I think I read somewhere that the little rocker switch in the attached photo can just be levered out. Is this true, or does it have little prongs that will snap off?

Hopefully someone will know, but if it was mine I'd warm it gently first which should make any ears or prongs a bit more flexible as they do become brittle over time.

Or treat yourself to a set of car trim removal tools, cheap enough and they might come in handy for other little jobs.

Is there a reason to remove it ?

Normally the cupboard above will have a false shelf, ours does anyway and it has a plastic cap I can lift to gain access to the back of all switches.

Car trim removal tools. Once there’s a gap get your fingers both sides and pull gently.
Just mind your fingers once the springs pop out!

Intermittent failure of light. Dodgy connection?

Good thought but not with this particular switch.

Probably the light , they have a known problem, certainly on mine , (2020)
Have replaced 5 , also the rear bed lamp

One of the lights was like a disco 🥺
Possible. It feels more like an intermittent contact, although I suppose a dodgy light would appear the same. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. It doesn't flash or flicker.

I’d clean the bulb and holder contacts first.
It looks like an led light and they draw such little current that a little corrosion causes issues,
