Ive got a few friends in the wine business and I'm lucky to get to a few tasting events. I'm not an expert but like a good bottle of red or the occasional white/rose. I'm trying not to be pretentious and would prefer to stay within low to medium budget (Lidl and Aldi mainly). Travelling in the motorhome I come across some good wines so thought I'd add them to my blog to see what others think. Here's the link..

We visited Ribero del Duero a few years ago good wines. We do a wine tasting for the local U3a funnily enough it's tonight. We're doing wine/ food pairings. Nothing poncy aimed at people who want to know a bit about wine but not swank off about how much they've spent!

Great Idea, I enjoy reading the blogs I find on Fun. The wine reviews would be a good reason to revisit. Do you have a link to the beginning of your blog please.

The blog has been going for over 10 yrs. Its quite detailed and boring at times despite my attempts to try to make it interesting. Its a bit upside down with most pages starting at the bottom and moving upwards. On the rt hand side are the dates of entries and places viisted.
I appreciate your interest

Not exactly off topic but, for those heading down to Spain, have a try at this one.
I've found it in little shops but Mercadona has it every time.
When I last bought some this year it was 1.90 euro for a 1 litre bottle.

The OP mentioned Lidl and Aldi. I can only speak of Lidl, and in Poland, but I have had experience over several years that when we find a wine there that we like it lasts for a few weeks or months and then disappears, so that we have to switch to another wine, then for the same thing to happen again.

Also the wines they substitute seem to be going down in quality.

Do others experience the same in other countries?

While we are travelling thro' France ( especially N.W. ) there are chain of shops called 'NOZ' (you can pick up the stores on their website) its basically an end of line chain, but, some of the wine they sell is so good and cheap ( not all) you will often see the locals buy 2/3 separate bottles, out to the car park and have a taste..... the ones they like...... back in and but a box !!!

I have no problem with Lidl or Aldi wines. I personally prefer Lidl and genuinely believe the quality is improving. The UK stores have weekend wine offers. A chianti reserva dropped to £4.40 and they were selling 6 bottles of a good Italian white for £20. All my wine sales mates took advantage of these.

When in the MH we have often done CP tasting, especially when we did not recognise the particular wines on offer. Some went into the cooking store!

I'm not sure we get these same offers in Wales, I've certainly not seen a 6 for £20 offer on any wine, I think there is now a legal minimum price for alcoholic drinks, another excellent idea from our devolved government 😠

I think that's the same chianti reserva that we tried and went back and bought a load.

Yes it's a good value wine. In Italy last year. Lidl dropped the price. Worked out £2 a bottle. Like you loaded up.

I prefer the Wine by the Gallon approach.
E. Leclerc Supermarkets

When we started going to France in the 70s a lot of supermarkets had vats of wine where you filled your own bottles. Decent drinkable plonk. Wondered when they might return but not seen then in Leclerc

Mercadona: 'The Guvnor' at €2.49!
Meanwhile, back in Blighty…

I like a good whine like anyone else. But I do wonder sometimes what's in the cheap plonk that you see everywhere. Apparently a lot of is shipped in concentrated form and then re-diluted in the UK and then bottled with some fancy label. God knows what E-numbers are also shoved in. Yes, it tastes OK, but my hangovers vary in intensity regardless of quantity drunk. And I'm sure it's not the alcohol doing it.

Meanwhile, back in Blighty…

Outrageous. They cannot say the price is due to UK tax!

£2.23 duty per bottle then vat on the whole amount. So 2.49 euros works about ££2.12 plus duty £4.35 plus vat makes it £ 5.25. With a bit on for shipping plus the vat on that there's not as much difference as it first appears to the£6.99 rate.

Torre Oria Viñedo Antiguo. 3 euros from mercadona. Made from the bobal grape, and old established vines in the Valencia region. This wine was recommended to me by a guy who could never remember its name. Personally I found this a bit sweet with a shorter after taste. It's forgetfulness is quite contagious.

The Guvnor. 2.60 euros from Mercadona. A Tempranillo blend with grapes taken from a number of regions. I've had loads of recommendations about this wine but was always put off by the name. Reminded me of Paul Ince, who called himself the "guvnor" but bottled out when it came to penalty shoot outs. This however has a very mild kick to it. Is lacking in body and was far too sweet for me. Some may like it's smooth gentle taste and it's impossible to argue against its price if that's what you like but to me it failed to step up to the mark. Again a limited after taste.

I think the guvnor is a bit "jammy" like 19 crimes. Ok for glugging.

Today a review of a cheap tasty Rose and a classy white

We used to really like the marques de riscal rueda but it kept going up in price! They have a very impressive winery with a distinctive hotel in rioja
