Your Beer of the week

I needed some tinned beers (due to weight) to take away in the van over Xmas & NY, so I bought a selection of Doom Bar, Specked Hen,and Abbots. they were OK, fav from tin was Doom Bar, but as you all know you cant beat a freshly pulled one in the pub.
Another discovery whilst staying in Bristol where they drink more cider than ale it would seem, was the newish Thatchers Lemon Cider, quite refreshing, but I quite like the cloudy Haze if having more than one.
I have never really been into cider, but it is a nice change especially if not too sweet.
Another mission will be to try the "cidres" in Brittany & Normandy.
Happy new year to all.

I too like the Thatcher's Gold and Cloudy, but not had the Lemon one yet.

In Chauvigny last night, I treated myself to a couple of these.

However, as lovely as it was @ €3.90 for less than a half pint, I didn't have any more. ☹️ Bl@@dy French. ☹️

Cheers,

Jock. ?

Ralph, I have never paid £7.00 for a pint, in any pub throughout my travels around the UK.................and I have no intentions of ever doing so. ;)
Doombar Reserve, which sadly hasn't been brewed at Christmas time over the last two years, was only £3.80 a pint, and that was 6.6%, the same volume as the Grimbergen winter ale.

Cheers,

Jock. :)

Today I looked back at my blog and was surprised by how much I used to write. I suppose it was the stroke that changed things and now all I wright about is the beers, the "and Me" bit has just disappeared from there altogether.

Reading through the older blogs for me it was much more enjoyable to read what was going on in my life as well as the drinks I had. So I think I will give it another go and see if I can wright about what is going on as well. I will alsos include the beers involved as well.

So this last weekend was the same plan as nearly every other weekend since I started all this, whether before the stroke in 2013 or even after the stroke.

Tin and bottled beers are not normally my thing as I hate fizzy drinks. However, have to say Speckled Hen out of a tin is very drinkable. Doom Bar is ok, but get fed up with the stuff living in Cornwall, much prefer Betty Stoggs from Skinners in Truro.

Anybody tried this beer from Corsica? It’s flavoured with chestnuts - different and delicious ?

I like all three of them
I do too, as I do most beers.

On the way down through Spain, I tried these two.

Whilst I wasn't overly keen on the Blonde, which has an almost clinical aroma and flavour to it, I was well impressed with the Ambre, which was different class altogether, and very enjoyable indeed. ?

What pleasantly surprised me Ralph, was that they were of French/Belgian origin and at 6% and 6.6% respectively, they only cost me €1.00 each. Whilst I would gladly have paid double that for them, if the Spanish can sell them at that price, why can't the French/Belgians? ?

Cheers :drink:

I do not think I have had them and as for the price, who knows

Hi Ralph, I have read some but not all of your past blogs and I am always impressed at how you describe the initial look of the beer when poured, the initial taste, and even the length...like a fine wine almost.
I try and do the same, I try and describe to myself what background flavours are there?, and try and decide whether they are fruity, spicy, bitter or dry.
Some are easier than others, especially on the bitter/sweet taste, however in most cases, Like most others I guess, I just know immediately if I like it or hate it, if its a likeable one, especially on draught, then I pass over the car keys to OH, and open a CC account behind the bar, smile and say cheers a few times.:drinks:
The nicest part of the whole experience is being in a different place, checking out if possible what the favourite local tipple is and going for that.
Being in places like Dublin was a foregone conclusion however, for them draught Guinness ,it's not a drink, its food!
Take care of yourself, I hope your heart is being regularly checked & monitored by a specialist.
Best wishes.

PS: I am still trying to work out whether Hop House 13 is a beer or a lager, I like the Hybrid concept though, (y)and the flavour.

I had a bottle of Brewdog Punk IPA last night. In my opinion what a fresh tasting beer. Strong flavour and reasonably strong alcohol content (5.6%). (y)

And some of the nicest food I've had in my time. ;) I just loved the Guinness over there last July. Black nectre. :drink:

I hate to think how much a pint they are charging these days in the place we went, many years back it was £5/6 Eu a Pint.
I dint even drink Guinness in those days, but it was well worth the wait for the first to be poured, as there was a que, quite a unique experience,as I thought at first we were being ignored by the barman, seeing many sat down get theirs before us:doh:

Can't remember much about it, as it was a stag do, but it was supposedly the oldest pub in Dublin, spend all day in there, had to nip across the road at one point, to get some real food in my stomach.
Happy Days:drinks:

TinaL, the prices varied quite a bit Les, ie, in a city centre pub in Limerick, I was paying €3.70 a pint,

IMG_20190710_133154.jpg

(sorry about the image quality :( )

but in Malahide, a small town outside Dublin, I was charged €5.35 a pint, and no, that wasn't a tourist price as I was quick to observe, but it was the dearest Guinness throughout the whole of three week trip, including the North  ...................................and to make matters worse................................I had four of the bu@@ers.

Cheers.

Jock. :drink:

Most places charged around €3.50

Hi JockandRita ,its a funny old world Malahide was the town of my OH cousin that we stayed in when we went over to Dublin for the Stag do.
I remember the nice harbour with the new apartments that seemed newly completed, and their house was the same as shape as ours, but slightly different internal layout.
Expensive place in all aspects, but we didn't go to a local pub, just Dublin city.
There was also a Chinese restaurant that we all piled into in Dublin, the first thing the young Chinese waitress announced was "we have a fully stocked bar" as she handed out the menus.
Initially every drink that our crowd asked for, she refused saying sorry we dont have, we only have Tiger Beer :giggle:
Cheers

That must be the only licensed premises in Dublin City..........................................that doesn't sell Guinness.

Cheers :drink:

Went to the bar in a Weatherspoons in Preston and had a pint of Ruddles……....£1.49! Couldn't believe it. Kept telling the barmaid she hadn't charged enough but apparently they've knocked the price down on several beers to celebrate the uk's independence from Europe. Yesterday discovered the delights of Shropshire Gold.

Boat Lane Beers, I bought these six bottles last year, around the end of August in Bretforton, I had two of the beers a week later in Tenby, Wales but the others I only had the other night, so let's get on with the review.

well the beer looks good
