Vennbahn attempt number 2

For those that have followed the disused railway line thread and in particular the Vennbahn, will know we somehow managed to get lost on the final section from sankt vith to troisvierges.

We headed to sankt vith last night. A free stopover in a car park with loads of room. The 4 official places were full. The 3 unofficial places were taken so we created a 4th. To be fair there are at least another 50 spaces available.

We knew the first part of the route and where we thought we went wrong so as long as we went over the bridge we would be good.

We got there in double quick time as mainly downhill

Saw lovely haystacks and knew we were on the Vennbahn.

But then it went Pete tong.

This was the view over the bridge where we thought we went wrong, but it was earlier than that. We are now on the Eiffel ardennes radweg.

Only we don't know it yet.

Pleased with ourselves and our map reading skills a bat tunnel (mentioned on the Vennbahn trail info) confirmed (wrongly) we were doing well and only had to follow the signs (which we thought we were doing)

The path is straightforward (Eiffel ardennes) so no decisions to make so didn't bother checking ourselves with a drinks break

And we far too busy looking for beaver around their dam to check the map

Then came unusual flowers to occupy our minds

Then we arrived at Ponsfeld.
We had a decision to make and it was here we realised Paula's map reading skills weren't the best. I didn't get angry because we fancied a kebab in troisvierges. Paula tried blaming me.
So a quick look at the map ant troisvierges looked fairly close so head for Arzfeld and we will nearly be there.
Because we were expecting a dirty kebab we had emergency peanuts and peaches available. Arzfeld is a small village 15 Kms uphill and 33 Kms from troisvierges as we found out when we got there.

Lunch of aforementioned peanuts and peaches were enjoyed under a frosty environment as the only decision we could make was to return the way we came and find beer.

15 Kms back to Ponsfeld and I had located free electric so we could cycle in tour mode without worrying. The good news was it was right next a train cafe. I thought brownie points and I LL buy her a cake and a beer.

The bad news was it opens on Friday Saturday and Sunday. Today is a Tuesday.
So we sat round a table with iced tea whilst we abstracted electricity but we went for a walk and found a lavender maze and aire at pensfold at 7 euros which will see us another time as there are so many cycling routes to get lost on.

Also there is a weighbridge that goes up to 50,000 kgs, presumably for train carriages and not Morelos.
A stop saw us finally talking to each other as we saw butterflies

Then we came across a beer garden with free electric.

Charging in the background so we had 2 beers each

But concentration was required to determine where we had gone wrong and on the way back this is what we missed. It is the view you would see if you were heading to troisvierges.
Our turning is to the right and back upon yourself.
Fairly obvious if you read the sign rather than presume you are going straight ahead

Tune in tomorrow for Vennbahn to troisvierges act 3 with kebab. What could possibly go wrong ?
