Hi can I simple cut into the light wires and come off them to a usb socket near my bed ?
is there any reason why not

I’ve no idea, but I do know that you can get lights with usb sockets built in them, which might perhaps simply the wiring? Just a thought.

Does the wiring not have to be thicker than lighting wire? Especially if led lights are fitted.

A simple USB charger will not be an issue. Some do have bright lights so watch out if it is in your bed. I wouldn't bother me but I know it does some.

Yes you can, that's how I put 12v sockets into our previous campers, to be safe just make sure that you don't have all the lights on and try to charge something at the same time although saying that with LED lights nowadays it would be less likely! I used a 12v socket in a surface mount and also ones without the surface mount too.

One thing I never do is charge anything overnight ... ever ... there are risks involved when charging and I'd rather be awake and able to deal with it if needs be than fast asleep. Some people have used some sockets off Ebay which have developed faults so it's not a myth.

Yes some are really poor quality and I avoided them for years, recently though I found some that seemed good quality aluminium cased and QC3 compatible. I bought one and tested it for interference and how warm it got charging a tablet, it was good. I'll get a link.

Yes no problem, just make sure it doesn't go dead with the light switch 👍
So the wireing system will go dead when switch is off so I have to charge when lights on I guess I may have lights with switch so could turn off from each one

No, you just cut into the live wire leading to the light, the light being on/off won't make any difference unless you inadvertently use the negative wire - you need to check which is the live and negative wires so you know which is which.

I thought about doing the same thing for probably the same reason. Even looked at replacing the 12 v led down lighters with ones with 2amp usb sockets in them. Nice ones were quite pricey, £20 - £30. In the end bought a couple of power banks for much less nthey charge everything teckie, even powers the Chromecast in the telly, plus we can take with us when out for the day. Highly recommend considering them before dismissing.

I am however fitting a 10 amp cigar socket to the bulkhead where the PSU 2007 is located to run the 12v telly. Just need to locate the common earth and run a piggy back fuse off a 10 amp fuse that has capacty. The cigar socket should also take a usb adaptor.

Hope this helps

Presently away in the moho one of the double usb sockets failed first night out the earlier type with the piercing blue led, replaced it with the newer generation type incorporating a digital voltage display I chose red it’s very subdued at night and the two 2.1 amp outlets are good, charging a Samsung S8 phone and an IPad no heating issues or electronic interference that I have found. Well pleased.
