Since 1992
I bought 2 weeks ago a 21 year old Boxer Star Dream, with a back lounge, I love her, but now having a few teething problems, since I paid over my money sadly. (See my thread for advise).

I live in the beautiful town of Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk.

My Dream is to travel the UK in my Retirement for 1 year, then also with hopefully, with more confidence, than I do now, as a NEWBIE!

At present apart from the horrendous drive home from Somerset (another story on that drive haha), with "Dollie", yes I've personalised her, I am hoping, for some help, with heating Gas, Electric, Battery etc etc, it all sounds so complicated, for a professional woman, with her own business, but never been any good, with the practicals of vehicles.

Divorce has meant, that there is no man around, to do these things, the driving is a doddle, but everything else, is an absolute nightmare to me!

Im Worried, but also very excited about the forthcoming adventure, and have joined many clubs, as I have been told, are a very friendly Bunch.

So here goes ?

Regards Caroline
Welcome. We are also newbies on here, but old hands running campers and other vehicles of every stripe. I joined to swap stories as I’ve now not much to do as we live (full time) in the van for now, and to offer help and advise to others with their vans. Ours is also 20yrs old - you will find there is always something to adjust or fix, but you will quickly develop the required skills. Happy to help with any question :)

My advise is to get a Haynes Motorhome manual, probably 3rd Edition published in 2012 is about right. Unlike Haynes manuals for cars, it doesn’t tell you anything about the engine or running gear, but instead tells you about how things work inside the motorhome.
Plenty on Ebay
Next, look at the Rallies section on here. Get togethers where we socialise, chat about this and that and help one another out. The smaller ones are best and of course I will extend a welcome to you at the Easter Rally near Bath.

enough to know i shouldnt touch things i know nothing about ....
Remember that the more you spend time together, the more things you may decide she needs or wants. It's absolutely normal for things to 'go wrong' or need some sort of attention. Think if her as your little girl ..... She needs love and attention all though her life, new clothes from time to time and some girls can be quite high maintenance but the love they give back is incredible ....

Put together a list of things she needs and must have and a list of would like to haves, then prioritise each list and work your way through them. Take her out on a few trips and spend time together before rushing into buying her some designer accessories and expensive make up.

And don't be worried about asking for help with your parenting skills .... There are plenty of experienced parents on here willing to offer advice.

Most of all, enjoy your time together ....

Hi Caroline, :pink: to Fun.

As others have said very well above, ask any questions you have or you can use the search function to see if your questions have already been asked and this may save you some time.

A really good Fun rally and quite close to you is the Swaffham Bash, there will be plenty of people there who would be happy to look at any issues you have with your new Motorhome and help or give guidance. Plus it would be a good way to meet some funsters and make new friends https://www.motorhomefun.co.uk/forum/threads/swaffham-shindig-formally-the-thetford-bash.270330/

There is also a solo section in the Forums for single Motorhomers, there are lots out there.

Most of all, I am sure that you & Dollie will have lots of fun adventures together.

Welcome to the forum.
I spend my time 50% loving the fact I’ve finally got a motorhome and 50% worrying!
I read something on a thread on this site, only yesterday and it was basically saying “ we worry too much” sometimes I think that is true, since purchasing I’ve read about things I never knew existed.
Start local so you won’t be stranded and ease yourself into it.
Enjoy your new experience.

:pink: Just get out there and have a go, if there are things you need explaining before you start, just ask, there may be a few tongue in cheek responses though. For things like heating, water fridges, the instructions are mostly available as a pdf, google may become a friend.
good luck and hold onto your sense of humour, there are things you might despair about now, but will look back on with amusement.

Despite the banter here, there are plenty of Funster solo's. There is also a solo ladies group that like to be near each other on rallies, all of whom are perfectly self sufficient. What I am saying, is I may be a bloke, but you don't need a one of me.

The Swaffham rally is not far from you and a number of the solo's will be there. You will also find plenty of help from all-comers there, but it's not until May. You will find it in the rally calendar.

Plenty of other rallies around, and we will want to know if you not get a warm welcome whatever your van, your party size, your gender, race, etc. etc.

We are not far from you either. Near Wattisham airfield. There. Are a good few regulars in and around Bury St Edmunds, so you will not be far from someone if you get really stuck with something.

Welcome to the Fun.

Take all you need from home try not too spend too much or you will end up with loads on really usefull stuff you never use

One other point on your maiden voyage dont fill your water tanks then travel to you location with the drain valve open as you will not have any water when you get there ....................................guess how I know that

sweet caroline , Welcome!

As you live in Bury, can I second Holly's mum's recommendation to book up immediately to the Swaffham Bash while there are still spaces.
It's great Rally with a bargain menu of Food, Frolics, Fun & Advice! (You can even do some Moped racing!) and it's local. what more could anyone ask for?
