Windows 10 update

@Mack100
I bought my first Mac in 2002, an iBook, G4 and I fell in love with it.. compared to my Compaq windows pc it was a breath of fresh air..

my next Mac was in 2005, a 17" Powerbook.. what a beauty.. and I still have it but sadly, the screen has some broad vertical lines making it unusable and it's not worth repairing as it's version of OS X is no longer supported.. and can't be upgraded.

Present Apple is a Macbook Pro.. Jan has an Macbook Air.. beautiful machines and an absolute joy to use.. almost perfect..

I also have a desktop built by PC Specialist with W7 Ultimate and to be perfectly honest it's almost as good as OS X .. it's fast and stable.. no crashes. had it running for almost three years and never had to do a windows re-install .. tried W10 and didn't get on with it so back to W7

To say one or the other operating systems is crap is just nonsense ..

@ScotJimland
I didn't say anything was crap. I'd still be happily using my Win7 machine except for the Win10 fiasco which rendered it virtually useless.
Funnily enough my wife's pc has now gone belly up, won't even boot into safe mode. I spent all yesterday afternoon and evening trying to fix it so it's off to the Apple Store tomorrow for her to look at a refurb Macbook.

I'm very grateful that you posted this link. My big grumble with windows 10 was that I couldn't watch the movies that I have on my pc, but downloaded this link & hey presto my movies are working again. Thank you :D
No probs.:) You can also do a fair bit more than watch movies with VLC like convert formats, etc.(y)

I downloaded the update last night and tested my expensive printer today, works fine....(y)

For those Funsters running Win 10 and installing the latest update pack there are a number of reports surfacing of this update uninstalling various software packages \ drivers including CPU-Z, Speccy, 8gadgetpack, Cisco VPN, SATA drivers, Spybot, Adobe Creative Suite, etc, etc, etc ..........
It creates a folder called Windows.old where it sticks these deleted packages and other stuff.

Since installing it on this machine I've had a message saying ABBYY PDF Transformer 3.0 doesn't work properly. Turned out that it isn't compatible with Windows Insider but as I don't want to use that it doesn't matter :)

evidently my sound drivers are foe an earlier version but still work fine but the notice is annoying every time i boot but cant seem to get rid

Excellent thread, thanks to all for the input.(y)

I've just bought a 'JAWS' dashboard cam, and also read the 'how to' by gellyneck.
opened the laptop and now able to download win 10.
on the resource page gellyneck states that the camera works with XP, Vista and 7.
Does it work with 10 before I download it. (I've not yet programmed the camera)

The JawsCam I've got arrived earlier this year prior to release of Windows 10 so supplied specification did not state compatibility with this latest operating system. In addition, the software was written in 2011! I've no immediate plans to update Windows 7 so can't advise further at this point, sorry.:(

Can anyone who's just received a unit from Johns latest batch check to see if the spec now includes Windows 10?

It works on my Windows 10, 64 bit.
I must admit this is the only thing about the JawsCam which I dislike, apart from it being a bit big. That you can't readily access the video files without using a PC. On my last dashcam I could access the files using an android tablet and a card reader.

gellyneck/Graham/dbk, (sorry not sure of names yet).
Thanks for quick reply. Now started download of 10.
Fingers crossed!

Just updated the User Manual to Version 1.1 in Resources to reflect the advice from some Funsters (DBK(y) and GJH(y)) that the integrated software supplied with the Dash Cam is compatible with Windows 10.

Any issues \ corrections required let me know.

on my second day of windows 10, think I hate it.............but will give it a chance as this is now THE Microsoft operating system. Could not log on to bt mail and when I contacted the help desk was told to reload 7 as lots of people have had problems. (I have now sorted that fault) Also and even worse could not sign in to FUN!!!! password not recognised. Reset now but fault turned out to be the cookie settings. Time will tell but have to say not getting on very well with it but feel I should persevere. OH and one other thing that may be a deal breaker is adblock will not work and I cannot stand the bloody adverts:swear2:......even on fun

Adblock Plus works fine with Firefox under Win 10.

Have used Adblock Plus for a number of years however there are growing reports that the owner now accepts payments to add advertisers to their White List (not that I've noticed it) and is becoming a bit of a memory hog. Testing uBlock Origin instead on one of my laptops.

Had a problem on my Asus Transformer two days ago.
Not being able to isolate the cause I reset the thing.
OK windows 10 put some stuff in the Windows old folder BUT, all my programs work and I cannot believe how fast it is now running!
Tempted to do the same on my main laptop!!!

AB Plus is working fine for me, using Chrome with Win 10. (y)

I couldn't get on with The Edge browser though, hence Chrome reloaded.

Cheers,

Jock. :)

Downloaded 10 onto laptop, took about 2 hrs, no problem. Played with dash cam, again no probs.
Cannot now open W10., getting message "Critical error. Start up and Cotana are not working at the moment. We will try and fix it next time you sign in".
They haven't (two days now) and I can't use the computer at all as it remains open on W10. Unable to switch back to W7 for instance. I have disconnected from mains, let the battery go flat turned ba ck on and straight to W10.
Any suggestions peeps?

If you Google Critical error. Start up and Cotana are not working at the moment. We will try and fix it next time you sign in you will find a number of suggestions including This from Microsoft.
If you are having trouble getting into Safe Mode try forcing a switch off with the power button then remove and replace the battery before starting up.

If you are using Windows 10 with Microsoft Edge then you need to get ADGUARD. You can get a free trial then pay for it. It woks very well and makes things much faster without all those pesky ads.

Since I download the latest win 10 update the computer wont shut down, I have to press the power button.
Restart is just the same, it seems to get it's self into a loop.
On restart it never comes up with a fix or even a 'illegal shut down fault'

Any ideas peep's

Thanks for reply. Done as advised, now working. Thanks.
Shocked to see reply in thread was in August and still not fixed by Microsoft!

I would like to try Win10 but as I have a Sony Vaio laptop I believe that it's not compatible with Win10 so will just have to stick with 7. I don't know what will happen when Microsoft roll out the compulsory update?.
