Am doing first winter tour mid Jan hoping to pick up some skiing along the way. Dethleffs coachbuild on a Fiat base. Have the ubiquitous silver screen for the windscreen but was wondering if am going to experience cold spots in the cab, and are the thermal skirts/aprons worth investing in? Any experienced views and tips on this subject welcome!
 
This helps with the cold dash area. It’s carpet used like a curtain

Thanks for that, neat job👍. Looks like I'll have to remove the clear plastic just behind the door card & glued onto the door itself; maybe that was put there by a previous owner (there's been a few since 2003!).
The plastic is to prevent water ingress.

water runs down the glass to the inside of the door and then runs out of vents on the bottom of the doors.

with out vents water has nowhere to go.
the plastic holds back the damp . And condensation between the cold outside air and the warm heated air.

I use press studs sorry the picture is poor I’ll do another but it does work,garmisch at Christmas,as well as silver foil underlay,this has worked over 20 years.

We have a rear lounge, our cab area is mainly used for storage when parked. In winter we completely isolate th cab area, currently using a small quilt. The vehicle cab is made of cold steel and glass, the living area is fully insulated and double glased, the temp difference has been as much as 15deg c when isolated. Van warms more quickly and stays warmer for longer. No condensation either in the cab area.

I turn the ventilation system to recirculate and use a small oil filled radiator in the cab......toasty!

Yes I have replaced those vents underneath the last van ( autotrail imala) made little difference ( did stop some coming through the seat belt opening) but still got draughts around the bottom of the dash/cup holders .
Done the same on my Autotrail Apache with the same result , but every little bit helps , you can buy the part direct from Fiat spares or online in many auto parts suppliers , can’t remember the part number though but I think I googled it any way , maybe do the same if you are going to do the modification.

One thing I was told years ago was at night to turn the cab air circulation to recycle and turn all the air vents off
Also internal cab curtains help along with an external silver screen that covers the bonnet air vents

And I'm pretty sure 'klumpf' would be a German word too.
I'm sure that chap in 'Allo 'Allo used to say that rather than 'HH' when giving the Gestapo etc the Nazi salute ....

1355707080, we've also just put an extendable shower pole across the upper locker area and have a blanket down behind the seats, made a lot of difference in keeping the drafts out of the habitation area. May go the full curtain rail mode if I feel like drilling holes but the blanket seems to work.

Swapped them over yesterday, our Ducato cab has 4 of the vents, two on each side. The drivers side vents were already blank plated, I assume as the exhaust is under them. I replaced the two on the passenger side. Does it make any difference to the cold air around the cab floor? No, not really. :rollingeyes:

No it doesn’t, agree , but every thing to eliminate the drafts helps I think …. 😲

I think sections of reasonably thick carpet or foam in the under-bench lockers may be next. The offside under-bench storage area really gets very cold and the cold air seeps out of the frame. So far the shower curtain pole across the cab and a thick thrown to close off the cab has been really the only way to keep the cab cold out.
