It's a wider question than just France. And applies to the UK, too, though we're likely to be more aware of local and frequented ones.

It's a scene that is becoming more widespread, changing rapidly, locally, and is a function of your vehicle's age, engine, weight, tyres, etc. It doesn't help that for a given city, it can be tedious to work out no-go areas and routing around them.

Any practical answers?

Italy would turn my hair grey if it hadn’t already changed colour. There isn’t a country wide system, apparently you need to apply online each time you are going to enter a emission zone (ztl)
Yesterday we drove through a small coastal village with pretty much one road in and one road out, there it was, the dreaded to sign.
I’ve given up, looking at all the old vans we see on holiday the authorities can’t be that interested in getting them off the road.

I sue the 'Green Zones' app to check where the zones are.

I don't subscribe, but can see where the zones are, and can plan accordingly.

Would a sat nav be sufficiently up to date to warn of these?

They can sometimes be a bit behind. When the London ULEZ was extended to the former LEZ boundary, I had to Wait until the next map update for it to route me accordingly, I use CoPilot caravan and it updates 4 times a year, however I'm generally very happy with the app, if you set it upp correctly for your vehicle it's excellent in my opinion.

Waze is apparently all over this, if you dig into settings you can set your crit air status for France. For Italy you can also see ztl zones, see photo. Waze seems to avoid these areas, but how accurate it is, is anyone’s guess. But I’ve now disabled it as we don’t have a euro 6 engine, so Waze will select a compliant route but it can add lots of unnecessary miles and send you down some very rural roads. There are lots and lots of vans much older than ours here in Sicily, so I’m avoiding towns where I can, and keeping my fingers crossed.

What's a to sign?
Is the market in your photo relevant to emission restrictions?
Sorry auto correct from ztl. The sign directs you out of the low emissions zone, but some joker has turned it so if driving, you would be hard pressed to see it.

So if you see that sign you are already in the ZTL - and the sh*t

Only on this occasion we were walking. Sh*t avoided this time, other locations we may have transgressed.

I was of the understanding that in Italy you only need a sticker in the Bozen-Bolzano area at the moment?

And presuming you passed a sign like this to get into ZTL.
Though it is an odd sign because, surly Ucita (Exit) Z.T.L is in both/any direction once your in it except via the sea in this image.
Where was it taken?

Bolzano Province is the only low emission zone that requires a sticker.

Z.T.L's are zones of restricted circulation, situated in Italian cities that have historic centres.
Only local residents and registered vehicles are authorised to drive there.
Some are time specific but should you need a pass, you'd need to contact each local authority to apply for one.
