I recently purchased another MH and was wondering which satellite dish to put on. My old MH has one from Jacksons leisure Satellites, I could pick up UK tv in southern Spain.
I’ve been looking around and there are a plethora of different types. One that is reasonably priced is Alden being sold by RoadPro. The coverage claimed seems to suit my needs, has anyone got any experience of Alden and are they any good?

I’ve tried to run an update via the dish using the software update option on the menu but the dish has just spun around for the last 10 minutes. All set to Astra2 and re-doing an automatic search and that’s not done anything either

Thanks. I’ve liaised with Anthony but he thought that it maybe due to being near an airport. However, when I’ve checked, we are about 4 miles from the airport plus caravans on site are getting reception on their sat dishes

sounds like you have a fault somewhere , the Oyster Caro dish has been in production a number of years is your an older version

That’s really interesting - thanks Eddie.
We have a Caro Digital sat dish and have not been able to pick up any channels in Bournemouth or Brackley or this trip.
I think Brackley because we were over the road from the US Air Force listening base so maybe a signal issue, Bournemouth? Near the airport but our system works near Leeds/Bfd airport which is a busier airport. Then I looked into the reposition of Astra2.
We’re now coming to the conclusion of either an upgrade or looking at alternative methods.
After all, there’s only so much we can sit and talk to one another on an evening, and we exhausted that by the time we’d left our home drive 🤣🤣

Probably had its day , only other thing I could think is the satellite cabling from the dish could be compromised
which would be worth looking at
since the electric motor appears to work fine
We're using an Oyster Vision1 satellite system Neil, (and GAVLAD Gavin, with a modification done by Jackson Leisure. It incorporates an offset LNB and a twin button box (buttons A & B), so that once the dish tunes in to Astra 1 on button A, I switch to button B, which brings in Astra 2E via the offset LNB. It works a treat..............................for now at least.

I'm just not sure what I need to do to pick up Astra 2E when in Spain, ie, rotate the offset LNB to 7 o'clock maybe, or both LNBs perhaps? :whatthe:

Cheers,

Jock. :)

I’ve read all the threads and still non the wiser. I’ve got a Camos ready to fit and debating. I doubt it will be mi-fi or whatever it’s called, mainly because of the initial costs involved and these new charges, I’m certainly not paying some outfit £20 month for the privilege.

Hi Jock if you were to adjust your LNB it would be further towards 7 o’clock for Astra 2 (28.2)
The second LNB which I assume is for Astra 1 (19.2) should not need any adjustment since Astra 1 puts out a very strong signal over Europe

however I would try it first once your out there
If your reliant on Freesat via Astra 2 you won’t get a great deal of channels once in Spain apart from CNN , Sky News , Pick , Challenge and few others not worth mentioning
If you are using a SKY box with a monthly subscription card you will receive a lot more english speaking channels which are scrambled unless as previously mentioned you have a valid viewing card .

Talk to satellite superstore.
They are experts and supply fixed and mobile systems all over Europe from the UK.
IPTV works ok with a good internet connection but uses a lot of bandwidth, and not our dear leader has allowed our mobile providers to charge us for roaming again and they are jumping on the bandwagon, that is a less attractive proposition for mobile use.
Ok if you have a property abroad with a fixed interest connection.

We tether the phone to the laptop in Spain and watch TV on that. When roaming charges catch up with us there is always the option of getting a local SIM in the supermarket.

I’ve got an older Oyster III 85cm twin LNB Autoskew. Had it on my 1st MH then transferred to current MH. Works well in UK and Europe apart from LNB arm sometimes gets stuck to the dish due to perishing rubber damper. Only ever search for Astra 2 but could search for others (not sure why I’d want to do that though). I wouldn’t bother with a double LNB in future ss only ever take one TV (an Avtex).

Recently changed my MoHo from a Carado with Sat dish to Hymer with 5 G antenna and Smarty Sim and Firestick.
Can live stream to 2 TVs at once less weight less costly and no constantly hunting for satellites. Only once have I been on a site with poor/ no reception. Yet had to pay to upgrade the Satrlite software on the Carado after 12 months! No contest. Future is SIM.

