Still for urban areas (and Norden / Corfe area* 🤷‍♂️) but 5G is capable of >180Mbps down & >100 up (iPhone 13 mini in Newbury town centre).

So 5G Mifi could be a handy stop gap for a budget minded Motorhomer.

Coincidence, on one of the YouTube channels I subscribe too Sean has just put out a video on the Starlink System. It is for a boat but maybe worth a watch. https://www.mvfreedomseattle.com

We saw a fifth wheeler with a StarLink dish on the roof at the weekend - seemed a good solution (as the mobile data rate was pants). It looked like it didn't move much as there was no truck around capable of towing it

In the UK I’m paying £10 for 60gb limited to 12gb when Roaming, however that’s when local SIM’s come in.

Mine can all be used whilst on the move.

I’m struggling to see the value in such systems……it’s a question not a statement, so what are the advantages? 🤷‍♂️
v high bandwidth ~super low latency providing 100Gb in 4g black (Or grey) holes, anywhere in Europe and beyond , no sim limits of time or useage. no cross border geo limits.

It is still substantially more expensive, less convenient (you have to set the antenna up once stationary) and uses more power. So it's not yet a no-brainer solution.

For yachts, only £10,000 up front costs with £5,000 a month service charge (SuperyachtNews) o_O
The issue for me is you have to put the antenna out to use it.

Nope, the RV and Yacht versions do not require you to setup the "dish" in the traditional manner, it works "on the move".

Cheers

The "on the move" feature has only just been added to the US only so far. It's licence dependent, but we'll probably get it soon.

I was under the impression that the antenna used servos to point itself in the appropriate direction. How long is that going to last when it's adjusting continuously and against the wind at motorway speeds?

So, I needed to know. What is the difference between Flat face Starlink ( Round dish) with mobility enabled , ( move to a different location but Tell Spacex) versus new Rectangle Dish with RV capability - it just works where ever you rock up subject to Starlink Coverage ( all of England and all of EU) except very very Northern Lats.S0 I bought both and tested them in the same location at home, where i have Fibre to the premises FTP.
Is there enough interest for me to document and publish the test results or is it a Meh? moment? of course th e really valuable test is at different locations in the UK- coming soon over summer.

I dont need or expect it to work while we are actually mobile in the RV

My Carthargo warranty is screwed by drilling and my wife doesn’t trust me to DIY. This led to a creative install over the Tow Bar! with some random bits from local trailer supplier. I keep the extendable flag pole in the garage, clip in the Dish to the Stralink Pole mount , plug it in to the router installed in the garage and squeeze cable through the door Jar/joint compressing the cable : no damage so far. 5 minutes at any new location for 50-150 Mb download. Early news: Beats any 4G sim based hassle when travelling in Europe but of course a bit toppy in terms of price, but then my wife’s business demands guaranteed High quality Zoom on demand, so i had 2 choices a) find a solution b) tour Europe on my own. She doesn’t know it works….Yet…🤔😂 1st world problem, but happy days.

BTW every UK RV dealer i have presented Starlink to consider the technical support overhead to be a barrier to participation. 🤷🏼‍♂️

I live in rural Lincolnshire where the fixed line and mobile broadband is pathetic.

That's unfortunate. You'd think that as the county is quite flat it would be better. We are much luckier, I get similar speeds to your connection on my phone in my rural bit of Lincolnsire.

Somebody discovered you can inject power into the cable between the dish and the router as they appear to both use the PoE (Power over Ethernet) standard, which is DC and about 20 volts. Initially people were DIY'ing hacks that just cut the cable and spliced in a DC-DC convertor. These have now evolved into low volume 'products' that you can buy. It's unsupported by Starlink.

It's easier if you think of the Starlink as comprising of 3 bits of kit. 1. The dish, 2. Router, and 3. a 48V power supply for the dish.
Also, its not a dish, its not some passive component that just collects a signal (like your sat dish), its way more complex than that. Starlink call it a "Terminal" - think of it as the modem that connects , transmits and receives, to the starlink network. It needs power - at 48V. The Starlink router provides that power and passes it down the cable to the dish/terminal.

So, in order to convert your Starlink to run on 12v, you need to have a router that can run on 12v (or usb) like the GL.iNet products. If you're doing away with the Starlink router you need to still be able to provide 48V to the terminal/dish by injecting that power down the terminal cable, and you need a way of connecting the new bits together.
There are folks out there working on some products that make all this easier , such as boondocker.io

It uses roughly the same amount as a small fridge; plug it into the smallest inverter you can get the job done. Not sure I see a major benefit in converting it to native 12/24v. Go mad and get a decent inverter. You never know; you may also want to run something else off it.

I got three thousand watt converter but probably would be better to get one just to run that.
What size does it want?

100w inverter is plenty if just for that, it uses up to 80 w. but settles to half that
a slighty larger one wont hurt you though.

I've never had a problem I've got satellite dish and Netgear basically where ever I've been I always get one or the other. Been to Devon twice now and first time had two trees in the way so the satellite did'nt work and this week the netgear coul'nt get signal.

It's gaining ground with YouTubers posting sailing videos I have noted.
The 'marine' version is much more expensive than the RV version so many of them are adapting this version for marine use.

so it's 300 for the dish and 90 a month for the time you use it.
Can you fit it to the roof or do you have to build it up every time you use it.
