity, be also granted to their family members, irrespective of nationality. For the purposes of this Directive, the definition of "family member" should also include the registered partner if the legislation of the host Member State treats registered partnership as equivalent to marriage

including the Motorhome in the EU
No if over 8 x metres unfortunately. :(

Sadly I exceed the length quite considerably! ☹️
Us too Harvey. :(

TBH, the Nationwide's FlexPlus Breakdown cover, is the only aspect of their insurance we can't make use of for the MH.............when abroad.

Because of previous major remedial surgery (3 x lots), for Rita's condition, we get hammered with a hefty surcharge to cover her medically. :(

Although we are bound by the 90/180 ruling, I am keeping an interested eye on your thread Harvey. Good luck getting it all right. (y)

Cheers,

Jock. :)

Thanks Jock… I’ve got to (I think) the stage where I going to do four different contracts:

  • Motorhome insurance to include 120 days (calling Comfort today and Saga already have a quote)
  • Separate fit for purpose Breakdown Cover (JockandRita I seem to recall you use a specialist company?)
  • Multi trip travel insurance with a specific 120 day period included
  • Mobile contracts for the phones with sensible fair usage and EU usage as a fair price add on (EE looks best here so far)
Plus a 5th
  • Starlink isn’t quite right yet as I can’t flat mount the panel, so will go with the excellent Tiekom service again…
Fingers crossed that’s everything sorted then! 🤞

Ok for you wife are you sure that will work for you? I would check on the government website
It worked ok for you this year no problems👍 Until you got home😮 but that was a totally different thing🙂

Look at popit mobile. allowed 6 months usage outside uk and also allowed to use all of your data whilst roaming.

I know some people on here have done many long extended tours in the past. Brexit and Covid have probably meant that many fewer do this now days.

With Covid hopefully behind us in terms of major impact, we intend to spend four months 121 days away from 26th December in France and Spain.

What I think I shall struggle with is insurance for both ourselves and the MoHo. We are currently with Comfort for the Motorhome and breakdown (7.3T and 9.35m MH) and with LV for annual multi trip insurance. We are fortunate to have no health conditions which cause any insurance constraints. However both these insurances do not seem to be set up for 120 day trips. Anyone any ideas whom I should contact for these types of policies? Anyone any luck with LV and or Comfort in extended Euro cover?

To further complicate matters, our policies both expire and need renewing whilst we are away. Obviously most documents are online these days, but printing hard copies for my travel folder becomes more challenging.

WRT mobile phone (not big data), EE seems to be the optimal as they offer a £10 add on per month per mobile which provides unlimited roaming. They do have fair usage and proof of residence restrictions, but it seems relatively easy to argue these. Any other options?

Thanks in advance everyone… 👍🏻

Don’t forgot to look at your House Insurance
Most only cover for 90 days empty but you can easily get round that by getting a friend/relative to stop a week while you are away so it’s never unoccupied for 99 plus days
Enjoy your trip, jealous as we were planning a long trip round all of Scandinavia inc Iceland and the Faroes but Brexit has put the kybosh

Fulham Dave - just went through the quote process with Nationwide. Annual multi trip with one 120 day specific trip was around £262. We are both mid 50’s, no impacting health conditions. So a bit cheaper than globelink, but does require a NationwideFlex account to be opened.
That's great 👍, glad it worked for you. We will require at least 2 trips of 120 days (or unlimited if we could find one). Enjoy your trip!

I'm with Comfort on a full time policy I am covered unlimited mileage and 365 days in the EU however it is very expensive, if I've remembered correctly the regular policy covered up to 7 months in the EU and 12,000 miles. The breakdown cover was £65 extra and covered my 8.3 mtr 6 tonne Hymer, the service was good when i broke down in France and even paid £500 towards my hotel bill whilst waiting for the van to be repaired.

Carpmart - if you're renewing insurances whilst abroad there aren't any problems but you can't do it if you want to change companies. We have renewed car and motorhome insurances whilst in France no problem.

If you need to print out documents you can get them printed at local Tourist Offices - we've done that too! Think it cost about 10cents per page so just got them to print the relevant pages.

I have just returned from a month in Spain and France. I wanted to watch Netflix and so I bought a Spanish SIM with 150gb of data. This then could be used in any EU country and be renewed at the end of the month if required.

In the end Harvey, we went with Saga's Motorhome specific policy, (which having recently double checked with them), is void of the usual restrictions that their provider (RAC) imposes upon individuals. It appears to be a decent level of cover for any size/weight of MH. IIRC, there is no 90 day restriction on that cover either.

I have had it in writing just very recently, (due to a justified level of doubt), that our 6.8T, 8.5M MH is covered in the EU, by their breakdown policy. (y)

The annual policy, including the breakdown cover, was just short of £510, less than Comfort quoted without breakdown cover.
Providing there aren't any changes to the policy, that premium is honoured for 3 x years.

HTH,

Jock. :)

Have you tried safeguard for the van and staysure for health?
