Got my ‘Motorhoming in France‘ news letter this morning and this was one article-

WORST DRIVERS IN EUROPE?
Vinci Autoroutes Foundation in France has published the results of its 13th "Survey of Responsible Driving", a study carried out by Ipsos in 11 European countries which looks at the behaviour and safety of Europeans at the wheel.

To carry out the survey, Ipsos questioned via the Internet, 12,400 people aged 16 and over, including 2,400 French people and at least 1,000 people in each of the 10 other countries surveyed (Germany, Belgium, Spain, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, United Kingdom, Slovakia, Sweden). The 2023 edition of this study shows that the French are increasingly bad drivers, often surpassing the European average in dangerous behaviour on the road. In fact, good driving practices are less and less respected, and many prohibited uses are practised on a daily basis by French motorists.

For example, 74% of French drivers use their phone while driving, 49% set their GPS while driving, 30% send and read text messages or e-mails, and 8% even watch movies or videos on their smartphone. Finally, 83% admit that they sometimes take their eyes off the road for more than 2 seconds, which is equivalent, at 130 km/h, to travelling at least 72 metres “blind”. In addition, certain dangerous behaviours are always adopted on the road: 9% of French drivers admit driving under the influence of alcohol, and 4% having taken drugs. In addition, 13% of drivers say that they sometimes do not fasten their seat belt, 68% do not respect the safety distances, 49% drive in the middle lane when the right lane is free, and almost 9 motorists out of 10 (89%) exceed the speed limit by a few km/h The study reveals an even more worrying fact, since in recent years there has been a real upsurge in bad manners at the wheel. However, drivers do not seem to be aware of adopting a bad habit: 97% cite at least one positive adjective to describe their own behaviour (vigilant, calm, courteous, etc.), and yet 85% of drivers cite at least one adjective negative to describe the behaviour of others (aggressive, stressed, dangerous, etc.).

In fact, 89% of drivers say they fear the aggressiveness of others behind the wheel, which corresponds to a 10 year record high –but in the rest of Europe, this rate is 84%. And most incivilities are more common in France: 68% of French people admit to insulting other drivers (compared to 52% in Europe), 59% of French people honk their horns at other road users who annoy them (vs. 50%), and 35% deliberately drive too close to vehicles that irritate them (vs. 32%).

After a few weeks in France, touring, I agree with the news letter but I think some of the % are a bit off!
When we House sat, for several winters, there was a ‘restaurant’ nearby, we went there a few times, midday, you could have a carafe (big one) of red wine or same of Cider or both!
It was always full of lorry drivers and everyone drove there, staggered out afterwards and carried on!
We walked to it, with the dog.

still find Birmingham and London the worst places for driving standards
Birmingham is awful!!!

Inept or just aggressive and non caring.

I just accept it, slow right down and let them kill themselves, it used to wind me up. I let them get in with it wherever now.

Worst place I have ever seen was Indonesia, it has to be seen to be believed.

French lane discipline on motorways is far better than us Brits but off the motorway they are a liability. Driving up your arse, overtaking on brow of hills, and bends, can't keep to their own side of the road on bends. Worst of all cutting across from left lane on roundabouts right across your bow to get to the exit.

Coming back from Spain directly you get across the border into France you notice the driving standards drop.

As for Italy just close your eyes and pray.

India is interesting, going around roundabouts the wrong way, taking slip road onto a dual carriage way the wrong way because it saves 50 yds. And if you have seen the Top Gear when they went from Japhour to Delhi that was was quite calm compaired to when we did it.

If you cycle on the roads the British are easily the worst.
We cycled Paris last year for a laugh.
I am writing this to prove we survived !
In general I would agree with you, but Paris was interesting, especially with their cycle lanes and their delivery drivers on bikes using them adding extra hazards.
The marble floor and rain (and inept cycling on them) was the nail in the coffin and my rotator cuff has still not fully recovered but I have full movement now (8 months)

In France cycling is a national sport, if you dont ride competitively or ride for leasure, you at least watch it on tv, so I think this has created a respect from french drivers to cyclists.

It is just a pity it isn't the same in reverse, the attitude can be, why shouldn't there be a pack of ten bunched up riding two abreast on a windy 5km strech of road with no opertunity to pass.

Why didn’t they include Portugal?

It´s all par for the course these days, but what about pedestrians? the standard of awareness from pedestrians has dropped through the floor and the don`t give a shit attitude has gone through the roof.
Stepping into the road and not looking, walking behind reversing cars, etc and just not being aware of motor vehicles in general, but then we have only had them for a 100yrs or so.......

As an aside, I have driven in Cairo, now that´s an experience not to be missed....

I was going to say Cairo also, followed by the midlands in general, in the midlands if you dare find yourself in the wrong lane and signal to change, you will get a lot of abuse.
I've not driven in Cairo but taken plenty of taxis. It's particularly interesting how 6 lanes of traffic can fit into 3 lanes of road. I'm also convinced their vehicles only go forwards if the horn is pressed. I once saw a family of 4 on a moped.

Would heartily agree about driving in Cairo. But Kazakhstan comes really close, with two lanes at a traffic lights occupied by 4 cars , outermost car gambling on being able to out drag the other cars before it hits the car doing the same on the opposite side of the road.

How do you know they're not just after an insurance payout?

And what about the Greeks? My experience of driving in mainland Greece was a while ago but I have never seen more suicidal overtaking in any other country.

As for France, there is a lot of aggressive driving behaviour on the back roads. I suspect that they regard following a British car or MH as an insult to their manhood so they tailgate impatiently, and then overtake dangerously as soon as possible.

Day before yesterday I followed a Renault clip out of the marina we were in at the junction the sign showed right turn only she waited maybe 30 seconds till the coast was clear went straight over the central reservation and turned left

Both car and camper are french registered, the camper is LHD so nothing to do with whether you are english or not.
It is obligatory to sit about 50 meters behind you on the straight then tailgate you while it is still just about possible to overtake, then overtake as you get closer to the blind bend.

The one thing I can never understand about french drivers is why they will follow you for miles of straight road with plenty of opportunities to overtake but they always wait till you are on a blind bend or similar obstruction.
