120 days in EU, problems with MoHo Insurance, travel/health insurance and mobile contract

That's great - which company did you deal with?
We were recently left completely stranded by AVANTI medical cover when my wife needed surgery after a fall (having arrived in Spain only that morning!). Having had to deal with hospital, surgeons, rearranging ferry travel to UK to get to hospital here, and all the Covid clearances in under 24hrs was a nightmare.
We haven't bothered with travel insurance since, although recognise that we're on our own if we get into trouble.
Alliance Motorhome insurance....once I became unable to drive....But they handed me over to a specialist group who deal with repatriation....
My Sport insurance covered my hospital stay etc...

Do you have details of LV travel insurance - on their site they say their multi trip Premium level only covers up to 90 days!
I think that right for multi trip policies. Ours was a single trip.

Sorry to drag this up again (old age)
What are the limits on NW Flex re dimensions, weight of motorhome.
I ask because Harvey's van isn't exactly a mini.

From the Nationwide Flex Plus Account details:

  • Vehicles must not exceed any of the following dimensions:
    • Maximum vehicle weight: 3.5 tonnes (3,500kg) gross vehicle weight
    • Maximum vehicle weight for motorhomes: 7.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight
    • Maximum vehicle width: 2.55 metres (8ft 3in). This must make up the overall width of the vehicle bodywork excluding mirrors, measured at the widest points.
    • Maximum vehicle length (in Europe only): 8 metres (23ft)
Please see the policy document - PDF 330KB (opens in a new window) for more information on vehicle eligibility.

Sadly I exceed the length quite considerably! ☹️

Indeed, well worth having…
As part of the withdrawal agreement those of us who live in Eurozone still qualified for the EHIC...we have new cards...and thankfully the UK travellers were granted on leaving the new GHIC.....which I imagine put many minds at rest....fearing this would not be so..,,,,👍🤔😃 Still worth applying for.👍🇪🇦

Lv multi is 90 day max I think but they do single trip, which might be up to a year , worth looking into

Uk citizens retain the EHIC untill they expire, then they switch to the GHIC card. Ours are valid until 2025.

I’ve just purchased an extension with nationwide flex account travel, & noticed that the options went up to 180 days. 60 days cost an extra 72 for the two of us (65 & 56), one health condition each. Hope that helps!
Was that just for a single trip or for the whole year?

It’s for the whole year, for two of us, but is also of course, on top of the monthly fee for the account -£13. I think the breakdown cover for all our vehicles makes it very worthwhile for us.

Thanks, I thought it might be but wanted to check, I've started a new thread about my situation:

When away in the MoHo i carry a printer so that i can print maps or documents, it's a small Epson Deskjet, tucks away in a overhead locker with my camera stuff, takes a minute to plug into laptop.
Also useful for printing confirmation emails if you have to show hard copy.
Cant help with the other stuff at the moment.
Good luck.

I know some people on here have done many long extended tours in the past. Brexit and Covid have probably meant that many fewer do this now days.

With Covid hopefully behind us in terms of major impact, we intend to spend four months 121 days away from 26th December in France and Spain.

What I think I shall struggle with is insurance for both ourselves and the MoHo. We are currently with Comfort for the Motorhome and breakdown (7.3T and 9.35m MH) and with LV for annual multi trip insurance. We are fortunate to have no health conditions which cause any insurance constraints. However both these insurances do not seem to be set up for 120 day trips. Anyone any ideas whom I should contact for these types of policies? Anyone any luck with LV and or Comfort in extended Euro cover?

To further complicate matters, our policies both expire and need renewing whilst we are away. Obviously most documents are online these days, but printing hard copies for my travel folder becomes more challenging.

WRT mobile phone (not big data), EE seems to be the optimal as they offer a £10 add on per month per mobile which provides unlimited roaming. They do have fair usage and proof of residence restrictions, but it seems relatively easy to argue these. Any other options?

Thanks in advance everyone… 👍🏻
I’ve had a quick read through and think most issues have been covered but worth checking your house buildings and contents coverage. Many stipulate a maximum unoccupied time hitch can be as little as 30 days. We used Marks and Spencer for our 90 day trip earlier this year.

Have a good trip.

A great point but we live in a ‘commune’ with my daughter and her family. Picture a cross between a Bedouin camp, squat and a HMO and you will have it…. 🤣🤪

We have used Safeguard for Motorhome insurance, if our new Motorhome ever comes we will try them again

Aviva 270 days MoHo insurance and great cover. LV= did the same for their extended trip travel insurance but we are both fit and under 60.

You can only be away for 90days since you are olu of the EU. So first hink about this as it may hamper all your planning. Regards Ray

Thanks for your post. How did you get both of these? Online or did it require calls to explain? Also, would you mind giving us a rough cost for both? Thanks!

Are there any VAT implications for taking the vehicle abroad for that legth of time, as it seems there are with boats visiting Europe?

Hey Chaz

Sounds like poor training of the border official. Bellow is the Directive 2004/38/EC pertaining to freedom of movement for EU citizens and their close families… as a spouse I qualify!

I’m interested in this, does that mean if I apply for an Irish passport (mother born in Ireland) my husband would automatically be eligible too?

Not sure why there would be? You can only stay in one EU state for 90 days as an EU citizen, but you can roam freely as an EU citizen (or in my case a spouse)… what prompts your question?

We have been roaming since May, no one is interested so far, I always hand over a copy of marriage certificate with the passports but border control just hands it back without showing any interest.

If you sail from, say, Portsmouth to Chergbourg for the weekend, you need to have proof of ownership and VAT paid in the UK or face with being chareged VAT for importation of the boat. It was all supposed to sorted out during transition, but has been a pain this summer. Boats kept away for more than 6 months may be treated differently, but at the moment it's akward. Maybe it's a numbers game, and there too many vehicle movements for HMRC to keep track of, while boats are relatively slow and can be tracked on radar and AIS.
My particular interest is that we are expecting to take our van to Sweden after the beginning of March (winter tyres needed before then), and keeping it there for the summer, once our work permits are granted. Long term we'll bring it back to the UK, and look for the same van in Europe, but LHD and European VAT paid. Currently we're doing the 90/180 day shuffle and keeping the van in the UK.

I know little about boats. My answer is therefore from a MoHo perspective. As long as you can prove your ownership (documents you should be carrying anyway) I’m unsure of the problem.

Assuming a UK registered and that you are, taxed, insured and MOT’d (if needed) then as long as you keep it road legal in your home country (UK) and can prove good title (not just a V5C) then I’m unsure why you feel you would have an issue even if you’re leaving the MH whilst away for 90 days?
