For what ever reason........ Health/Financial/Bored/Looking for another hobby...

What will/would you miss most.. ????????
.............................................................................................................................................................

I certainly did not want to pack it in and did give it another try when we moved back down to Weymouth, with a lovely PVC... but my body had other idea`s... :frowny:

I miss getting away from bloody bricks and mortar...... Friends..... Rally`s..... and generally going where I want and when I want..:nod:

What about others ????

We sold ours in December after thinking about it for a while and having hardly used it for 4 years due to various circumstances.
Over the years our usage changed, people we met when camping changed and we changed.
In the end the cumulative effect was that it was more trouble to have it stood on the drive with more time/money spent on cleaning it and other maintenance tasks than using it in the way we used to enjoy doing.

No long term alternative yet because of the continuation of various circumstances but we will get there.

old-mo it is nice to have you posting again'

I am sorry that you feel you have to pack it in. Have you sold the PVC?

We are just start the second episode of our motorhoming: for the last 12 years we have been confined to 4-5 week trips not to leave Basia's Mother for too long, but now that Mother has left us we have two 6-8 week trips planned, first to Germany/France in May/June and in Sept/Oct to Greece.

What would we miss?

1. Now like you said, it is the ability to go where we want, when we want.

2. Freedom from making reservations and airports, because even car travel implies reservations for accommodation.

3. Since giving up the sailing boat it is my continuation in my 'land-yacht' to go to some of my sea haunts which are not possible to stay at without ones own accommodation.

4. It is our own B&B if we have extra guests for the house bedrooms.

5. Finally, but specific to us, if Mr. Putin and his thugs decided to come 'visiting' to Poland, we would just throw our clothes and personal effects into the MH and head West, since neither us have any assets in Poland, all in UK. When the Poles(+NATO) had busted his a*se we could just drive back.

What wonderful value for £27K spent 14 years ago! ::bigsmile:

I would miss the weekends wildcamping on my own, 2 days of me-time. No matter what and where, just to get out of the house.

Oh, but I miss that already. Sold the PVC over two years ago and the new one doesn't seem to come.

I am sorry that you feel you have to pack it in. Have you sold the PVC?

Yes... unfortunately.... Not sold so much as gave it away to a Funster..

Last trip to Devon with Dorset Diver nearly killed me..

I think it was his last trip away before selling up.. and calling it a day... :frowny:

Suppose it happens to all of us in the end... :crying1::crying1:

How about ...............You old feller?... Try and keep your head up and fill us with laughter all the time.

That aside I want to be set alight and sent over the cliff with mine when my wings are required and Jesus needs me for a cherub. A viking burial in my truck!

Seriously though.........I will always miss it! It took me a long time to achieve my dream of owning one. That ...I will always treasure!

Kev....... PS..Sorry if its taken it a different route. Just want to keep mine forever! :drinks:

What would we miss?

The freedom to roam.

Getting lost in strange places.

Coming across unexpected finds while travelling.

Seeing other cultures at close quarters.

Meeting different people.

Deciding, “let’s set off tomorrow”.

Like GJH ours was sitting about too much of the time and only really got used in the spring and autumn months. Summers were kept free for the car trip to the Faroes and by the time we got home there was catching up to do. We had a good trip to Scotland in September 21 and a couple of local trips in 22 but the last lengthy trip was Norway in 2018. Sold this year and now other things are on the agenda. Just booked a Fjords cruise for early May and later plan to do a ShiftZZ type trip to Thailand and probably the Golden Triangle and Shimla. I'll miss it for Norway again and occasionally do the online rounds of the dealers but so far avoided the temptation.

old-mo Maurice as you know Eddie and I sold our much loved Hymer which we had for the past 18 years but like you there comes a time when common sense and the fact that Ed's not allowed to drive at the minute and my wonky knee just stopped us doing it how we always have.
To be honest I've got myself a little greenhouse altering a few things round the place and exploring our local area more, , after a life time of having Tents Caravans and Motorhomes it is very different but surprisingly got our selves in the right frame of mind to enjoy what we can do and be very happy to look back at all the places/country's we have visited the friends we have made and think we were very lucky, now bring on our next adventure, I'm sure as heck going to keep enjoying what things turn up next.

Big fat "Woopsy" :blusher::blusher::blusher::blusher::blusher:

I mentioned Dorset Diver in my first post...

Looking through some old photo`s, it was Stoke Gabriel in Devon.

And it was NOT Dorset Diver we were with:doh:

It was DiggerJon .......

My apologies to Dorset Diver.... And Diggerjon...

Apologies gratefully accepted and lovely to hear from you and fine memories of that lovely site and your splendid company. I too have now joined the former owner's club as I too reluctantly gave up motor homing in November last year having sold my MH through the classified ads on this forum. I was going to miss it badly this year anyway, but yesterday the untouchables at the DVLA informed me that I was no longer allowed to drive until I could provide proof that my medical issues were under control. You sure get used to having a licence after 55 years with no points on it and suddenly you're grounded and have to prove you're innocent! Round one starts on Monday at the doctor's (if the taxi arrives on time...).

