Who’s got a static caravan ?

Think Minxy might have had some experience?
Yes, we had 2 statics with conservatories believe it or not! The site didn't have extortionate fees (no clubhouse etc), no renting allowed and open 10 months of the year with very low annual site fee and NO commission required on sales. We bought the first then wanted one with central heating as we were using it in winter so had the second one whilst we finished remodelling the first which we then sold, unfortunately though our Lily (RIP) was scared silly of the bird scarers and wouldn't even get out of the car when we got there so we had no choice but to sell the second one, the only saving grace was that we actually made a profit on both when we sold them and that was after the site fees! :giggle:

There's also quite a few other threads about static caravans on the forum so if you do a search you should be able to read about the ins/outs of ownership.

I think Minxy has a couple of Lodges she rents out . Hiring could be an option but this would more for us to use than a financial investment.
Just looked at the prices for Butlins . Eye watering .
We do now but used to have statics (see above), the lodges are a different kettle of fish as we bought them specifically as investments and to date have never stayed in them.

We have a static in North Wales 30 van site no rentals only to family, 10 1/2 months open, no age limit as long as well maintained, and we use it regularly
Site fees £3500, water rates shared between 30 vans, mains gas, full central heating as I fitted 4 extra radiators (retired heating and plumbing engineer). Decking to side and front and Pat just loves the van lifestyle we have it home from home with all the comforts of home. We are not stuck in one place as there’s so much to see and do in North Wales.
John.

We had one a few years ago worst thing we ever done.
Got ripped off when we had to sell.
Big money losers for us

Not a static as such. Large tourer stored in Spain, on the Med.
400 euros a year plus sight fees when we visit.
Handy to fly over for long weekends or motorhome down there for longer stays.
Off next week

Worst thing I ever bought, campsite has you buy the danglers right from day one, you have to have insurance through them, rental goes up every year, then when your van gets to be so old they make you take it off which you can't do as no other site will have it so you end up having to take what the campsite offer which will be pence.
Worst of all though you end up going to the same old place every time you have a holiday just because you have paid to have it and can't waste it.
No mate ,stick to your van.
Honestly it's like a nightmare everytime I think about it.
I have a static, I do my insurance through whoever I want to use, have a 20 year lease, still 15 years to run will will see me out. Use to have a lodge in the lakes, would stay for s few days then travel in the Moho through to Scotland or wherever for a week or so and drop back to the lodge for a few days stay, we had the best of both worlds.
So it can work if you want it too.

All what you have said is true it happened to me and a few friends at 7 Lakes in Lincolnshire.
It worked out to buy a house a mile from the site 😃

I've always thought that's a better option. At least you own the land it's on and although it's going to need ongoing maintenance it's going to add value in the end

I have a static in Norfolk and Absolutely love it. I don’t compare it to motorhoming or caravaning. it’s just different. When we’re not there, our children, grandchildren or parents are using it and we have a whole new set of friends and neighbours.

We had a static on Anglesey for 7 years, prior to moving here full time.
When we had had it for 5 years a pipe burst, flooding the van, writing it off, didn’t realise insurance was new for old, so when we sold got a good deal as it was only 2 years old!

I’ve not had one. I have a friend who had four over about 6/7 years.

He lost a fortune on them.

Started off with a 2 bedroom, changed to a 3 bedroom.

Moved sites, again started off with a 2 bedroom, upgrade to 3. Then bought an additional one to rent out. Became a nightmare. In the end, he lost tens of thousands and he now has a tourer.

Im sure the figure was £90,000

He could have bought a nice place in France or Spain for that.

Me, I would never say never. But….

Exactly my friends experiences.

We had two static caravans over a 14 year period.
Were they value for money - no.
Was it worth it - absolutely.
We had them beside a large lake (Lough Erne) and our kids grew up water skiing and camping out on the islands.
Great memories for us and our children, that will never be forgotten.
However, be prepared for a shock when you come to sell.
They are not like motorhomes and the depreciation is horrendous.
As others have said, check the terms and conditions very carefully.
Ours had to be sold back to the site owner and they could therefore "name their price"
If you held out for more, you ran the danger of having to pay another years site fees.
We received 20% of what our van had cost us 10 years earlier when new.
It was a high spec van with double glazing, central heating , decking etc. and was in excellent condition.

Another lesser problem but also there was friends and relatives thinking because you had a static they could just borrow it for peanuts, and yet it was costing us near on £100 a week whether we used it or not but they didn't think of paying anywhere near that.

Up here a lot of static sites are moving more to " lodges" which a few years ago cost the same as a small house but with service charges etc. I think you'd have to be bonkers. They're not the same cost anymore as houses have increased about 50% since.

We’ve got a static in Cheshire and we love it.

Plenty of parking for the car and the moho.

We looked very seriously into buying a lodge in Cornwall.

New, Wooden, A frame, two bedrooms in the grounds of an ex stately home with pool, bar/restaurant, tennis courts etc.
At the time it would have made a bit of sense as my mother lived walking distance away, so it would have had a lot of family use.

Renting out via the site owners, they took a big cut, and wanted a minimum of XX weeks in the summer per year including all of August. (Which would have been when we wanted it)

The other big downside is they would not let us erect a shed in which to store all the stuff you need to entertain a load of kids during a summer holiday, deckchairs, table, umbrella, inflatable boat, pool, plus the stuff you want in the kitchen etc. etc.
(We even looked at getting a box trailer and storing it at my mothers)

Bottom line is it did not make sense financially, we would have been better off simply hiring one for a couple of weeks as and when needed.
My mother then converted a barn into accommodation, which solved the problem, and we took all the lessons learned and bought a small holiday let on the Kent coast, where we can go in-between the bookings.

So not, I'd not buy a static when I have a motorhome.
The motorhome does everything a static can do except the space.
If you are that bothered, buy a big touring caravan and stick it on the site of your choice for a season, and move it each year.
