Windows -v- Apple

As I said in the post you quoted, all of my family are Apple converts so yes I have come across Apple products and they are vey much more regimented than Windows and Android. But, as I said, OK as a retail product.
We run our business on Apple products and are as powerful and capable as any.

Have a Mac and you can partition the drive to enable you to run your existing windows programs
just have to press a couple of keys on startup to get into that part of it.

I don't use Apple products as they're far to restrictive (and expensive) for me so only Windows and Linux. So, can't comment on the pros and cons for you however I do use Libreoffice 7 (as well as MS Office 2010) as there are versions for Windows \ Linux \ Apple. It will open \ create \ amend \ save Office documents to both previous and latest MS Office formats (ie .xls and .xlsx) so could be an option for you.

The only reasons I'm thinking about Apple is that many people seem to swear by them and I thought I would find out more, also I don't like the idea of MS 365. I prefer to own my own software, I currently have Office 2010 and there seems to be no option but to go to 365 if I want to upgrade. The program I must keep going is the very last UK version of MS Money for which I have not been able to find a competent replacement.
I used MS Money as my go to financial app for years until I discovered Bluecoins which I use and sync on my mobile and tablet (android). Its much easier for me to use as I don't need to use the laptop every time I need to update my purchases etc but if you specifically want to use your laptop then it won't be of use to you. I have a MacAir and a Windows 10 laptop but don't use either very often other than to put movies on hard drives and update my travels, maps etc using MS Autoroute 2013. The Mac is quicker and smoother but since reformatting the Windows pc and installing a fresh OS it's much better. I also put Linux Mint on my Mams old Acer to replace Windows Vista and that's also much better now. Hope this helps.

I don't get the cost argument that many people use.

I am writing this on my MacBook Pro, that I have had from 2013. It cost £2100.00 then, it is still an excellent laptop that is faster than many new windows ones.

I could sell it today in part exchange to Apple for £280.00 if I bought a new one of perhaps £400.00 on ebay.

The dilemma I have is when torempace it. I would like a new one, but cannot justify the purchase as this one is just fine!

So the cost per annum is roughly £260.00 per annum. I suspect most Microsoft users would be on their second or third laptop in the same time scale.

The added bonus is an Apple just works, unlike windows!

I have a software package that only works on windows, so I have Parallels installed and I can click on a desktop icon and access a windows computer.

The reality of course is that for most "domestic" users an iPad will now do 99% of peoples requirements.

I’m using MS Office 2019 🤔
For the moment at least there’s MS 365 products and the traditional offline versions available.

I have a 2011 Mac Air and an even older Acer Aspire laptop and both are working fine although I've had more problems with the Acer and had to replace the battery and HDD recently. In fairness I have used the Acer a lot more than the Mac. My mams laptop is also an Acer and older than both as I gave it to her when I bought the current Acer. Maybe I've just been lucky though I do try to look after my gadgets!

I've never understood why anyone would want to dump a tried and tested computer with a fully supported operating system in favour of a much more expensive one within which the manufacturer builds in planned obsolescence to boost profits!

All computers have built in obsolescence, its the nature of technology, it does not matter if its Microsoft, IBM, Apple etc,

A mate is using my old 2010 MacBook, it cannot run the latest software but did keep getting OS updates until late 2018. So its still running its just I wanted a system running the latest versions. I had a 2007 Mac Mini that ran until 2018, I just used it as a media server but the disc failed and I just purchased another base Mini to be a media server.

Microsofts own PC's are also as expensive as Apple, a new Surface 3 13" with i7 chip with 16gb Ram and 512GB hard drive is £1750

"All computers have built in obsolescence,"? Not sure about that.
Lots of desktops have sub parts that are upgradeable to keep life in the 'ole dog.
Which is what people who describe Apple Macs are trying to say with less words. (y)

In case it helps .........

Groupon have fairly regular offers of upgrade keys for MS Office to the newer versions. Having heard cautionary tales of codes turning out to be corporate ones I originally bought one code through groupon. That took my Office up to the 2019 version and has not (touch wood) been challenged by Microsoft.

Judging by the way Microsoft and many others are moving quickly to charging subscriptions for their software, I wouldn't be surprised if Office 2019 is the last version you can buy outright

We’re getting a 2021 version 👍🏻
(If there’s something missing from 2019 🤔)

So I upgraded the RAM, Changed the Hard Drive and Battery on My old Mac but other than that most do not wish to undertake upgrading components, which is what helped Apple in that the stuff just works. Personally I don't want a Bitsa machine for Business it has to work and has to be reliable. MS now do the same by providing MS Hardware and Software. Most people either don't wish to play with the computer components or if they do don't buy a Mac (or High end MS machine.

