Bacharach has an aire right on the river and was not anywhere near full when we arrived and we actually stayed there 3 nights at 9 euros a night.
The town is peaceful enough with sufficient enough shops to keep you happy but we used it as a base for our motorbike to tour round locally.
One of the things we tried but failed to do was watch them "light up the Rhine" with a fireworks display which from memory goes on in the Summer holidays on a Saturday but you need to check this out. It occurs at Bingen just down the road but we failed to get in there.
We used the boats that cross you over the Rhine at 2 euros (memory) each crossing for the motorbike as bridges are few and far between.
Lorely on the other side of the river was one of the places we went to and parked up and climbed the stairs, and they were steep, to get to the top where we found a car park so wondered why we walked ! They also had a luge so we spent our money saved on fuel on the luge and finished off with ice cream and cake
