Trier

We were fortunate to stay at Trier during the World Cup when Germany were playing really badly. There was a huge music festival and the town square had a mahoosive tv screen and the festival stopped whilst (from memory) Germany needed a point against Sweden to stay in the competition and were down to 10 men with a minute to go and Tony Kroos slammed one in from a stupid angle. The pace went mad and the party began. Several pop up wine and beer shops in the town and you just bought a bottle and got on with it. Somehow we managed to get back to the aire which was about 10 euros and outside the town on a vineyard but I remember really having to hunt down the owners to pay. Saw a wedding at the palace and I seem to remember something about it being a Roman town but to be fair I lost many memory cells that night. Really ought to go again.
