Which bbq

A few negative comments about the Cadac here. Ours (Carri Chef 2) is not christened yet (won’t be long tho!) but am becoming a bit concerned we may be disappointed with it. Are the issues to do with usability, reliability or both?
We’ve used Cadac’s for years with no bother. Think they’re excellent.

Similarly, charcoal is always the preference for us but needs must ……

We have a Kamado under cover in the backyard and use it year round and almost 100% when at home during the allegedly ‘warmer’ months. When outdoors/camping the Cobb is the weapon of choice - very versatile and initially expensive but we’ve had it for years and have certainly had our money’s worth out of it - and nothing comes near it for a piri piri chicken, Picanha beef, or smallish leg of lamb on the go.

Recognising the limitations imposed on naked flame cooking in certain places, I bought a Napoleon TravelQ 285X with griddle plate and smoker tube, which has been in use on a standalone propane bottle. It’s a relatively large unit but again, we intend to keep on cooking outdoors as much as possible - both BBQ and a la plancha. I wanted to ensure the BBQ and MoHo gas supply (when it eventually arrives!) were compatible, so I had a good look around a dealer demo model shortly after ordering while sizing up for the Alugas installation and saw that the Truma regulator is rated at 30mbar. Luckily Napoleon have units for the GB market rated for both 30mbar and 37mb (see data plate below) so I went for the former and changed the regulator on the bottle to suit.

What's your fuel of choice with the Cobb?
As a rule is it true that most sites that prohibit the use of coal BBQ's generally allow the use of gas BBQ's external to the MH?

Yes. I've never been on a site that didn't allow gas BBQs. However, most of the sites I've gone to in summer, say no wood or charcoal cooking.

I’ve tried their ‘Cobblestones’ and the ‘Ultra Quick BBQ’ copies made from coconut shell, and although good, work out as very expensive. My preference is for Weber BBQ Briquettes which are good value in the 8kg bag and burn well - 8-11 briquettes on an odour free firefighter is good for 1-1.5 hours, certainly enough for a leg of lamb. I’ve never had an issue with using a gas BBQ anywhere, and even the enclosed Cobb as it doesn’t attract the same attention as grilling over an open flame. These bad boys might be chancing it though!

BioLite with single chicken looking a bit lonely!

We use the Aussie heat beads mostly. They do a great job, last a long time, and are good value for money. Cobblestones do a good job to but, are not re-usable, and are now getting quite expensive.

I have stated on this forum before that I consider the Cadac to be a very dangerous piece of equipment. Ours caught alight, the legs collapsed and gas ignited from the hose and nearly burnt the motorhome. A search of reviews of Cadacs revealed others had had a similar problem but Cadac refused to enter into correspondence with anyone who complained.
My Cadac Safari Chef 2 also caught fire and collapsed, whilst connected to MOHO. I would also not recommend and if you do have one stay near the gas valve so you can shut it off quickly.

I use a Cadac safari but have the one that uses independent small camping gas canisters that you can buy from camping stores . It works very well and strikes me as a simpler and more flexible solution than connecting it to the van gas.

Have I missed something. I see Robert Clark appears as a deleted user on this thread. Where has he gone? Loved reading his blogs also very knowledgeable.

Sadly he asked Jim to delete himself from the forum, I don't know why, but I miss his posts as well, especially the guess the price of dinner challenge, but also all the other useful stuff he posted.

Re the cadac safety, it's a gas appliance - it needs to be checked regularly AND cleaned regularly. I love the cadac but have also had a problem in that the gas valve fell apart. I had it replaced under guarantee and now check it before use.

My Cadac was less than six months old and I was using it for only the third time when it collapsed and ignited. I contacted Cadac and received no reply which, according to some reviews I read online, was their standard way of handling such complaints. I would have pursued it further but I was just about to ship the motorhome to NZ and had other things to sort out. I now take every opportunity to spread the word that they are dangerous, in my opinion.
