I’ve an outdoor light above the habitation door on my Hymer that I keep leaving on. So I thought I’d fit an LED to the switch that lit up when the light was on. Except I don’t know how to do that - could someone help?

The warning light will be wired from the switch (same contact that goes to the light...will only be live when the switch is on.....the other wire on the switch will always be live) and neutral (van chassis) the other way is to swop the switch for one that has a built in light (it will have the same 2 wires as the original and a negative...van chassis.

If you can't find the switch you are looking for, you could think along the lines of one of these.....

Fit on the inside of the MH as near as you can to the Awning light, thread the cables through and attach to positive and earth of the light fitting.

Trace the two wires at the porch light.
One will be positive, switched on and off from the light switch, the other is negative.
Wire the led between the pos and neg wires AFTER the switch (between switch and light)
If the led doesn't light try swapping the two wires around.... The led may be polarised, meaning it only works on way round.

One of my previous vans I fitted a 2mm LED in the switch, you need a resistor in series to limit the current to the LED a 1.2k resistor will limit the current to 10ma which is about right for most standard LED's. Hardest part of the job was finding a neutral connection.

We used to have the same issue when letting the dog out for her last toilet, I now leave the habitation door blind down a crack, the wife then tells me I’ve left the light on, so I have more of an audible warning than a visual one 😁

Thanks, I can find a neutral and I have a resistor so I'll give that a go.

Snap! That's exactly the scenario that leads to the light being left on. But no window in the habitation door unfortunately.

As Lenny HB says, a standard LED requires about 3V, so you need a resistor in series with it to drop the voltage from 12V to 3V. However for those that don't want to faff about with a soldering iron, you can get an LED with a resistor prewired into its leads. Lots of options, google '12V LED indicator'.

Show me the switch?
Here’s the setup. I'd rather work with what I have than try another switch.

Only problem with those is size, I used a 2mm LED and mounted it in the centre of the switch, may not be possible depends on the switch.

I'd like to fit the LED in the bezel if I can. Not much room there though and it's going to need a neat hole to look OK as the LED I have will push in from the back and any imperfections will show. Unless I can find a small LED that I can fit from the front.

I fitted a small led to my Hymer awning light for the same reason, drilled a small hole in control panel and glued a led in wired into awning light wire.
