Funsters,

Anyone able to tell me what the maximum gross weight of the Mercedes based Alko tag axle chassis is please? Also need to know what the gross train weight is, i.e. with a trailer. I think I’ve seen somewhere that the maximum train weight is 5850kg but I don’t know where.

For comparison, the maximum train weight of the Fiat based Alko tag axle is 6500kg, and the maximum gross vehicle weight is 5500kg (or at least mine is).

My Fiat/Alko tag axle had a GVW of 5000Kg and a GTW of 5500Kg.

I think that it will be vehicle specific but, in any case, the data will be presented on your weight plate.

I currently have a Fiat tag axle plated at 5500kg gross and 6500 train.

I may be interested in buying a Mercedes based tag axle (haven’t found the right one as yet) and just interested to know how they’re plated, more specifically in relation to the train weight. I know they can be plated up to 5500kg gross but if the train weight is 5850kg that doesn’t leave much for a trailer any bigger than a wheelbarrow. Even if the motorhome only weighs 5000kgs it doesn’t leave enough even to tow a small car such as a Fiat 500

Hi G7, did you update yours?

I have a tag, Fiat, uprated from 5400 to 5700. I was told the max our Alko chassis could have as GTW was 6150.

Would be very interested in hearing how you got to 6500 as that would open up a wealth of opportunites

Fulham Dave I bought it as a used vehicle in December last year and it was plated at 5000kg gross vehicle weight and 6000kg train. That was on the Alko plate, although the original Fiat plate gives a maximum train of 6500kg.

I added VB semi-air to the rear axles and it was then uprated to 5500kg gross vehicle weight and 6500kg gross train weight. Axles are 2300kg front (it also has VB Comfort springs) and 1800kg each rear axle.

Some people say you can use any unused weight from the vehicle to tow a heavier trailer, as long as the gross train doesn’t exceed 6500kg. Whilst it seems to make some sense, I’m not certain about that and haven’t yet managed to find it written in a definitive source, i.e. the relevant construction and use regulations.

Can I ask which company you uprated it through?

I was advised that as it was Alko, it could not be increased to the original Fiat 6500 unless we could find a CoC from Dethleffs stating this figure. The max Dee at VWE said we could go was 6150 GTW

As the gross weight increases, the train weight decreases.....train weight is not a fixed weight
Some motorhomes, in fact some cars as well, have no train weight at all.

Provided the total combination does not exceed 6,500 kgs, the combination, van and trailer, will be legal.
The issues to manage would be axle weights and nose weight on the trailer and then the towing capacity of the tow bar. I.E. How
well it is engineered and bolted to the chassis (what it is rated at on its type approved plate)
