Which club?

As a newbie, I was looking at various motorhome clubs.

OBVIOUSLY the first club I joined was this one and paid my £10 today.

Now there are many clubs around and the two that keep cropping up are "The Caravan Club" and "The Camping and Caravanning Club".

Is it worth joining one or other or both (or none). Is there a major difference between the two?

I am wondering as a motorhome owner which would be more beneficial to me?

Which club

We are in both and have been for 20 years. We don't always use club sites, but you know what standard you will get, the subs are not bad (around £40 pa) and the C and CC offer discounts for older members. The CC has, as you'd expect, more hard standings. :thumb:

Pros and cons to both. We have belonged to both for a number of years but we have not used a club site or Cl this year so we are cancelling both when up for renewal. Every time we have wanted to use a site they have been booked up. Some of the caravan club sites seem to get booked up for the whole year as soon as the bookings are opened.
They both offer good sites and a great selection of cl's.
I think if we were retired and could use sites during the week then we would probably benefit.
For us we don't want to plan trips weeks in advance to be sure of a pitch.
There will be others who will praise both clubs.

We are in both but use the Camping Club more, the motorhome and home are insured through them and we book the winter rally in Spain as well. We could do without the caravan club as we only use the odd site in the UK such as Folkstone before an early ferry.

We are members of both the only reason we are members of the Ccc is that we can get r.a.c breakdown for our size of van. We use the cc simply because of the high standards and facilities compared to the Ccc

Well, quite a few different views already. I'm getting the impression it may be down to personal preference and whether you are likely to use them or not.

I think perhaps we might join both and see what use we get out of them. If we use one more than the other or prefer one to the other we can then scrap one or keep them.

I was hoping there would be an obvious choice, but everyone seems to like one or the other for different reasons.

Are there any better or other recommended clubs or are these two the main players?

Have been in the Caravan and Camping Club for 24 years, very happy with sites, they have won loo of the years award many times, also get RAC cover cheaper as a member, have caravan insured with them, my MH is with another company , RAC will recover Motor homes others will not.

C&CC are known as the friendly one, and have found that that is correct, use to be in the Caravan Club, was not impressed, very regimental, after all you are on holiday, pays your money and take your choice.

Hi we are members of the CC no reason just picked that one and happy with it so far, don't use loads of their sites but do tend to use the CL sites. Also have booked the overnight ferry from Hull and Newcastle in the past three years with CC and the savings made will pay our membership for the next few years.

We have just joined the c&cc site at the nec show to give it a go for the year. We have been in the Caravan Club for a few years now but get increasingly annoyed at not being able to get on a site unless booked some time in advance. On the positive side their standards are generally good and pretty consistent.

Worth considering Brit Stops which is certainly good value for money.

Have a look at this other thread as well. The meets held by all the different sections of C&CC and their temporary holiday sites offers a lot more scope for places to go cheaply, you will not get hook up at them.

Personally, I did not realise the advantages of their motorhome section, and think we will be going for that very soon.

weve been members of both big clubs for years. the discount on insurance for being a member and rac cover pretty much cover the annual fees. then you also get members discount on some sites and exclusive access to others

caravan club is excellent for quality sites and network of small 5 van sites open to members

camping & caravan club is excellent for local district association meets, temporary holiday sites, motorcaravan section and various speciallity groups. they also have a network of sites but in general not as posh as the cc. again they have a substantial network of 5 van sites.

there are other clubs out there that cater for motorhomes, either by brand or other groupings. these can be an excellent way to tour the uk knowing the rallies tend to be held on motorhome friendly fields like rugby clubs

it all depends on how you plan to use your van. do you want a site with electric hook up, toilet block etc, or are you looking to find a quiet corner of a farmers field (5van site), or as with this club are you looking to attend rallies with many like minded friends?

for us, we like to mix all the above and travel with a minimum of planning. choose what we want to see or visit and find a site, rally, THS or 5 vans site that fits our needs. when we travelled with our daughter, c&cc rallies and THS sites were excellent as she got to meet other kids her age. these days we often ere towards club sites and 5 van sites for peace and quiet.

for the £80ish fees for both clubs, you can certainly get the benefit if you travel a lot.

oh nearly forgot both big clubs do escorted tours and rallies throughout europe and discounts on some ferries and tunnel are often offered:thumb:

I really like the sound of escorted tours. Especially if you are new and a bit nervous of touring a foreign country for the first time on your own. It would give a good introduction to european touring until you find your feet.

We joined both because we thought we'd be 'doing' a lot of UK before venturing into Europe (as above)
In reality we did a couple of sites in UK,neither of which were CC or CCC, and then after reading how easy it was in Europe on here,we just 'went for it' and havn't looked back since.
On the few occasions we've wanted a site in UK then ukcampsite finder has always come up with something.:thumb:

People talk about The Facilities' we have 'facilities' in the van-that's why we bought it and we've never wanted to join those 'diehards' seen trudging around a campsite in their dressing gowns in mid winter in pouring rain to enjoy the 'best facilities ever'
Look at how you intend to use your motorhome and base your decisions on that.

Though we are in both and like both, Carrerboy makes a very good point. Lots of CC members seem to ponce - sorry pounce! - on the booking service as soon as it opens for the season and block book months in advance. They often then do not turn up. The CC do not charge a deposit when booking a site, unlike he C and CC, and so there is little disincentive to stop this selfish behaviour. It'll be the tuggers, not us Motorhomers of course! But the website does let you check for late availability.

Worth a mention that the new price structure launched by C&CC makes a massive increase in fees a possibility. If like us you are over 60 and use a hardstanding( to save their grass) in their new " shoulder season" they really are taking the mick to try and suggest in their press release that they have reduced prices. They now seem to operate like my local council, who believe that the best way to cover any shortfall is just put a price up somewhere. It looks like no renewal for us.

If you enjoy lots and lots of rules join the C&CC.
If you really really like lots and lots of rules join the CC.
They are both businesses in spite of flying under the flag of members. the profits made seem to go to support the organisations and their well paid employees. They are primarily aimed at the Caravan users and suffer motorhomes rather than regard them as important customers.
By now you must realise we left them 10 or 15 years ago after being offered a price match on ferry prices after first trying to get £50 over the price I had been quoted by Dover Eurochange.

there are a number of reasons to join such clubs
campsites/cl/cs
rallies
Insurance/breakdown cover
ferry discounts.

Work out what you are likely to need/use and weigh up the options.
No one so far has mentioned the MCC motorcaravaners Club, smaller but worth a look.

for general information Fun covers it all, as well as rallies and occasionally escorted tours and has members throughout Europe ready to help first hand.
I am not a member of any of those mentioned as seldom use sites. so no use to me. ADAC covers my breakdown needs 365 days in the whole of Europe and any for vehical I travel in even as a passenger:thumb:.

We didn't join the C&CC simply because of its 11pm curfew. If we go out for a meal, or a drink, we don't want to arrive back to a barrier at 11:10. No problem for caravaners they just leave the car outside the barrier and walk in.
