Ah yes ... another government gem!

That was what was thought to be coming into play in July not August, my above post suggests that it is now going to be mandatory to have a medical assessment of some sort.
I’m some ways that’s not a bad thing, it could also help people to keep fit as they age where possible.

Erm why dont folks just look at the DVLA web site I cant see any changes

From that site:

"You can drive while your licence is being renewed if you meet all the following conditions:

  • you have the support of your doctor to continue driving ..."
That would just about cover it!!

It has not yet come into effect. According to the article 90 day letter will start rolling out on 1st August. Nobody is being ambushed. My licence will be due renewal in 12 months time. I will make sure to align the 90 day window with my annual health check and, by then I will be due another visit to the optician so will do the same there.

I sincerely hope that someone somewhere has come up with a check list form so that GP's can just tick boxes and sign.

I do support the changes. We are all driving lethal weapons and the loss of freedom going with loss of licence is massive so there needs to be some assessment to weed out abuse. Every three years is hardly oppressive.

I don't believe the story. The 1st of August is the week after next and I've seen nothing about this before now. Click bait.
Only required for people with medical conditions.

I think you’ll find 7.5t class C1 requires a medical every 3 years. Just done mine. Class C & CE however requires an annual medical.

While medical fitness is definitely an issue, Imho the bigger issue with road safety in this country are the actual driving skills. A driver appraisal scheme would bring much more benefit much more quickly.

I would also love to know how many unlicensed drivers there are on UK roads.

True but if you'd watched the TV documentary you'd realise that there's a need for something to be done.
I don't hear you complaining about the 100s of people Killed by either Drink or Drug Drivers who are obviously harder to catch & convict. Pick on the Owd Uns easier to penalise.....😡😡😡

Form to be signed by your GP, i wonder how much will doctors charge for that service?
I was told by my GP when I used to have one to retain my PSV & HGV, as it's private work, they can charge what they like.

When it got to £125 for mine every year, I suspended (not gave up) all except my free car licence.

This is just over sensationalised headlines from questionable news sources. The changes (if they are to be believed) are very minor and do not change the self certifying applied to a B licence. There could be some changes coming that increase the chances of the DVLA asking for a medical report after an application has been made, possibly even some random requests but we are not being threatened with all over 70s having to submit medical reports with their application for a B licence renewal.

Don’t panic Mr/Mrs Older person.

I too think it's a wind up.

I don't think this is a wind up, I think it's another of the Government's tactics that they have used a few times, and that is, to start a rumour to gauge the reaction of the public.
IF the reaction is good, they will bring it into law.
IF it's going to lose them votes and support, it will be quietly dropped.

Most people use the private ones these days, £50 ish on a weekend.

They have already done the consultation and don’t need rumours to know what the public thinks. They could certainly do without a flood of extra DVLA enquiries based on rumour. Sorry, can’t agree with you on this.

But they have only consulted Consultants.

They now, using AI, want to know what Social Media thinks.

Hasn't the Government already, publicly, criticise the DVLA?
Perhaps they want to do it again to change it?

84% of those responding to the consultation were individuals not organisations.

How many individuals and their ages, especially the over 65's.
84% means nothing without this figure.

In the countryside where I live, ones own transport is not a luxury, it is a necessity when the 3 buses stop running at 12.35 and the train station is 3 miles away.

Driving skills? Where? 😆

I tend to agree though I'd like to see a proper driving test for cars along with re-testing everyone, regardless of age, every 5yrs.

It's bonkers to think that only those over 70 need a medical.

I would also support there being a familiarisation training course for the towing of trailers, caravans and use (not just driving), of campers and motorhomes.

I think we need to support such changes if they become likely/possible if only to improve the 'leave no trace' concept as well as demonstrating to Joe Public that it is just a minority of motorhomers who deserve the criticism and that most motorhomers are decent & respectful.

What it means is that most of the responses were from individuals not from organisations and consultants. I read the consultation when it was discussed on an here a couple of years ago but didn’t respond.

I was just asking about the number because, as you know 84% of a 100 people is 84 the people but only 8.4 % of a 1000

I was surprised at my last renewal when I told dvla that I no longer needed glasses to drive that they believed me without requiring evidence. I could have sent my last optician's prescription showing I needed less than half a diopter correction after my cataract op.

The strange thing with driving skills is everyone thinks they are a good driver and it's someone else that's the problem
Maybe we would be better with a revalidation test with the frequency increasing with age.

Don't panic, my licence is with the DVLA at the moment and I'm awaiting it's return.

It runs out the end of August and I'm 80.

There was no extra medical forms with the reminder and the only extra that stopped me from doing it online was, a new photograph.

If there are any problems, I will keep you all posted. 👍

As I promised to keep you posted, my new licence has just dropped through the letterbox so I'm okay until I'm 83👍

No new forms or notices! 😄

I sent it away 11days ago by tracked post but, as I wasn't sure if I would be here to sign for it, it was returned 2nd class mail.

Well done DVLA! 👍

From what I’ve seen with the standard of some drivers I think they are giving licenses away with breakfast cereals 😳

I have ALWAYS thought and advocated that EVERYONE that drives should be forced to have an professional eye test every 5 year, as in other countries, before their licence is renewed.

An eye test can reveal so much more than just the condition of your eyes.

I personally, had past my car, motorbike, truck and coach tests BEFORE I had an eye test.
I thought everyone's vision became slightly blurred after 200yards and it was only after I tried on my elder brothers new glasses that I noticed the difference.

Perhaps there are thousands more drivers out there, even Funsters, who don't realise they have poor eyesight? 🤔

Years ago three of us used to share the driving to our place of work to keep costs down.

One day we said to our one mate about what was on a road sign.
He couldn’t even read it and thought that’s how it was for everyone 😱

A week later he turned up driving with glasses 👍

Also he had always ridden motorbikes 😳

Talking of Government gems, in the same post as my licence, I have just opened a letter from the Dept.of Work & Pensions informing me that, as I am approaching 80, I am entitled to a higher amount of State Pension.
Age Addition of 25p a week will be payable from my 80th birthday.

Yippee, I'm rich! 🥳

Whatever will I do with this new £13 wealth?

50% of the first page of the document tells me how, if I want to appeal AGAINST it and the next page explains the equality act 2010.

What a waste of time, paper and money! 🤬
