Hi, I am looking at motorhomes and I found two that I like. They are both under 3500Kg, one has a Fiat Ducato 2.3l 130PS engine (2011), the other one has a Fiat Ducato 3.0l 177 PS (2014).

Has anybody got experience of real fuel consumption for the two? I expect the bigger one to be thirstier, but I have read comments to the contrary.

I often travel on motorways and less on "normal" roads. I cross the Alps a couple of times a year and I go through cities.

Also, are there differences in road tax for the two?

Any help will be much appreciated!

IMO (unless you re considering an RV)You should not worry too much about MPG on a motorhome.

Because the mileages tend to be relatively low (5-8000 miles pa is usual) the difference in annual cost between 20 and 25mpg is not that big. Depreciation and/or repairs/modifications tend to be the bigger expenses.

I would always go for the 3 litre its an all round better engine, now reserved for the Iveco's ( seen as a more premium chassis)

Don't have a problem on mine or the last too.
Don't understand why you bought a Hymer you dont appear to like anything about it.:D2
We have tried pretty much everything but so many people say how wonderful Hymers are we didn't think we could go wrong !
I am extremely fussy and I seriously don't understand how people put up with the quality as it really isn't there anymore.
As for the 2.3 litre 180 engine I don't like that either and the 3.0 litre was much better.
I actually now don't want to drive the motorhome.

Think you should sell up and buy a caravan, perhaps you will then make some useful comments on here.:D2:D2:D2

I've noticed.
On our 3rd Hymer not the best but a good mid range van & better than most of the rest. Perhaps you shold have bought a Morelo or Concorda, as for the engine you could have had a Merc based Hymer.

My dad has a 3.3t van with the Peugeot 2.0 engine and ~100bhp (only 5 gears). He quite happily thrashes it along the motorway at 80mph... but then only gets 26mpg.

I've got a van with similar dimensions and weight, but I've got a 10 year old Ducato 2.3 120bhp. Birmingham to Norfolk and back at the weekend I was very gentle and averaged 35mpg. I've driven the snow roads in the Cairgorms and around the Highlands. I'd like a bit more torque lower down the range, but there's normally enough power there if you are prepared to drop a cog.

A panel van and a fully loaded A class will drive completely differently.

Yeah, the aero is much worse on an A class, so at speed it'll make a difference. But on the hills, it's probably the weight that counts the most and 3.3t to 3.5t is pretty similar.

We very nearly bought a starline but as much as I loved the v6 engine apparently they are complete pigs on the road .
I am upset with the appliances in this van if I had spent twice the money on Morelo or Concorde to get the same crap I would want to kill people (y)

We run a Ducato 2012 3.0 180 (Iveco engine) with "comformatic" gearbox plated at 3850Kg, if we're cruising and in no rush at 50-60mph then she averages a solid 31mpg over a weeks touring incl. motorways, hills and towns.

If we peg it to speed limits on the motorways then this average will drop to around 28mpg, if I adopted a "floor it" driving style I'm sure it would drop to around 22mpg or less.

We are over the moon that we went for the 180 auto and haven't been able to fault it's performance so far.

Also, are there differences in road tax for the two?

No, road tax will be based on the plated weight and as they are both the same the road tax will be the same. You do have options to lower the cost of road tax but that's a whole other conversation...

Hope this helps
Cheers

you should have just bought a good condition used model for under 20 grand, there are out there. Our 2005 Concorde A class was £32000, Iveco 3 litre, fully loaded.
