Wild Camping NOT - Freeloading Tossers

I have seen more and more tuggers wild camping recently, I guess there is no difference in the two, motor home or caravan the legalities are just the same for the two. Only problem is that the locals then think that we are all travellers together. Still you can’t blame them, why should they pay for a site when there are so many free places to stay. The south coast is becoming a free tuggers haven. Suffolk is not far behind.

Anyone else getting bored with this thread?

The opening thread was overtly offensive to many on this forum, and as such should have been ignored by all.
No one has to justify themselves regarding how they choose to live / camp / spend etc., but that's what's happening here.

Just do it how you do it.

Lynne, I think John and Brian were actually agreeing with you and were fed up of slurs on Wild campers... unless I have misread it.

Absolutely!!!!:thumb:

I too have just read through this thread and I think you will see a lot has happened in the eight years since it started, wild camping seemed to be the way of most but in the light of recent reports from Spain and else where the tide seems to be turning and just as an aside has anyone noticed how many of the wild campers are no longer members.

There are now very many free, and now very popular, motorhome groups on Facebook, which I guess are sucking members away nowadays.

So did anyone find out where this car park is in West Sussex, I'm down that way soon? :)

Just realised this post dates back to before I was born o_O so my comment was pretty much irrelevant anymore so I have deleted it.

Great read

Don`t both sides of this have a point?. Some of what was said has come true, example Dover Esplanade, has been banned recently. Used that myself in the past, but you could see the locals would eventually get fed up. Lots of places we used over the years have been closed off. Having increased mobility issues has restricted how we "camp". And of course "campers" are becoming bigger as we become more self-sufficient making it more difficult to "fit" in parking spaces. Ruling out using car parks anyway. I do like C-L/C-S`s though. And the increase in the number of "pub" stops are useful for single overnights when travelling.

It, in my view, is down to the abuse by a significant minority, who quite simply "outstay their welcome", there are cases of "campers" sitting in a car park for weeks on end, they have more in common with "travellers", than any other grouping. Even to the extent of also leaving behind their detritus, it only takes one or two and the whole Motorhome "brotherhood" is tarred with the same brush.

I posted this recently ref; Spain Portugal. but it could apply equally here?.

""Most sites are at least nominally secure, and with personal, and or public transport often reasonably close by It takes some hassle out of the situation. A nice if small pitch, is much preferable to some of the "Car Parks" and crowded sea fronts full of `vans, we saw toward the later end of our touring. I suspect the days of "Wilding" are numbered, spoiled by the great unwashed, sad but inevitable IMV. The best you can hope for, is a greater number of "Casual" sites. No facilities except maybe a dump and litter bin, possibly water?, for a nominal sum and restricted to 48 or 72 hours, effectively a paid extension of the "aire" system. Those who act responsibly now are going to find it harder""

That's true...Meanwhile, Motorhomefun get's busier and busier, with more members and thousands more posts every day than were ever posted on Facts in its largely pre-facebook heyday. Go figure

Bit of a sad thread...

I know its an old thread but its interesting that some of the restrictions that folk were warning about eight years ago have happened. I don't know the place in West Sussex referred to in the OP but I do know that Goring-by-Sea, West Sussex now has bollards all along the seafront green with signs prohibiting overnight camping. It's a wide green which runs a mile or so parallel with the seafront and people would park on the road then put a corral of windbreaks up in front of their vehicles, effectively making little gardens for themselves. I think that was the last straw. Its a shame as I expect if they hadn't done that it would have been OK.

We stay on a mixture of sites, wild camping and aires... We only stay on sites if we have to and I hope we will continue to be able to do so. Its not about not wanting to pay, for us its about being out in the wilds as much as possible.

I have gone back to work I will be parking variust place's not camping others a big difrance between wild camping and off site parking

When I was still Working, I used my Caravan, when on off-site job`s, usually on the work site, mostly Rig Yards, in a corner, and more than likely piped to water and EHU, or a local CL. But that was different to parking long term in some car park or back street on an industrial estate, which I have seen.

What is it with some people? I've noticed the same couple camping (dossing) in a West Sussex car park for the last four days. There are load of empty sites in the area that charge really cheap rates at this time of year, there are even more CLs that need the patronage or they might disappear. But rather than pay these people park up in a car park, nicking parking slots for days on end, giving us all a bad name. They call themselves "Wild Campers" :ROFLMAO: Why Wild campers when they could use more fitting names like "Tight Wads" "Skin Flints" "Free Loaders" I'm alright jacks" "Freeloading Tossers"
yep....they can afford a MH but can't be bothered to park it properly.....disgusting behaviour and sooooo thoughtless and self centred.....clearly there are loads of them about but that doesn't make it right.

well interesting thread, what is a CL? and where do you find them?
a certificated location otherwise known as a 5 van site affiliated to one of the camping clubs

use one of the websites like ukcampsite and they list them all, but you need to be a member of the club to use them

Another night as a freeloading tosser
Tucked away in a discrete corner of Cheshire
Bill

Good on her Bill, one of the great wonders of having a van. Some folk want to try and put the freeloading tosser image across, all the noise you caused last night, I heard you revving the van at midnight to charge your batteries, by the way I saw you dumping sh1t from the toilet cassette in the bushes and look at the chuffing litter you have left behind when you finally p1ssed off after 5 days. People could not park their cars for you taking 3 spaces up and you told my wife to get stuffed when she spoke to you.she's a magistrate you know and will rally her colleagues around to get this behaviour banned forthwith.
This disgusting behaviour will result in a letter to the local newspaper, my councillor, motorhome magazines and I will exaggerate to my hearts content.
Oh, by the way, you need some new underpants if those on the washing line you hung out are anything to go by, my wife caught her face in them as she approached your van to speak to you, you horrible freeloading tosser.(Are you sure you washed them, my wife could smell them from 50 yards)
Hows that sound.
I can talk crap also.

There's a bit more to it than that.

They are 5 unit sites certificated by one of a number of organisations that hold an exemption under the Caravan Sites Act so that full planning permission and a full site licence is not required. The full list of organisations can be seen I can't be bothered to count them but I think there are around 200 in all although not many of them can grant Paragraph 5 exemptions. There are three different exemptions: permanent 5 van site (paragraph 5), club rallies or meetings (paragraph 6) and sites permanently under the occupation and supervision of the exempting organisation (paragraph 4) Exact wording here

Whether membership is required or not is a matter for each organisation to decide for itself.

Certificated Locations (CL) are what the Caravan Club call their network of 5 van sites and they require "membership"
The Camping and Caravan Club call theirs Certificated Sites (CS) and also require membership
The Motor Caravan Club (MCC) also use CL for their network but they do not require membership of their organisation.

In reality you will often find that the owners of locations affiliated to one of the big two companies are more interested in your cash than checking your membership card  I've never found lack of membership any hindrance when I want to use a CL.
