Why do people tow cars behind motorhomes, rather than have a caravan?

Got bored after page 3 so don't know if anyone mentioned.......................some say it is illegal to A frame a car in most European country's anyway.
I am still toying with the idea of a toad.
Including the French ‘Code de la Route’,
the notification to Spanish police ‘Instrucción 08/V-74’,
EC regulations,
UNECE regulations
and, if you don’t believe that lot, refer to questions for written answers in the EU Parliament, https://www.europarl.europa.eu/doceo/document/P-7-2012-000299_EN.html?redirect.
And the reply, https://www.europarl.europa.eu/doceo/document/P-7-2012-000299-ASW_EN.html

😏.

That seems very clear then and to add to this, only last week was a friend of mine fined €40 in Spain for A framing and told if caught again then the car would be confiscated!

I didn't like the dealer anyway and wasn't prepared to go into debt for a sale with him. He looked down his nose at us from the get go:giggle:
I have met many of those in my time .
This comment and some others seem to think that seeking to understand others is “judging”, rather than an interesting conversation that could possibly* change my mind.

* It has.

Also, others have told me to just go off and buy a caravan. Where, exactly, did I say I wanted to do that? I don’t tow anything, amd don’t want to. I’ll not repeat my OP, but I think it’s quite clear that my question was about IF you tow, why not tow a caravan. A premise, that I thought might lead to an interesting discussion, not a kicking. I’m done now.
Who has given you a “kicking” ?
I've read all of the replies re toads, the only ones making sense to me is the medical need and the on board car (that's not a toad anyway), otherwise I just don't get it. There again I don't understand why anyone would put a MH on a site for a period of time other than one or two nights and then state that they "need" a car to get around...baffling.
As stated, we are all different. What if one”one both or all have mobility issues ?

I towed for years, and now have a car garage in the motorhome. Best justification I heard came from our friends, "because we want too and can afford too" basically says it all!
Only way to do it. Good on ya.
If we were into MHing like a lot on here i think thats the way we would go. But we are not so no point.

You should see me attach my Isabella Air awning and annex. Two hours later and it's up. 🙄
You do know that you can use a pump instead of using your own lungs don't you? 😄

Agreed - but it seems illogical. If caravans are banned, then anything towing should be.
We use the motorhome for days away, overnight stops, wouldn't do this with a caravan, we also use it to tow our track car for day/weekend events, the jet ski for days out (although it's getting sold), the motorbike from time to time if leaving the dogs at home and sometimes we tow our Smart car on the motorbike/small car trailer. A motorhome gives us the flexibility to do all the above mentioned activities whereas with a caravan we would be very limited in our activities. Everyone has different reasons for their choices and why they make them, it is not always black and white.

I just don’t get it. If you’re going to tow, surely it makes more sense to get a really decent car, and tow a large caravan. I must be missing something.

Advantages of car & caravan
Cheaper purchase cost
Only one vehicle with an engine, less to go wrong, lower road tax, lower MOT
Better fuel consumption
Much better car to drive around when you get there
More living space in the caravan (probably)

Disadvantages
Longer to set up, but then if you’re towing, you’re not moving on every day anyway.
Erm, because we want to. Next question 🤣

We tow our car on a twin axle trailer however we have seen a fair few cars on A frames down in Spain on this trip so I suppose if you take the chance and get stopped it makes life difficult? But a lot seem to get away with it?🤔

A lot do get away with it. Some get nicked though and, if you’re the only driver, that’s more than a little inconvenient!

Exactly that’s one reason we trailer as wife can’t drive👍😊

If you have two drivers onboard, not so much of a problem if stopped by plod... As a solo, I'd be stuffed so not worth the risk imo.

My take on this is if you know it’s illegal to use an A-frame in a certain country such as Spain but choose to ignore this for your own convenience
Your basically putting two fingers up to law as if to say I’m British I can
I can do what Iike 🤷🏻‍♂️
