This is my interpretation of what I think I know.
The Fallas of Valencia is on March 19th with festivities going on from at least a week beforehand.
It is something to do with praying for a good harvest in the summer.
They make puppets out of burnable material and they go on display in the streets. Some of them are 30+ feet high and intricate.
Then on the 19th they burn them all at the sites they are located at within the town.
In the meantime every day at 1400 hrs at the main council square they set off fireworks.
We went today and got there at 1300 hrs we must have been 50 yards back. We went for a KFC and ended up 100 yards back only with 15 minutes standing and waiting. The spectators were at least 50 yards behind us.
It's not necessarily the fireworks to see as there is a lot of smoke but the noise. The ground vibrated. You couldn't shout and be heard when you were next to each other.
Our Aire is 14km cycle away so possibly 6 miles as the crow flies and they thought they were blowing mines up.
I have no idea what time to suggest getting there to get a decent view (not that it matters much) but 0900 ish would be where I would start. Don't bother with chairs.
Exiting is interesting. Roads are closed but full of foot passengers going in every direction. We dumped bikes by the bull ring and walked.
Each year 2 puppets (I think they are called Ninots) are saved from the fire and put into the museum. I think it started in 1934.
Each winning and runner upping saved nonet has an explanation and the theme seems to be social awareness.
If you are thinking of going soon DO NOT view the photos, just go. 2 euros each is unbelievably good value for about an hour's time.
I LL try to upload a video to YouTube and link it into here but have the sound on.!