As they say you pay your money and take your choice

Chromebooks don't go obsolete. All upgrades to the system just happen. All you have to do every now and then is turn off and turn on. No problem with losing data, all is backed up to your google account. If you buy another machine, again just sign in and everything is there, photos, spreadsheets, documents etc. Spreadsheets and documents, if you want, seamlessly open in MS Office.
However, I still have a Windows desktop for things such as Lightroom/Photoshop, but even these sort of programs are starting to work well in the browser.

Ah Google and Chrome yup its a model if you want someone to hold your data, its not one for me particularly Google...

Anyway, staying on topic, the OP mentioned they’d be after a laptop.
Windows or Mac, a laptop typically will just have memory upgrades or battery swap options.
And they can use MS Office 2019 on it now or 2021 late next year.
For several MS Office versions they’ve also used the Open Document Format for Office Applications like OpenOffice suite.

Couldn’t remember which release I had just checked Office for Mac 2019

Apple is an advertising miracle. The power to influence belief that paying more than you need to will give you a better product.
If you no nothing of how computers or phones work and just want to do what you are allowed to do go with apple. Millions have and are quite satisfied with the limitatioms they are presented with and are more than happy to have a thousand pounds worth of bling.
The more discerning (some might say tight) look elsewhere.

Then I'm definitely discerning... ;)

There is no doubt, apple produce objects of desire, and can be refer to as Bling, but having never lost data in the past decade brings a certain peace of mind, my 2010 Mac Pro cost around £1500, My 2020 Mac Pro cost around £2,400. You can buy Microsoft machines that cost as much. Having built and fault finded on some quite large specialist computers. I think I am discerning enough to know when a company builds a decent machine (its not just bling). Part of the cost of an Apple product is the 'free' OS software updates which in the past you had to buy and is probably why the cost difference of a similar machine over the past decade.

For me its a workhorse, My Wife has one as well again its a workhorse the Macs run our business.

Just another thought you can buy a MotorHome for a few thousand or you can spend a few Hundred £k on a N&B

You pay your money and you take your choice for me Apple ticket all the boxes.

What a strange thing is this you mention about limitations?

Coolcats good to see that apple have such a devoted follower.
Like you have said above several times 'you pays your money ...'
I wont bore everybody with my career history working with computers.🥱

Au contraire. My Toshiba laptop cost £200 10 years ago. Still working perfectly acceptable.

There are many of us Apple devotees just as there are Microsoft ones and do please tell of your history of working with computers there are many of us who have and it’s always good to hear others talk about their experience.

but I am I still intrigued what are these Apple limitations you speak of?

Your probably running something like windows 7 which wasn’t a bad release, then they went a bit flakey as MS tried a new path and win 10 and surfface made MS a stronger proposition again There are probably still a number of machines running XP cranking away out there. Toshiba have made some good Laptops.
The High end MS laptops are as expensive as Apple I guess that’s just the market.

I have both Apple and Windows computers. I use Apple for daily tasks such as emails, browsing, spreadsheets and data storage. I keep a Windows laptop for one or two tasks that Apple do not allow, such as using Connectify to turn it into a virtual router.

If I had to choose between the two I would choose Apple and I do not accept that it would mean I am less discerning or buying bling, thank you very much berni109 . It would simply be me exercising my right to spend my money as I choose based on my personal experience of how the two systems have performed for me.

I am also intrigued about these limitations, or 'wall garden' that I have not come across before - only some who's perception of what's on the other side...and the earth isn't flat.
Very polarised views - always is on this site and I also find it slightly difficult to be totally impartial myself as I ran a creative team for 30 years all within a mac environment. However to my mind the Mac world has been fundamentally been built around the 'user' and the relationship/integration between different aspects of work and play. Spreadsheets to photo/video editing, music to taking your blood oxygen levels, to modelling complex buildings, even the integration of airplay to continue the journey in your motorhome! Their investment around different technologies, materials, the environment is by design has always been been at the forefront. But hey I am not trying to persuade anybody, going back to the OP there is a significant difference but it don't be afraid to take a leap of faith. It does come with a number utility packages like spreadsheets, word processing etc and there is a tremendous number of specialised packages and apps available. The software updates are also free, printers, storage and other hardware are mostly all compatible with mac's. Go for it, you will not be disappointed.
