Wheel bearings

As above.
You have had them done and were happy with them. Don’t worry about the know it all armchair specialists who don’t consider all the facts. I’ve changed these bearings myself, so know what the job is like. Also quality of bearings varies a lot, and of course getting both done at the same time will be cheaper than two separate jobs.

£195 for both bearings sounds like a reasonable deal to me.
Garages have to make a profit, you have two new wheel bearings / peace of mind, and you got a mince pie!
If we’re able to afford it, then that’s fine.
Don’t let people make you feel bad, everyone know someone who could have got something cheaper elsewhere, till you try to find them....

Oh you've already had it done..
Why worry then, if you were happy with what you paid.
Mk7 bearing on amazon is £18.99
I could get you a real quote on monday from my motor factors if you were that fussed but a bit pointless if you've already had them both done.
Sounds like you've paid for peace of mind there rather than what had actually failed, although you've not stated what you actually paid so who knows. :xlaugh:
Hello thanks for the advice, the garage charged £195 for both fitted.
Free hoover out driver and passenger side and said free winter check and levels, antifreeze etc all good and topped up screen wash for free.
Even got a mince pie and seasons greetings.

Says genuine skf bearings on invoice and as I know nothing about these things I think I prefer the genuine reputable brand or equivalent and somewhere to complain, rather than a possible fake part from the Internet.

I didn't think I have been ripped off, but now doubting myself.

Thanks for the moral support, from what I gather if the bearing fails completely it is very dangerous, I would buy some. Windscreen wipers off the Internet, I wouldn't feel safe with critical parts from who knows where.

£100 per hour. That's proof that most garages are thieving scum.

Top mechanics are on £35k ish. That's £17 per hour. Thieving garages cream off £83 per hour themselves.

SKF bearings are excellent quality and i would happily have them fitted to mine. As someone who has done the job on a transit, you did well at the price you got.

I find it better not to talk money on forums, there is always someone willing to pee on your parade.

And who in your little world bought the bearings.
£100 an hr indeed
And such bitterness toward the motor trade
The price charged represented £40 labour + VAT + bearing inc Vat per side and about £15 for his freebies
I again suppose in your world freebies are free.
Step back and take a lighter look at the garage trade check out the facts,,rent, rates, wages.insurances.compliance checks, calibration fees ohl and lets not forget profit
I do it for a living not a hobby.
And before you come back with another vilification you should know in order to offend me I would have to value your opinion, and I dont

Thanks, I can see both sides- a part from Internet for something non critical and IF you can fit yourself--
A set of wheel trims or seat covers my limit perhaps.

From what I gather SKF are a good brand and like tyres you can buy cheap or better brand, both work- just how well and how long

I don’t know what my local garages’ hourly rate is, and don’t care! I have total confidence in him and his colleagues, what is important is that I have had to go to him with a problem, when due to leave for a tunnel crossing, and he has fitted me in immediately and worked till late at night to let me get away in time. To me that is more important than an hourly rate.

Very strange I put 2007 transit front wheel bearing in Google and didn't see £20 bearing they were all with fixings and 40-60 pounds.

I thought I had been treated fairly, now I don't know what to think and yes had both Done as don't want to be bothered by it again - it will be scrapped or I won't be driving hopefully before it needs another
Ignore yorick he seems to be on a mission

I am happy because
1) I would rather a brand on something critical
2) I couldn't do the work myself
3) I don't think I was ripped off as chose the second bearing to be done, it went from the slight noise to horrible in 5 miles.

And if someone trusts a £20 Chinese bearing and can fit themselves--good luck to you. My husband used to fiddle with the triumph years ago, he's gone and a piece of flat pack furniture my limit.

I don't think you've paid over the odds, doubt you'd have got it much cheaper but you certainly could have paid a lot more.
My bro's just been on the phone, his daughter's Focus needed new discs, pads and a wheel bearing and was quoted £400. He said he would do it and now he's coming round to mine with the hub carrier that now has a snapped bolt in it, that likely, a garage wouldn't have broken in the first place, and he wasn't aware that the ABS ring is "printed" on the back of the bearing, and if damaged or scratched, renders it useless.

Oh dear I remember weekend Saturday trips to scrap yard for a part years ago, good luck with it

The problem is a garage has overheads rent rates non mechanics wages eg accounts stored the list goes on including people’s pensions or should the mechanic be working in a field somewhere

Are you happy with the job and satisfied with the quality of the parts.

If yes don’t trouble yourself with what others say.

SKF are quality bearings.
I know people who have gone cheap on bearings and regretted it.

£50 to £60 ish an hour for an independent garage is about the norm here.

I was quoted £620 for cam belt and water pump change from VAG Dealer.

Mate had his done for £380 at an independent.

I did it my self for £130 because I could.

You pays your money etc ?

Csmith sorry you have come up against this side of fun. If you have a good garage and trust them thats all for the best. Like you and have had in the past, both sides done. Dad was an excellent mechanic and always advised it, (he ran haulage wagons, wasn't a car repair place)
Do what is best for you get out and enjoy that van and have as good a christmas as you can.
