Ypres campsite tonight

Campsite is pretty busy and nearly all Brits 😊. There are a few Dutch, one German and spotted another Brit in disguise like us (British owned but french registered).

Menin gate ceremony tonight was sobering and dignified despite quite a crowd, they have been doing it since 1928. It was good to see so many young people there and placing wreaths, let’s hope that’s the nearest they ever get to such atrocities.

PS we had rain this afternoon 🥳. Never been so pleased to have some rain 🤩

If you get chance, drive to Tyne Cot, Sanctuary Woods, Hill 60 and Langemark - all interesting to visit and you can park up ok.

Thank you, we will be sure to do those. Were thinking of going to the Memorial Museum Passchendaele tomorrow, do you recommend ?

Try ‘Hooge crater near Ypres ,motorhome Aire attached ,museum /cafe with lots of artefacts made by the troops out of shell cases etc ,hotel next door has part of the German front line including concrete bunker in grounds (1€ honestly box)

Yes, you could do that in a circle to take in Tyne Cot, Langemark German cemetery and the Yorkshire Trench at Boezinge
 
Many thanks for all the suggestions, it was a memorable and moving experience. Here are a few photos from Sanctuary Wood of the trenches, with craters just feet away.
Also the cemetery there with so many gravestones of unknown soldiers, some commemorating two, three, four, even five and six poor souls.

Great restaurant and chocolate shops in the town square. Not to be missed.
 
We visited on the 100th anniversary, very poignant. We visited and saw where my grandfather was a machine gunner on hill 61. A prime target for the German snipers, he survived being shot in the head and lived to be the grand old age of 70.

Can’t remember the village name but it was in sight of Ypres and has a garden for each country who took part in WW1

Nice restaurant as well

We are going to Ypres in September. Could you give us a link or any information on the campsite please.
 
When we visited Tyne Cot a few years ago there were some English re-enactors in WW1 period uniforms visiting the cemeteries on horseback. I must admit, I thought I was seeing things at first

We stayed at the campsite, now called Urban Gardens, which is a short walk into the town. There is an aire as well but that is further out and we don’t have bikes.
The campsite was very good, loos with toilet paper soap and hand towels, hot showers, all very clean and tidy.
But they get booked up, especially in the school holidays i imagine. We booked for two nights a couple of days ahead, but when we tried to book a third night when we were due to leave they had no places.

The aire is at the end of Zonnbeke lake if you head out of Ypres to the roundabout with the tap on and turn right ( 3 o clock) to the next set of lights then turn left there. Go down that road past a petrol station on your right and at the railway crossing turn left its signposted towards Railway Dugout Cemetery and Hill 60 after about 500 yards you will see the Railway cemetery on your right and the entrance to the aire is on your left. There is water waste and electric but you need to arrive before mid afternoon to try and get a place, its now owned by the same people who took over the garden camping site in Ypres itself, its about a 20 min walk into the town
 
We overnighted at the Paschendale museum car park. There was the mother of all thunderstorms so got an unfortunate immersive experience
 
The Menin bar, right by the gate, used to be run by a lady called Beatrice and her son Leroy, I don't know if they're still there but they were lovely people and spoke great English, we used to pop in for a pint and a chat before and after the last post ceremony.

Apologies for not replying, I see someone has given directions. I had My son’s 30th birthday bbq today so was a tad busy. Enjoy your travels. ☺️
 
Campsite at Ypres is very good and very handy for the town - only downside is the 24/7 noise from the factory over the road

One of the reasons we prefer the aire by the lake.
