I think I read somewhere that the little rocker switch in the attached photo can just be levered out. Is this true, or does it have little prongs that will snap off?

Hopefully someone will know, but if it was mine I'd warm it gently first which should make any ears or prongs a bit more flexible as they do become brittle over time.

It will just come out. Blunt knife under the edge.

They use a plastic bridge type tab that grips the sides of the hole the switch is in, and as said, just get under the edge and pop it out.

Or treat yourself to a set of car trim removal tools, cheap enough and they might come in handy for other little jobs.

Is there a reason to remove it ?

Normally the cupboard above will have a false shelf, ours does anyway and it has a plastic cap I can lift to gain access to the back of all switches.

Car trim removal tools. Once there’s a gap get your fingers both sides and pull gently.
Just mind your fingers once the springs pop out!

Good thought but not with this particular switch.
