Will LPG be phased out?

It mentions fuel stations BUT I am aware of 2 local taxi companies that have installed their own LPG tanks to supply drivers and also sell to the public. Also Marquis leisure have done the same.
So while some main forecourts are taking them out, other places are putting them in. Maybe not at the same level but there is still the Domestic and leisure users.

I was in moreton in marsh last weekend and as I sat in a pub there was an amazon artic stopped outside at the roundabout that was lpg powered, didnt know amazon had them but if they have invested 🤷‍♂️

It sure is getting tougher to find LPG garages up here in Surrey, I have to check before I go out these days to make sure they still have a pump on the forecourt.
We were never lucky enough to have Morrisons however large, selling LPG round our way, but I think I read recently they are also stripping LPG pumps out in the near future, same as Shell have for the most part.
I do tend to try and find an LPG garage en route, but even then I have had trouble as either the pump wasn't working or they had run out of LPG gas.
I still feel such a relief when I do find an LPG pump working and fill up, I don't even consider the price, I just feel lucky to have got some these days.

The reason many garages are stripping out their LPG tanks is twofold.

Many were installed over 25 years ago, they have now reached the end of life and therefore need to be removed, however the cost of the reinstallations does not make financial sense to many.

Many garages are looking for a space where they can set up electric recharging.

LPG out and electric charging in. for many this is the financial best way to go.

Will you still be able to buy LPG in UK garages (and other places) in 10 years time ? Yes.
As there is a demand from fleets, boats and motorhomes as well as BBQ's etc.

Not here in Spain it won't, mains gas is fairly uncommon here, so Mr and Mrs General Public depend on the Repsol delivery on Thursday, other areas other days, more pumps are being installed at filling stations for us all to use, when I bought my new Citroen a couple of years ago I had a good offer on LPG powered model...but more importantly our Hymer has a Glaslow system installed and there is no way jumartoo can carry those heavy cylinders for exchange....;)

Yes.. some garages are removing pumps but does that not mean the ones that keep them will have a larger customer base and therefore more profitability!

LPG in every petrol station here in Italy. And petrol stations are everywhere too - even the small villages seem to have 2 or 3. Many cars run on LPG, that's the difference. If there was demand in the UK it would be a different story but LPG has never been promoted or been taken up by drivers in the same way in the UK.

My local LPG station 5 miles away has removed it’s LPG pump, and has installed about 10 electric charging points. They still aren’t working as there isn’t enough power to the area to power it.

Great planning. Well done. 🙄🙄

Les, if you've not tried it yet, download the Autogas App on you phone, tablet, or PC.

We are quite lucky round here having 7 x Autogas outlets within a 17 x mile radius, with the cheapest being Flogas @£0.70ppl

Cheers,

Jock. :)

There are quite a few LPG Gas Specialists who I guess will be in it for the long run.
I agree.

LPG may be phased out from most garage forecourts but there are others who would want to see some supplies maintained. Perhaps it will be less convenient and we will need to plan ahead. Flogas already have a small network of self service key sites, I can see this growing to fill in some of the gaps.

I will be buying about 3,000 litres of propane annually for my home heating for many years to come. There are many more like me who will be keeping Calor and Flogas in business for a while. LPG will not be disappearing over the next 2 years but it might take more time and effort to keep our motorhome tanks topped up.

LPG on the traditional fuel forecourt is being phased out although the likes of Flogas and a few forward thinking companies are taking up the mantel.
Flogas are beginning to build dedicated LPG mini filling stations in and around some business areas and Marquis has begun installing Flogas filling points at their dealerships, I think the first one is in Exeter or Ivybridge?

Word is more dealerships will follow suit... the desire is there.

LPG like oil will still be around in the future but in less quantities and as the volume of oil refining decreases the less LPG there will be.

There will never be a switch to LNG in such small quantities as it always needs to be kept in a cryogenic state to stay a liquid unlike LPG which remains a liquid due to pressure.

Very new one at Texaco Box Hill.We have mapped out a refit option N,S, E and West of where we are so when out and about just make a point of refilling both bottles even if it means a slight detour

An inquiry has appeared on the Honest John website - Will LPG be phased out in the UK?

And according to the response - yes, within a couple of years.

Not in my lifetime! The Government would not stand the backlash from homeowners, converted car users, Motorhome /Campervan users that use LPG as a source of heating and traction!

My brief summary in the initial post was perhaps somewhat light on detail, but the Honest John (a motoring website) item referred to, made clear it was about filling station forecourts in the UK. I believe many of the comments in this thread concur and folk have noticed the trend to reduce lpg availability at the major fuel stations, in preference to installing electric charging points.

Not suggesting it will disappear altogether.

A couple of years back the local gas place we use was without for a number of months and were seriously considering stopping supplying due to lack of demand and focussing on cylinders.

Was in having a blether with her a couple of days ago and she was well pleased that they had continued as a huge number of Glasgow taxis are \ have been converted to lpg and she's up to two full deliveries a week now.(y)

Converting the taxis to LPG probably a lot cheaper than buying new ones to comply with the emission zones??

Not Down South round here Bill, 3 nearest Morrisons, newish shops at Cove near Farnborough, Fleet & a big one at Aldershot have not installed LPG pumps. I only know of one on the south coast, Worthing way, near Lenny HB, most seem to be north of the northern border Watford & beyond.:giggle:
I would love someone to tell me why that is/was the case, never did know that answer.

From a Motorhome point of view, they could become less prominent on forecourts, economically how much do we actually buy, often with the need for assistance. However, two campsites I visit have introduced Autogas points. e.g. The Lakes in Henlow and another in Stratford on Avon. The most relevant place for us, you are not expected to stay at these sites.

The overall obstacle isn't about whether users want it, it's about PFS retailers being able to make a profit on the very small amounts sold to road users across the U.K.
The simple answer is they don't so it has to go.
The volume of road users who burn the fuel as an alternative to petrol or diesel is miniscule, it's less than 1%.

Campsites, dealerships and even many of the leisure outlets such as Decathlon which in many areas have large out of town stores selling bottled gas anyway all have the real estate to allow the likes of Flogas to install holding tanks and pumps. It makes more sense.
