Winter break in Spain Jan - Mar next year?

One more question please

I have plotted two routes from Santander to Alicante. One almost straight down and one heading for the coast and then down.

Does either give any issues with needing chains or snow tyres please. Jan/Feb time.

Thanks

The road from Burgos to Madrid usually has snow at that time. Far better to go the shorter low level route via Zaragoza. Never had to use chains as the Spanish kép the roads clear very well.

Think we will drive down through France immediately after Christmas to Spain. Would still like to go to Morocco but the earthquake has put SWMBO off for now.

Would like a recommendation for a site or sites in Southern Spain, nice pitches, good restaurants close by, not too busy and decent local transport (don't want much!! :giggle:)

Anyone got some thoughts?

This is everything you need and more, not cheap and you would need to get booked quickly.

Personally I prefer the Zaragoza route. As far as snow the Police shut the motorways and have big holding areas with hotels etc. They let vehicles out when the roads are passable. From the port you climb quite quickly to the high plains. You can feel the temperature drop quite quickly. The snow can come quite quickly so carry some provisions.

The one in the left is for sure, mor risky in that matter.
Anyway, I wouldn't worry too much, check AEMET when about travelling to be in the safer side.
Cheers

Given the reviews of La Manga we are thinking of doing the other CMC rally at Vilanova Park for the second part of the trip. Anyone here done that rally?

We realise it may be a bit cooler than La Manga but still warmer and sunnier than the UK?

So:
UK to Allania
Allania to Vilanova
10 days or so to kill before ferry home.

La manga has two sides, one for long stayer’s/residents and one for tourers, I found it perfectly acceptable where I was and the area was great, site was clean and facilities very good I thought..

It was just like any other site where they have long standing clients and locals with there statics, ..🙂

The reviews are very polarising. A bit of a Marmite site it seems.

We wintered in Spain regularly in pre-MH days and I would suggest avoid driving near Madrid whenever possible.

We used to stay for 6 months at La Manga and did so for several years and had a great time on the Camping Club rallies. The shanty town side is home to many Brits who used to do the 6 months then decided to live there full time.

Wonder if that works on a CMC rally booking? I'll ask them.

Cheers
Not sure how it works but in 2019 we could book on the rally at Alannia Marjal at Catral 2 weeks previous to the date required if not you can ask for a pitch close to the rally and save yourself some wonga 👍🏻

I've posted a few times about Camping Las Plameras, at Crevillent - slightly inland and just south of Alicante. Not far from the A7 & AP7 motorways. It's virtually right in town but quite an oasis. Also features in the ACSI discount scheme. In the same ownership and shares the same good facilities with a local hotel. The bar and restaurant are popular with locals. Nearest supermarket a couple of hundred yards and there's a Lidl on the other side of town. We first found the site by accident and intended a one night stopover, but stayed longer and have returned multiple times. There's a handy service bay where you can wash your van if you want - no extra charge, just have your own cleaning stuff. Might not be everybody's cup of tea but it works for us. All pics taken during mid-winter. :giggle:

Might well see you there. Can’t decide, La Manga or Villanova for our second stay.
When we stayed at Vilanova there was a sawmill just down the hill which started work at 7.30am some days. Might not be there now. The restaurant and shop are both good . However the site is in a country park some way out of town, ok for caravanners with a car. There's a bus service from the gate, not the best site for a rally imo.

The plan is now booked. It can change.

Allania for a couple of weeks. La Manga for another two weeks then Vilanova for two.

La Manga is sold out on the rally but they are checking for pitches for us. If not we may extend the other two.

As for getting from Sntander to Alicante area the attached is what our satnav says. Question is, As there appears to be some motorway tolls what is the best way to deal with those? Just pay on the booths or use a tag? We are under 3500kg.
There is a shorter route cutting off that dogleg to the right but I don't know about any possible snow issues.

Also, which is the best app for some sites to stay at on the journey down an back? Pitchup does not have many. Camper Contact etc

Thanks again all.

We thought the tolls travelling across Spain were excellent value. Certainly much cheaper than France. As I recall, we paid the same price as a car for our sub-3,500 kg van. Excellent road surface and almost deserted for much of the journey. We've always routed more directly via Madrid.👍

We have gone for the last four years Jan to April staying at Manilva, not had bad weather yet. Full time shorts weather sun goes down around 5pm We go various routes but prefer Santander. We stay at La Bella Vista a lovely site right on the beach.