I’m not up to speed with data caps and roaming charges but it doesn’t sound cheap to me. £2 per day would soon add up to a decent, used Satellite system by my math.
If you spend say £1000 on a sat system, the maths predict 500 days of TV viewing, that is a lot of TV hours, without the cost of maintaining a sat set up.
We have a Road pro System which is a sensibly priced system and great in the UK, but if going into EU £2 a day seems a good price.

but would you not also have to add on, say £20 \ month data charges?

If so, that would bring it to c£80 \ month which gives you just over a year before it starts costing more for streaming rather than satellite. Or are my maths all wrong?

Your maths would be right if you are using the van all year round, in which case a satellite dish would probably be a good investment.
My usage is probably for only normal motorhome use for most people, lets say forty days away in the moho equates to 80 per year, I have a smarty card and get 100mb of data a month for only £10. So much cheaper then updating my satellite dish. And we have never yet run out of data.

Thanks Neil. :) As someone once told me, the Astra 2 signal area is like a pinhead, compared to the Astra 1 signal area.

That's what I thought. I'm not sure which LNB is for Astra 2 without testing it here in the UK first, by tuning in to Astra 2 and then blanking both off independently.

No Freesat, however FTA. I have noticed in the last few weeks since retuning and editing favourites, that I have lost a good few UK Radio Stations that I had lined up, ie, BBC R1, R2, Gold, Planet Rock, Absolute 70s, 80s, 90s, etc, whilst the TV channels lined up have all remained the same. :whatthe:

Cheers,

Jock. :)

But it’s not all about the cost. The info about 25gb fair use per month in the EU is very relevant to some, plus even in the UK getting a good enough mobile signal is sometimes an issue.

Being now a retired Commercial Satellite Engineer you should be aware some years ago Astra launched a new satellite at the 28.2 East orbit position for UK freest use. this satellite has a spot beam focus and is directed at the UK as its prime focus. The signal will drop the further south you travel into Europe. Southern Spain would require something in the order of 4 metre to pick up a very week signal. The Sky channels Sport,Movies and other channels actually broadcast on th old Astra 2 A,B,C, will still work all over Europe, as the beam from the satellite is a flood beam. How mush longer this will be the case depends on the life of the satellite and when Sky may move onto a new satellite for transmission.

Hope this explains the technical explanation.

Jock it could well be that some channels have changed frequency in which case a blind scan should find them

And there lies another problem Neil, ie, every time I scan, I lose my edited programme line up, which is so annoying. :(

Cheers,

Jock. :)

Actually I rescanned the other day and my favorites were kept - not sure if that’s because they were in the same place as before or not
BBC 1 HD seemed to have dropped off and could find it when scanning. Has it stopped being available on Astra? Normal BBC okay.

try this for size, works perfectly
about £600 I seem to remember, no card, no subscription, but don't park under trees

On our last Motorhome we had an 85cm Maxview Crank-up with twin LNB.

We used to take our Sky + box with us and got a perfect picture virtually everywhere we went.
I seemed to remember losing the UK channels around Turin but no problem as far as Salou. Unfortunately haven’t travelled any further into Spain than that atm so cannot comment further down.

No problem anywhere with the Sky Channels.

I changed the LNB £35 for our Sky Q box a few years ago but we no longer have that Motorhome.

For me, the big Maxview Crank-up would definitely be my choice. Very easy to use and never needs updates and at around £400. I could easily find the satellite within 15/20 seconds once you know where you’re looking for it.

Will definitely be getting one for this motorhome, just waiting for someone to be giving one away or the price to reduce 😂😂

They suddenly doubled in price a couple of years ago. I've had a Snipe 2 on the van for nearly 7 years it plays up occasionally and won't come down, then decides to work again. It's been OK since I took the connectors off and cleaned with contact cleaner, the control one had worked a bit loose so it could have been moisture on the contacts.
Did consider one for the new van if it ever comes but £1300 buys a lot of data.

I've a Snipe 3... nice unit, works well here and in the EU... never had any issues with it.... always use with clear(ish) line of sight... worked well in Kortrijk in the aire last year with trees and buildings around....
