OK. So haven't that much space in my van for additional batteries but I am pulling out 2 x leads and replacing with 4 x 100ah lithium.. It's said that lithium can be fitted vertically. Side on or whatever.
It just goes against the grain to fit batteries other than terminals uppermost
Comments please and any experiences.

These were installed upside down :giggle:

This one is made by Apple

On a serious note am I right in thinking you could make a box for the cells shaped to fit the space available and perhaps fit the terminals near the top for easy access and connection.

This is a seplos battery kit, that I've put together a while ago. Cells on their side, vertical box on wheels. They do have liquid electrolyte and a relief valve at the top. That's the reason you can not put them with terminals facing down; atleast the prismatics type.

4x100ah that's some off grid power bank....our single 160ah was our game changer....never been below 50% charge....
Hope it serves you well when completed..👍🇪🇦🥳

Nope, it's you that's a lightweight Martin, I've just fitted 2 x 230ah & they are coming up at 240 & 245ah so 485ah avalible. 😀

It wasn't the individual Cells that make up the batteries I was interested in. But a standard retail 12v battery in a sealed case .
I have space to install the batteries longways up with terminals on thier sides.
It's just that in the 55 plus years of driving and messing about with vehicles it goes against the grain to change from convention.

I've squeezed 280Ah of Fogstar in the standard Fiat seat base. Laying on its side. The Fogstar manual says orientation isn't important. Unlike lead acid batteries, there's no liquid sloshing about and no gases to vent. So orientation doesn't matter.

Only wish our Hymer battery storage would have taken more or a bigger battery, but totally maxed out space wise...the original battery on this van was a single 90ah LA..
However if we do change our van (Utility vehicle) which has been discussed many times, I'll be joining the heavy weight club for sure....😀😀👍🇪🇦

Both mine are on their side.
Just installed mine sideways, states in the manual that it would be fine.
Mine is on its side Jim.
I suppose there is also less chance of anything falling onto the terminals if sideways on.
I was thinking of standing mine up on the short ends as I have more vertical space than horizontal . They would be less stable in a vertical standing position rather than laying flat so will have to secure them somehow.
I may have to build a box. (y)

I used 3mm 50x25mm alloy on two sides to secure mine.

Can I just hijack this post with a question?
It's always been the norm to fit batteries of same size, same age...
However would this apply to Lithium..as I paid a good wad of cash for my Roamer just a year ago....and if I changed the van...I would like to transfer it to the next van and add another 160ah to it....would this be an issue....the BMS shows 60 charging cycles....
Trying to get this quality of battery in Spain isn't easy...just a thought..

Id also like to ask a question.
How do you know the actual capacity of the batteries and can you only do this with lithium?

I asked the same question and you can mix. I had a 200a KS Energy underseat from my last van that I moved, since added a 280a Fogstar and all working fine, seem to charge and discharge at similar rates. Wire them via bus bars and the solar controller just sees one big battery as does the shunt. There is some info and video in the thread below.

The BMS readout tells you the ah when they are charged also Fogstar say their 230ah batteries are normally between 240-245ah. Yes only with Lithium.

There is no liquid in them, so any way up whch fits is fine. For some obscure reason some say not actually upside down.

And in my 'van.
I would be a bit daft to orientate them upside down - how would access the terminals ? Unless you were hanging them off the ceiling 😛

It might also mean the weight of the cells is resting on top of the BMS.

Yes you can mux & match them, there are a few YouTube videos testing different batteries with different BMS in parallel they appear to work OK.

Ours is fitted on its side Jim. Works a treat!

Yes you can mix size and make on lithium
