YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSsssssss ... at last!!!!

As we've got the Fiat Maxi Heavy chassis, which as standard can go up to 4250kg without any mods, that's what we asked the dealer to see if he could register it at that and he did, if not we'd have just uprated again like last time (via John Ruffles) and done it afterwards.

I'm awaiting delivery of a PVC on the Maxi chassis that's plated at 3500kg MAM. Is there any extra charge for the dealer to register it with a higher MAM? Do you need to have new plates with new weight on them?

Like you I was going to go the John Ruffles route when I took delivery of the van, but it seems much simpler to do it on initial registration. Thanks.

I don't like stuff just being 'stuck' somewhere so that when you try to find it it means turfing loads of other bits out to get at it, so prefer to have 'homes' for specific items that I use most. I've got a few more things to sort yet so watch this space!

It depends which chassis its built on as a lot of MHs are built on the Fiat Maxi Light chassis and that's why they tend to be limited to 3850kg without mods, although they may be able to go higher if they do some mods such as changing tyres, adding air assisted suspensions etc.

We could possibly have gone for 4500kg as that's the maximum of the axles (2100kg and 2400kg) but would probably have had to have supporting paperwork, so 4250kg was sufficient for us - having had our previous Globecar uprated from 3500kg to 4250kg after we'd bought it we knew it was just a paper exercise with no mods needed.

So in a nutshell ... you need to know which version of the chassis you have to work out the maximum it can go to ...
Just goes to prove that there aint no substitute for experience eh?having the options of having a Fiat Light or Fiat Heavy chassis were never revealed to us byany dealer though the ability to drive a LIGHT chassis without a C1 License was obvious.(I have a C1)
The payload figures quoted on most of the 3500KG,s vans are grossly exaggerated, hence requirement for weigh bridge certificate.
We are currently at 3650KG,s but need a bit more to be comfortable having fitted all the usual toys, SV tech were consulted and it was confirmed that we have the correct wheel size and tyres to go to 3850KG,s, but they did recommend air assist suspension to get us there.
Might be worth a call to John Ruffles see what he has to say about max upgrade figures with or without air assist.
Well we live & Learn dont we.
Thanks Minxy Girl

Defo get your dealer to do it on first registration, so much simpler and cheaper than doing yourself afterwards, as we are now finding out.:( yes you will need new weight plates to replace existing 3500KG one, our dealer provided the first one to 3650KG,s, now need another thats where John Ruffles comes in handy also.

No charge to have it registered at the higher weight as it costs £55 for first registration plus whatever the road tax is, that's it, but obviously the dealer has to be wiling to do it. You've reminded me that I need to do a new plate, but that's not difficult, I can simply do one myself on paper and then laminate it and stick it on, although you can buy them if you want a metal one but then you have to 'stamp/etch' your details onto it so is more pratty.

I'll have to check with the dealer but I can't see any reason why they wouldn't be willing to do it.

The VIN plates don't need to be anything official then, seems quite straightforward and easy. Thanks for that info.
