Which country is on the edge of your comfort zone to visit in the motorhome?

France. They drive on the wrong side of the road and have weird rules on who has right of way.

I suppose one day I'll have to put on my big boy pants and get the van across that 21 miles of water.
If treated with respect, they're nice people, give it a go! 👍

Now to positives: I was lying in bed a couple of nights ago and thought of MH to Faroes and Iceland. I would be interested in how you have arranged it and costs. Maybe it is of little interest to many people so if you feel it is better please reply by PM.

Geoff
On our to-visit list so looked at ferry costs last year. Not cheap and you have to get to north Denmark first. Go in Feb/March or Oct/Nov not so bad, but we wan't to play golf there (highest density of golf courses per person globally. Go figure!) but grass doesn't grow/courses open until mid June, so it means peak season/prices. Budgeting at least €4k for the ferry roundup.

Georgia is a lovely country , the roads can be a bit precarious but otherwise its a nice place to visit. And it's Christian too so no calls to prayer etc. I'd return there to see more of it but it's a distance away and I found out last time getting back from Georgia to Turkey with 4 dogs isn't easy. But I'd recommend it.

Azerbaijan also appeals but border currently closed ( or was last year )

It's a shame Bulgaria and Romania have been lost to shengen as those are also two countries worth a visit

I think Serbia is the one I'm dubious about over in that direction .
We were in Bosnia late last year and people couldn’t have been more welcoming, very cheap we would return no worries.

Going to be touring Bulgaria for just over 2 weeks in May.
Been a couple of times before but did not see a lot as only there for a few days each time.
We have DiLs parents as tour guides who have promised a very interesting itin.
Sergie (DiLs father) was born and brought up in Plovdiv but now live in Sofia and Bansko, Bansko being a lovely place.

Met Queen Rania of Jordan on her last visit to Ireland in 2023 and I was telling her I would love to visit Jordan in my camper van and she said I have to come to see it all
You'll not get a better invite than that! 🤣
Just have to work out how to get there now without getting my head blown off! Lol

We went on an organised tour of Romania and Bulgaria last year. Romania was unbelievably beautiful and the people were very friendly. Bulgaria is huge and we found it less interesting and less pretty other than Plovdiv. We did cross into Serbia to visit Belgrade for 3 days. The borders are slow but no real problem. We were on a campsite just outside the city with an excellent bus service.

Loved Turkey and would go again. Also crossed to Cyprus.

We’re going to Iceland and the Faroe Islands this year. I think we will then have reached our limit in our van. Happy to do repeats. We will follow FCDO advice, Claire would kill us if we didn’t!

Other travels with be by air. Plenty of the world to see says she from the Panamanian rain forest.
Iceland is a wonderful country with great people, I travelled extensively through Iceland on horseback many moons ago👍

Its a real shame, very tolerant country with plenty to offer but surrounded by nutters.

Another vote for Morocco. I know parts of it well (Essaouira and Marrakech) from flying in. The obstacle to exploring by MoHo is working fulltime. I would need at least three weeks and better still four and, between work and singing commitments, I cannot see a window for doing that.
Morocco would be perfect in a 4 x4 Hymer or similar. I have driven a fair few dirt road there.

Speaking of dirt roads my first experience of those was in Turkey maybe 30 years ago. I wanted a two centre holiday - Fetiye and Datca but the tour company did not offer that two center option so I hired a car and drove between them. It looked simple enough on the map but I was taken by surprise to find myself on dirt roads much of the time!!

We are doing Iceland in 2026. About 6 weeks there to really see outside the ring road that most stick to. We've done the Golden Circle, so will give that a miss and see more obscure parts.

Lot of campsites close mid September. We have family that live in Akureyri and will visit them in October when the direct winter flight service is due to commence to finalise arrangements. There are passes available through them that gives us various benefits. They will join us in a tent as they have the summer off.

Studded tyres are compulsory from October to April in the North which dictates a lot of the schedule. The North has just experienced its worse winter for 20 years with avalanches and evacuations of villages along the NorthEast.

Lots of volcanic activity around Eyjafjallajökull with potential to adversely effect air travel as in 2010, currently. The blue lagoon has lava across the car park this year.

It's only since BiL & SiL have lived there that we've been interested in going.

Many years ago a friend did a kayak/microlight expedition across Iceland, this is his book:

Having the good fortune to have known Paul whilst paddling together, it was a pleasure to have finally obtained a copy of this book.
Will always remember travelling in his VW camper that was LHD, with the false steering wheel on the right that you took off and waved at children in cars in front. The looks of horror were priceless and a fantastic memory befitting his character.

The film of the book:

Did Iceland last year.
One of the best countrys we have been to. Loved it and looking forward to getting back there.

I've just heard there can be issues with the border etc and a bit of corruption but I've not been I'm just going on info I heard from folk I met in Greece a few years back.

I want to do more of Montenegro and see a bit more of Albania and I'd be curious about trying Serbia.. but time of year also important as last time I was that way Oct Nov and wet n cold
I've heard that Serbia is really beautiful. On returning from Greece last year we opted for the Albania route instead which was interesting. Would love to see more remote areas in Albania another time.

Liverpool

edit: better add a :)
The poster did say “country” , however we happily view Liverpool as separate Republic (Hence the LFC Kop flag Scouse not English) .

Purely for information purposes,
In 2022, Liverpool welcomed 31.5 million visitors, a 32% increase from 2021. The Liverpool City Region attracts around 60 million visitors each year.

So you won’t be breaking any new ground by coming to see us and you will be made very welcome…

My son is currently working in Serbia (Nis) and says the country is BEAUTIFUL but covered in rubbish. Apparently the air quality in towns is a long way short of any international agreements on pollution. Shame really as the cost of living is very low and the people area welcoming bunch.

60 million? That's more than the canary Islands. Can't be right or there would be folk out with banners saying no to tourists.

One thing’s for sure ,I will at no time be getting on a horse! Claire has just reminded me of a very embarrassing episode in Costa Rica on a family holiday when we were supposed to be going on a horseback ride. They all heard this hysterical screaming and looked round to see me jumping off and walking back to the ranch. Not my finest moment!

We’re going with GB motorhome tours , the same company that we visited Turkey&Cyprus in 23, and Bulgaria, Romania and Serbia in 24.

I know people go on about how much more cheaply we could do it on our own but it’s good fun and these are a bit outside our comfort zone on our own but now that we’ve done them they’re on the edge.

Some of the places we stayed in Turkey would not have been available to your ordinary folk either.

We do plenty on our own in your traditional European countries.
