Why are modern diesels so troublesome, by a mechanic.

Go on, cheer him up! 😩

Glad I’ve kept my 2006 SAAB 1.9TiD Convertible in mint condition. It’s got an EGR valve, which, at around £35 a pop, are cheap enough to change on the yearly service, same with the MAP sensor. The DPF in the exhaust gave me trouble for the first time in nearly 20 years since I bought it new, but I cleared that with some squirty stuff, changed a sensor and it’s as good as ever.

Shan’t be rushing out to buy anything newer just yet 👍🏻

As a Heavy Diesel Mechanic, I couldn't agree more and that is the reason I searched for a long time before buying my S/H Murvi on the 2007 Fiat Ducato LWB chassis.
It has the 2.3 multijet engine with EGR etc BUT legally does not require any DPF, CAT or AdBlue.

Yes, it does restrict me from driving through some Cities but most of them, both here and abroad, I have driven through already and these days are better seen from the top of a Double Decker Bus with someone else driving and free with my OAP BusPass.

(In a few years time when I reach 85, it might be up for sale, so the wisest of you, will place your deposit with me NOW!
Who knows what the future holds, you might get it early? 😄)
If I hadn’t already got one you would have been holding my folding but alas our Fiat 230 engine is excellent touch wood and is ULEZ compliant
Phil 👍

Mine is STILL, without all that gubbins, Euro 4 in the UK and 3 in France.
No I don't know there is a difference either? 🤔

Our 2017 Citroen C4 Picasso 1.6D suffered the AdBlue failure earlier this year and cost us nearly £1400 to sort out at an independent using PSA genuine parts. It’s the longest we’ve ever owned a car from new, previously owning BMW’s and Landrovers.
This ‘cheap end’ French car has been brilliant and not give us any issues until this.
It’s now fitted with a supposed modified, problems rectified Adblue tank and injection system, though I won’t hold my breath. Being Euro 6 it’s saved us £1100+ by being zero road tax since new, so the repair cost wasn’t too bad.
It’s been our ‘second’ car for the last few years and we don’t want to say goodbye to it, it’s surprisingly comfortable, quiet and economical.
I’m now going to drain and refresh the AdBlue annually along with Wynns treatment.

Fiat say not to use additives in the AdBlue. I would check before doing this.
It’s had it in since it was repaired and recommended by the Citroen specialist independent mechanic after checking with Citroen.
Some systems recognise it as a contaminant and show up a fault apparently.

There are lots of 20 year old motorhomes on the road still running great and proving to be very reliable. I do sometimes wonder if a new 2024/25 motorhome will still be on the road in 20 years (assuming they aren’t forced off the road by environmental legislation). Our current motorhome has been back to the garage more times than any other vehicle I have ever owned and it is only 3 years old. I just wish Toyota/Mazda/Honda would make a large van!
We ran a 25 year old and very reliable 1997 VW T4 with the lovely 5 cylinder 2.5 TDI engine - Euro 4 and no complicated environment add ons..
The problem with 25+ year old campers is that eventually you are left with a reliable diesel engine sat in a rusty old chassis and self destructive body.
I have to say that my 2017 Euro 6 Skoda 2.0TDI running on AdBlue/EGR etc, has never given any problems at all, neither has our 2022 Ducato which has now covered 16k. If you use a modern diesel and not just go on short trips and/or park them up for 6 months every year then you stand a fighting chance of not having lots of tech problems.

Very interesting, particularly since our Opel Zafira has just been taken to the garage on a breakdown truck today! It had gone into limp mode and our diagnostic thingy said the particulate filter

On the Navara groups many people delete the adblu and egr. There are many firms offering this service. I hope not to do this, however several people have had serious problems with under warranty vehicles that main dealers cannot sort out.🫤

Cannot speak about a type 4 VW BUT, my 1989 LHD VW Westfalia California
( originally German ) is not a 'rusty old chassis and a self destructive body,

probably because it was made in Germany and I have Waxoyled it and it is a daily driver 12 months a year. 😄

Didn't the Zafira have a recall for an upgrade a couple of years ago? 🤔

My isuzi pickups don't cause too many issues I've just a 3 year old one euro 6 having covered 190k miles and I've still got a 10 year old euro 4 that's done 450k miles and they are always towing

The 309D van I used to drive as a courier/delivery pleb in the mid-80's topped 309000 miles (it had a photo in some trade magazine) but we checked the oil every morning and topped it up, yet the engine and the bay was spotless. It ran out of breath at 60mph but we delivered other peoples stuff to homes, shops and factories. Sometimes it was running 18-20 hour a day depending on where we had to go. I'd get out after a long day and another driver would do evening runs lasting into the night.

But was it really better than a modern diesel?

We had the option to delete for £300, very tempting as it still passes the MOT. It’s not against the law to do it either, that’s why companies can openly advertise the service.
It is however illegal to use on the road a vehicle that doesn’t meet the emissions standards for the VED category it’s in. Tax fraud maybe?
How anyone would know, I don’t know, though I suspect it may be in the MOT at some point in the future.