Getting older is something that creeps up on us. We have travelled in many ways for many years, having given up the MoHo we still have a caravan but haven't been abroad for a few years, ill health and caring duties have kept us local until this year but we're still not going abroad and I'm not sure we will ever leave the country again. When the time comes that the caravan has to go I'm not sure what we will do, there are hotels that have facilities for less able people so we may try that.

Good luck with whatever you try old-mo

Giving up the Motorhome was the hardest ( but most logical) thing we have had to do in quite some time.

A health diagnosis that was only going to get worse, combined with the pressure of all the driving and heavy lifting would firmly fall in Yvonne’s lap ( we are both in our 70’s) basically decided things for us.

What we will miss most, besides just going away so often, is our twice annually trip down to Vaison La Romain where twice a year we spent a month cycling around the Provençal countryside!
It was the freedom the Motorhome gave you (as well as being relatively inexpensive) that was part of the appeal. No dressing up but relaxing with like minded people from across Europe.

We now sit in the conservatory thinking “we would be on the road to France in two weeks” but then reality kicks as there is no way we could manage it now, but what brilliant memories we have!

A combination of events finished it for us. Brexit wrecked our retirement plans of spending 6 months of the year MHing in Europe in our beautiful RMB with summers back here plus the increase in medical insurances again courtesy of loss of the EHIC back up. I wont go into the politics here but I hope there is a special hell reserved for those who screwed up a lifetime of working and planning! Then the pandemic meant RH sat on our drive eating funds for nearly two years so in the end an opportune offer came up and we very sadly waved goodbye. Missing the ability and flexibility to stay and get to know places all over Europe rather than a touristy week here or there which is just not the same thing.

We too have sold our Dethleffs (well deposit taken). We too would normally be off this week. 😟🥲. Not sure what we will do, we keep being asked.

I too come from Weymouth @oldmo so we will definitely miss our annual trip down there.

Duncan is building another railway layout some 14ft long so he’s catered for. Not sure what I will do. Definitely not gardening.

My posts aren’t posting due to a disagreement with Northernraider his groupies and Jim but so sad to see all these posts…life I suppose… I for one will keep going until the end even if I can’t get life insurance or correct license. Long time to go yet I hope…only 63 although feel 23 😊

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

I've been taking on the DVLA for over 2 years now trying to get my licence reinstated. Nothing happens with any speed with them and quite often without much logic either. It's the daft little things I miss, like when I'm doing a bit of DIY and I'm short of something. I can't just jump in the car and nip down to the local store, I have to hope my wife's not doing anything and ask her for a lift. The one thing that I am fortunate with is that she has taken up the baton and is driving the motorhome so all is not lost. I wish you luck with your appeal.

Thanks for the tidings of doom! Living on my own rather compounds the problem as there is no reserve driver apart from taxi drivers! Let's see what happens!

I am struggling a bit at age 76 on my own. I love driving it but all the loading, up and down the steep steps, takes it out of my athritic hips. Plus continuing to look after it all the time. But I love my home from home and so will continue for now but I know the writing is on the wall.

We cut out some of the loading by having nearly everything duplicated in the house and on board. Of course bedding and clothes have to come out to be washed but little else.

Maybe we are fortunate to have a well-insulated MH which does not need cushions and duvets removing and no damp consequences.

Once one has got past the expense of duplicating all kitchen stuff, toiletries and cleaning materials the duplicate items in the house and MH just last longer so not need replacing so often.

So our loading is the laundered items plus food and booze but the latter is stocked up direct from the car into the MH garage in the weeks before departure.

I am 81 BTW, although OH is a decade and a half younger, but the driving is down to me.

I wouldn't be around for long to miss it if we sold ours as our three little monsters would have savaged me for getting shot of their kennel on wheels! 😳

EHIC isnt an issue for me, I have its replacement the GHIC, not that I ever relied on it. IMO Going to Europe without medical insurance and relying on the EHIC would be irresponsible, decent medical insurance is an essential, so the demise of the EHIC means nothing to me.

The 90/180 isnt an problem for me either, three months away has always been more than enough. But I’ll admit this has been a nightmare for some, especially those with winter homes abroad.

I hope your making the best of your retirement in spite of these issues. Meanwhile, for the way I voted, while not a believer in either heaven or hell, from what I’ve read, Hell seems much more fun.

Yes, I have always had duplicates for everything. There will be a lot of things going to charity shops when I do give up.

The EHIC, now the GHIC, still exists so why imply it doesn't? 🤔

I have my Senior Railcard and Bus pass. So days out - or even longer - in various directions are there to be had.
Not the same i know but if you maybe have a static caravan at your favourite location, that could be an option.
