Wifi in motorhome

Thanks all, got a better idea of what to look for now. And thanks autorouter for the explanation of aerials and why they can be a good idea.

I was trawling through the mobile MiFis the other day, needing something a bit more up to date as my old one was missing some important frequencies. I couldn't find anything that would automatically turn on when power was applied as I want to hide it away somewhere with just an external power switch and don't want to faff with a compulsory power switch press on the device itself. Ideally it would also have external antennae for better signal.

In the end, realised that home broadband routers have all these features and typically run off 12V, so bought one of those. Ended up with a TP-Link Archer MR600. A bit larger, but I'll find somewhere to hide it. The lack of battery is a bonus.
A bit late I know, but it's worth looking at the Teltonika mobile routers. The RUT950 for example, or even the RUTX11, will do exactly what you describe.

Had my van nearly two years now and now I know what this is so I just need a SIM card and I should be good to go?

I use a Huawie 5577 Mifi with a Poynting MIMO aerial costs a few bob but can nearly always get a signal when the phones can't pick up anything.
I use the Huawie 5576 with an EE sim. How would I connect this poynting arial to the mifi unit. Doesn't have an sma fitting but rather two small holes ?

I don't think the 5576 has external aerial connections but there is more than one version.
Post a photo of your mifi showing the holes.

Thanks for answer have been advised holes are for Ts9 fitting. I might be wrong about the huawie number

This works great for us. Credit our Smarty Sim £10, 30gb over a 30 day period. This was ideal in Devon where we had no phone signal on our phones.

If we run out of credit we can always credit more online, or fall back on our phones to create a hotspot. (y)

Been looking at the Avtex Smart TV. Spoke to their tech department, they tell me that they will shortly be launching their own mobile WI FI unit. You will have a card call them and pay 20£ per month BUT only when you want it. The new smart tv will stream , have I player ITV Hub etc and hopefully Netflix. They are confident it can be used throughout Europe, making wi fi calling cheaper and eliminating the need for paying for si fi on a campsite.
Planned release is later this year.

How much data do you get for £20?

It's cheap and if it works for you great.
Just looked at the spec only 2.5db gain compared to 6.5db on the Poynting also they always quote max gain which will be in the higher frequency bandwidths the gain in the 800 mhz band will be naff all and that is where you need the gain in remote areas.
Hi Lenny
which of the Poynting antennae do you have?

There are three very similar antennae that look much the same. The link is for the A-MIMO-0003-V2-12 Solwise Roof Antenna with 2x2 MIMO LTE. That means it has MIMO (Multiple In Multiple Out) antennae for 4G mobile phone mast comms (LTE). This particular one has 2 in/out antennae.

The A-MIMO-0003-V2-15 has the same 2x2 MIMO LTE antennae, and also has 2x2 MIMO wifi antennae plus a GPS/GLONASS antenna. The wifi is useful for example when parked on the drive outside the house, to pick up the house wifi. It can also pick up any local wifi, free or paid-for, better than a standard wifi router will. The GPS/GLONASS antenna may not be particularly useful unless you have a router like the Teltonika RUT950 which can make use of it.

The A-MIMO-0003-V2-17 has 4x4 MIMO LTE antennae, and the same wifi and GPS antennae as the A-MIMO-0003-V2-15.

All the above will also pick up 2G, 3G and 4G, and are 5G-ready.

Thanks
Why did you change and what did you do with the old one?
Keep yir eyes aff it!:swear2:
See posts #19, #20 and #21 above.(y)

Sorry, I misunderstood and thought Lenny had changed his antenna. So you are still free to do the deal, I guess you are a Scot so would drive a hard bargain. Well good luck with that(Smilies will not load, so I am sending you a virtual selection)

Does anyone know if a Huawei B535 -232 router is compatible with a Poyting Mimo-3-v2-12 antenna?
Thank you.

My daughter has a B535 for her flat, it has two SMA connectors on the back which will fit the Poynting MIMO SMA cables (I know has I have the poynting antenna / E5577 setup).
See the guide that I have attached and verify with the seller there is no variation for the model you will buy.
The B535 is Cat7 = very good but remember its only as good as the LTE service at your location, I am managing fine with External antenna / Cat4 for films and iplayer and I go to lots poor reception areas (hilly/valleys etc)

I've just bought an ipad with built in sim. Haven't tried it yet. Has any one got one and how does it work?

Lenny’s recommendation is the best solution. Depending on your tv desperation, the first option is simply to tether the fire stick to your phone. This works for me most of the time (90%?). But the biggest necessity is a phone sim contract with a big data allowance; the fire stick can easily gobble up 1GB of data per hour when streaming tv.
In the UK but 2 gb an hour easily abroad..BUSBY.

It will work just like a mobile phone. IT won't have a sim in it - just a sim slot to put one in. You will need a sim from a mobile phone company linked to a contract or pay as you go deal.

If you don't want to be tied down to an ongoing contract here Smarty are one of the cheapest companies.

You can get an unlimited data package for £20 per month (currently on offer at ) £18 - it can be ongoing or renewed each month but you are not tied into more than a month at any time. If you don't intend using as much data as that there are cheaper alternatives down to £6 per month.

details here:

If you decide to get a sim from here then do use my link here as I get a reward for recommending you.

You can just hotspot from your phone to your iPad, so that you don’t have to finance two sims. That is what I do, if not using the WiFi.

Why would you use more data abroad? - data is data. How much you consume really depends where you are streaming from 4OD/ipayer/itv/netflix/nowtv all vary a bit on how much gig they consume. OF course whether you stream in Standard definition or HD will have a big impact too/

I don’t even use 1Gb per hour watching tv via firestick when away.

VXman - Thanks for the recommendation re Smarty. Do you know if this can be used in Europe please?
